The Pre-Season Training Thread 2013/14

Merc - Wednesday 26th

The Leicester City squad returned to the club's Belvoir Drive training ground yesterday for fitness testing.

Manager Nigel Pearson and his staff put the players through their paces after their shorter-than-normal summer break to assess their condition ahead of the official start of preseason on Monday.

As well as running tests, the players' physical condition was assessed to ensure there had been no summer excesses.

Kasper Schmeichel and Sean St Ledger weren't there as they have been given more time off after their international exploits during the summer.

Jermaine Beckford was also absent as he is in talks with Bolton Wanderers over a transfer to the Reebok Stadium.

Some reports yesterday indicated the Trotters and Beckford were miles apart in their negotiations on personal terms, as the striker will have to accept a substantial pay cut.

The Mercury understands, however, that both parties are confident of reaching an agreement and the deal could be concluded by the weekend.

Other players who have been told they can join other clubs if the right offers come in, such as Paul Gallagher, Richie Wellens and Neil Danns, joined the rest of the squad for the fitness assessment.

The hard work has already begun for Leicester City's players.

After reporting back for pre-season testing, they are determined to make up for last term's Championship play-off heartbreak.

Andy King said Leicester City's players have been doing fitness work during the summer

The players have been put through their paces at the club's Belvoir Drive training headquarters – and they proved they were already in great shape.

The official start of pre-season training is on Monday. But manager Nigel Pearson must have been delighted to see them come through the testing procedures so well.

Andy King said the players had been maintaining their fitness throughout the summer break and are determined to improve on their top-six finish of last season.

"It was tough but nice to get back in and see everyone again, and to get back into the routine," he said.

"Everyone did well. There were a lot of people who had been doing some work over the summer and it was just good to see everyone.

"Hopefully, all the hard work, which has started and will continue over the summer as well, will be rewarded with promotion at the end of the season."

Striker David Nugent said all the City players were excited to be back together and determined to get down to the more enjoyable ball work as quickly as possible.

"It has been eventful, a nice little test run," he said after his testing.

"Everyone was very enthusiastic to be back. All the lads have been keeping fit over the summer and everyone has passed the test, so hopefully we can come back next week and get the balls out and start earlier than usual."

Captain Wes Morgan said all the hard work they would be putting in would stand them in good stead when the action kicks off at Middlesbrough, on August 3.

"It is never good coming back for the first day of pre-season because it is hard, but it turned out all right and all the boys are flying," he said.

"It is all about getting us ready for the long season ahead and getting into match-fitness mode.

"It is a long season and there are plenty of games so you have to ensure your body is right so we can cope with the demands of the long season ahead."

City's Capital One Cup first-round tie with Wycombe is to be played on Tuesday, August 6 (7.45 kick-off).

Nigel Pearson's men will make the trip to Adams Park just three days after the opening Championship game away at Middlesbrough.

Following their clash with The Chairboys, City will then host Leeds in the first home game of the season on Sunday, August 11.

Maybe worthy of its own thread, but:

@JasonBourne1986: I've spoken to Doncaster Rovers - as far as they're aware, Danny Drinkwater is NOT training with the club. #LCFC

What do they mean 'as far as they're aware'? That's more or less saying 'no, I don't think Danny Drinkwater's training with us, can't be sure though...'

Preparations for the new Championship season began in earnest this week as the Leicester City squad returned from their summer break to face a rigorous programme of pre-season testing.

With another promotion push on the cards, the players were put through their paces at the Club’s Belvoir Drive training facility by Nigel Pearson and his coaches in a gruelling series of fitness tests ahead of the new season.

And the results proved that the squad are as determined as ever to put the disappointment of last season behind them as they passed with flying colours.

"All the lads are flying,” skipper Wes Morgan told Foxes Player after coming off the training pitch.

“It’s all about preparing for the season ahead and all the work is to get us in match fitness mode. It’s a long season with plenty of games so you’ve got to make sure your body is right to be able to cope with the long season ahead.”

Last term’s top scorer David Nugent echoed his captain’s comments, adding: “It’s been an eventful day, it was a nice little test run and everyone was enthusiastic.

“All the lads have been keeping fit over the summer as it showed as we’ve all come in and passed the test so hopefully this time next week we can get the balls out and start earlier than usual.”

City’s 2013/14 Championship campaign kicks off on August 3 away to Middlesbrough, but before then an extensive programme of pre-season fixtures and training sessions will have to be negotiated to ensure the players have the right base fitness levels to take them through to next May.

With the growing list of sports science equipment that is being used to monitor fitness, there is no hiding place for players in pre-season, but City’s hard-working Welsh international midfielder Andy King is enjoying being back.

“It was nice, the running was tough but it was good to see everyone again, get started and get back into the routine,” he said.

“Everyone did well. There were a lot of people who had been doing stuff over the summer which is good to see.

“Hopefully all the hard work which has started now, will get us that reward of promotion by the end of the season.”

The Leicester City squad made their return to pre-season training on Monday morning as they began their preparations for the 2013/14 Football League Championship season.

All were present and correct for the morning’s first session with the exceptions of Kasper Schmeichel, Sean St Ledger and Jermaine Beckford, who have been granted extended breaks after representing their respective nations during the summer.

A daunting day of fitness tests and running awaits the squad as they put in the hard yards that they hope will eventually brings them success on the pitch in the coming campaign.

Under the close supervision of Manager Nigel Pearson, his coaches, physios and sports science staff, the players will be put through an intense double training session to make sure they are on the road to peak fitness come the opening fixture away at Middlesbrough on 3 August.
