GingerrrFox Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 The more I look at our squad the more I think the 3-5-2 formation is perfect for us. Knockaert, Marshall and Gallagher are all played as wingers in a 4-4-2 but for me all 3 work best in a free role as an attacking midfielder behind the front two. De Laet and Schlupp are both very good attacking full backs and the presence of another centre back allows them to bomb on and run at the opposition, scare them and create chances, that is when we look most dangerous. 3 centre backs give us options to play from the back rather than HOOF it long and we can keep the midfield 2 behind the free role to give us stability and help create.
Fox92 Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Knockaert needs to be in a free role, I agree. Nugent needs to be in a central position as well.
KFS Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Kasper Wes St Ledger Whitbread Schlupp DD King Knocky De Laet Wood Nugent Provides width, Knocky in a free role. You could do a lot with that to be fair.
marbelladave Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 NFP has no idea of how to play anything other than 4-4-2. the last few games should have taught you that.....
LCFC FOX Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Kasper De Laet (if fit) Morgan Keane Koncheskey Wellens King Schlupp Knockaert Dyer Wood
acooling08 Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 NFP has no idea of how to play anything other than 4-4-2. the last few games should have taught you that..... Yeah, playing 4-3-3 yesterday really backs that argument up.
marbelladave Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Yeah, playing 4-3-3 yesterday really backs that argument up.
GingerrrFox Posted 17 March 2013 Author Posted 17 March 2013 We have strength in depth at centre back (Morgan, Keane, SSL) and we have strength in depth at creative midfielders that like to be able to roam about the pitch (Knockaert, Marshall, Gallagher). The formation is fluid in that you can switch from a 3-5-2 in attack to a 5-3-2 in defence. Also if your playing a team who are superior (in the Premiership fingers crossed) you can replace the free role midfielder to another central midfielder to shore up the midfield. It's perfect really.
Guest Col city fan Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 I don't think we have the players to play anything other than a 4-4-2 effectively. That's why I've banged on about a lack of real quality. My formation would be 4-1-2-2-1 With the two wider men attacking. But we don't have a natural defensive midfielder to sit just off the back four. Except James and he's often out injured. Pearson has bought a squad that can only really play ok in a 4-4-2 IMO.
stillwater Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Kasper Wes St Ledger Whitbread Schlupp DD King Knocky De Laet Wood Nugent Provides width, Knocky in a free role. His negative approach over the last few games has destroyed all the confidence the team had.
cc_star Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Have to laugh at SSL & Whitbread in the team We only have the skillset to play 442 We only have the players to play 433 (as we have quite a few forwards but not so many midfielders) and we don't play it very well. I'd love to see us practising 4231 better. Not ideal with 102 forwards in the squad, only able to keep 1 happy, but so what... it's both very attacking whilst providing ample defensive cover. Schmeichel RDL - Morgan - Keane - Schlupp King - Drinkwater Marshall - Knockaert - Dyer Nugent With attacking fullbacks and the team playing a high line, pressing in the opposition half, there would be great support for Nugent but the formation is flexible enough for all sorts of problems to be caused whilst having the numbers in midfield to combat spoiling sides. Failing that I'd go 4411 Schmeichel RDL - Morgan - Keane - SchluppMarshall - King - Drinkwater - DyerKnockaert/GallagherNugent Nugent is best with balls to run on to, Knocky or Gallagher would be dinking thru-balls for him, whilst being on the edge of the box themselves... they can also drop back slightly when we need the extra body to prevent the midfield duo being over-ran. It's not just about formation though, it's about workrate, playing football in opposing half and certainly never, ever, not in a million years hoofing it.
marbelladave Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Have to laugh at SSL & Whitbread in the team We only have the skillset to play 442 We only.......... Right there and absolutely on the money...... Strange way to spell manager though.......
Tielemans63 Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Didn't we play 3-5-2 once last year, away at Palace I think it was, and we actually played really well? We're far too predictable right now so why not?

We're far too predictable right now so why not? Yes we did. It was right in the middle of a shit run of form and he completely changed personel and system. Liam Moore made his debut at right back with Tom Kennedy on the other side. Tunch, Bamba and Mills were the 3 centre backs I think??
Blue will Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 Knocky needs a free role just like when he broke into the team! Get him on the ball as much as possible

fleckneymike Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 AND Juventus have stormed Serie A with a 3-5-2. Yeah but who plays it anymore hey?
GingerrrFox Posted 17 March 2013 Author Posted 17 March 2013 If you take the obvious ability difference out of the equation Manchester City's squad and ours are very similar. Centre backs that are good on the ball - Nastasic, Kompany and Zabaleta (Morgan, Keane and St Ledger), attacking full backs in which defending isn't their strongpoint - Maicon, Kolarov and Glichy (De Laet and Schlupp), central midfielders that are good at keeping possession but not really attacking minded - Barry and Garcia (James, Drinkwater, Wellens), Free role attacking players that don't have the out and out pace to play on the wing - Silva and Nasri (Knockaert, Marshall and Gallagher) and a collection of strikers that vary in target man and poacher role - Dzeko, Aguero and Tevez (Wood, Nugent, Kane and Waghorn).
l444ry Posted 17 March 2013 Posted 17 March 2013 AND Juventus have stormed Serie A with a 3-5-2. More teams play three at the back in Serie A than any other system. If Prandelli would stop persisting with his preferred three up front the Azzurri would probably be better for it.

Yeah 3-5-2 and the slight differences 3-4-2-1/3-4-1-2-/3-2-3-2 etc are their bread and butter like the English 4-4-2 spin offs. The reason Hull have done so well this season with the 3-5-2 is that the majority of teams in this league and in English football play 4-4-2 which is what the formation is designed to beat.

Like it or not, the modern game demands three in the middle now. Unless you have players of the quality of Manchester Utd and the like, playing 4-4-2 is virtually signing your death warrant.
