I rate De Laet, but you need someone similar on the left. Also, who would play the deeper defensive midfielder role (sorry Drinkwater not good enough).

Bayfox Posted 30 July 2013 Posted 30 July 2013 352 to play this formation would be mad. it only suits delaet. we are a centre half short to play this unless we are moving konch or playing taft. that means schlupp at lwb. and it really needs to be 3412 so we can play knocky or marshall behind the strikers with king and james in the middle. king james and drinky is garbage.

The biggest thing that strikes me if we choose to play this formation is lack of depth in the squad if injury/suspension should occur. Our defence would consist of RWB. De Laet CB. St Ledger CB. Morgan CB. Whitbread LWB. Konchesky I'm not too convinced by this defence in all honesty, add that to the fact that we only have 2 other defenders in the squad (Moore & Bagayoko) and it is even more of a concern Our midfield would presumably be CM. James CM. King CM. Drinkwater All 3 players are too similar for my liking, and if Pearson continues to ignore Danns again this season we have no one in the squad capable of playing centre mid. Not unless he is thinking of using Knockaert or Marshall there. Strikers ST. Nugent ST. Wood I think we're okay for strikers, these 2 are more than capable of being one of, if not the top strikeforce in the league. Waghorn, Vardy and Schlupp are also capable of doing a job if called upon. A 3-5-2 formation, as much as I like the idea, will not work with the players we currently have. I also can't see where Knockaert, Marshall or Dyer are going to fit in? These 3 are all match winners and could be big players for us this season. I'd love for us to try a Man Utd-esque 4-4-1-1 looking something like this GK. Kasper RB. De Laet CB. Morgan CB. Whitbread LB. Bagayoko RM. Marshall CM. King CM. James LM. Dyer CF. Knockaert ST. Wood/Nugent Think this would work well with our current squad, and would help get the most out of our more attacking players - something which Pearson just eluded to in his post match interview.

We can't afford to run the risk of playing an unorthadox formation in games that matter the most especially when it didn't work so well in the pre-season friendlies. We would get trounced by any team in the league by playing 3-5-2.

Was just coming on here to post the exact same thing. RDL looks very strong in that role but I haven't seen what kind of player Bakayogo is yet so don't know if he can do the same down the left. Either way I don't think we have enough quality centre backs (Wes excluded) to play 3-5-2. I think it would cause mayhem at the back and as you say we don't have a particularly good holding midfielder unless Drinkwater steps up. Either way I feel a bit sorry for Prarson now because he'll get slated whether we play 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 now. Maybe he'll use the 3-5-2 more at home. I would mind seeing us play a 4-2-3-1 with Knocky, King and Nuge playing behind Wood

We have better players than most teams in the division, draw you own conclusions. The one i've come to his that Pearson is clutching at straws and as no idea what to do.

I would agree with you if I had any confidence that we would be able to coach the side in that setup. Sadly I do not think we can do that, after all we have been playing 4 at the back for years under NFP and we are still complete bobbins whenever the opposition get the ball into our box.

Ric Flair Posted 31 July 2013 Posted 31 July 2013 Konchesky at LWB is just a waste of a position. It's an extra defender that offers nothing going forward but will get caught out of position if he tries, on the counter attack. 352 can on one hand be a very attacking formation, but on the other a very defensive formation. The trouble we seem to have with it is that it's not very attacking and players are struggling with the shape and being torn wide open. Leading to a lack of goals scored and a decent amount being shipped. The hallmarks of a dog muck points to games ratio. Early days though.
