Do they not know that Muslims can be white, too? In fact, they can look like anyone - you could walk past loads of different people on the street and they could be Muslim - you aren't to know. I see what you're getting at but I don't think there's anything definitively wrong with this phrase when you don't know the context it was used in. The perpetrators could've been wearing Muslim clothing, for all we know. Regardless of their colour you could then say that they are 'of Muslim appearance.' It's not always a racist assumption, you're making a sweeping statement there. People get far too offended and take the moral high ground instantly when phrases like this get bandied around.

What they chanted or shouted doesn't relate to how they 'appear'. The definition of "to appear" is not the same as the definition of "has the appearance of". I see nothing in the dictionary which disallows audio from contributing towards ones appearance. Also, it doesn't matter if not all Muslims wear certain clothes. If these two were wearing Muslim clothes then that fully explains and justifies describing them as having a Muslim appearance.
