MC Prussian Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 How much "match practice" have we got out of this? Our players have just spent 90 minutes tearing around in the sun chasing shadows. How often is that going to happen this season? It's not remotely representative of how a real match would be. They'd get more "match practice" from an 11 on 11 game in training. I think you just answered your own question there.
HoustonFox Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Well that was pointless. What were you expecting from pre-season? Same as watching England friendlies too. Just a practice match. Also it added some good $$$ to our account (I hope) from gate receipts and TV
Happy Fox Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 I wouldn't mind some of these Monaco Reserves here! very decent.
Guest ttfn Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Well their attitude is even worse than ours......yet they prove time and time again that a poor pre-season can bring success. What "attitude'?! Who is talking about "attitude" apart from me saying that the attitude of the fans (not the club, the fans) is blase. Rest assured, United aren't blase about pre-season friendlies, they never have been and never will be. And you're confusing cause and coincidence. Having a poor pre-season doesn't bring success. It might suggest that there is no link between performances in pre-season and during the season, but with 3 goals in 4 games, there are legitimate concerns over whether either our new system or the pre-existing 4-4-1-1 is providing enough opportunities for us to score. From a purely tactical perspective, this would appear to be self-evident. I think you just answered your own question there. You've just described it as "valuable match practice"!!!
cc_star Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 I wouldn't mind some of these Monaco Reserves here! very decent. Hopefully their billionaire owner buys us out then, and sells us about 10 of them for free on some convoluted deal designed to avoid paying fair market prices and keeping below FFP
Guest shearfox Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Friendlies are there to just try out different tactics, they mean jack when the season actually starts... The players won't be putting in 100% to ensure they don't pick up a needless injury...
Father Ted Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Worrying performance. We have players there who are fighting for places who showed no desire or urge to make anything happen. Positives: Matty James led like a true captain again first half and was making things happen, we look ten times better with him in the side. De Laet looked impressive at RWB. Ben Marshall impressed me greatly in a centre midfield role in the second half, showed some excellent energy levels, set pieces much improved (shame nobody was attacking them) and defensive work was solid. Negatives: Schmeichel's distribution was very poor. Konchesky looked woeful again. Drinkwater remains slow, dithers too much and slows the game down. Danns is not our saviour! Gallagher got on the pitch.

That is a genius idea, gets around the FFP It sounds familiar.

Should have played someone like when we played O'Neill's Sunderland... Very good workout & representative of games we'll play in OK, real Madrid was great, Barca would be too but no point playing anyone else as there was hardly anyone there so rather than thinking of self promotion, think of team preparation. That is a genius idea, gets around the FFP watford showing everyone how its done
Kitchandro Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Pointless exercise. We may as well have got them to run around the training pitch for 90 minutes. We didn't even get to laugh at our hideous away kit. We looked like we couldn't be arsed in the second half. We've not had any practice with the ball and our defending was lazy at best. I hope it was just pre-season laziness. I'm a bit concerned that Pearson played Knockers on the right and Marshall in the centre. They were both lost because they should have swapped positions. Where you watching Kingfox? Knockaert was coming inside everytime he got the ball and Marshall was garbage, he didn't have the qualities to play in the centre. It's claer Knockers should have a free role or be behind the strikers in the middle. Pearson needs to see this or he won't get the best out of him. Agreed. We learnt nothing from this and the players didn't gain anything from it.
Father Ted Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Agree it a bit harsh on Danns. Not sure what he did wrong? Gally on pitch so we can sell I hope. Danns has always been a hit and miss player for me. What we gain in energy and those late runs in to the box is a carelessness in possession in dangerous areas. I'd certainly think James and King are way ahead of him in the pecking order.

Gallagher got on the pitch. Agree with some of this although I've no idea what you saw in Marshall. He was pants and cannot play in the middle. It's right wing or nothing for him, and he doesn't deserve to be in the starting 11. Schmeichel was our best passer on the pitch. He should have been playing in midfield.

Well said there. Classic Danns is picking it up from deep and either trying to pass or run with it and giving it away very easily. It was a typical Danns performance today, dreadlocks swaying from side to side, the occassional promising moment but on the ball generally poor.

Marshall looked head and shoulders above Danns in the middle and was the only one on the pitch really showing any desire. He was the only one who was looking to win the ball back and distribute it. A couple of important defensive interceptions. I think Marshall would highly complement King and James in any kind of 5 man midfield. As was seen away at Blackpool last season, that 3 man combo worked very well, Marshall works very hard in pressing the opposition high up as well as his quality on the ball. I'd love to see us play a 4-5-1/4-2-3-1/4-3-3, what ever you would like to call it with Marshall playing further advanced than James and King with Wood a lone striker.

scotty1980 Posted 27 July 2013 Posted 27 July 2013 Was you actually at the game or you just making it up as you go??? The only attacking player in the second half, let me guess you think knocky should of started? A player who had the same amount of time as marshall and wh was absolutely gash for 45 mins, when you actually learn the game of football please feel free to reply!

You need some work at this quoting lark. Marshall played like a pussy as usual for me. Pathetic tackling, ran into trouble, set pieces were shit. He played in an attacking position but he didn't offer any threat. It's not his position. Schlupp was the major attacking threat in the second half with about 2 break aways down the left. It's pointless judging Knocky out on the right wing against opposition like that. He was always trying to come inside because that's where he wants to be. Like I said, if Pearson keeps playing him out there he'll be wasted and people will become increasingly frustrated with him. And 'was you'? 'should of'? 'wh'? When you actually learn the language of English please feel free to reply!

When you quote me, can you at least quote me correctly?
Guest ttfn Posted 28 July 2013 Posted 28 July 2013 Tisserand makes it 3-0 for Monaco. Game over, match practice gained. Sorry I embellished on the word "valuable".

Not sure how you've come to the conclusion he's going to be wasted out there after his performances last season.
