Trav Le Bleu Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 In terms of manners, it's often the older generation who lack them as much as the "naughty" youth of today. You can give up a seat on public transport, or hold a door open for the elderly, and you are lucky if you get a thankyou. Manners cost nothing. Mostly seems to be women too. I agree, maybe not so bad as young people but certainly increasing. There are many people who seem to consider that because they're old they somehow automatically deserve to have people do stuff for them, with thanks or not. Also, despite sexual equality, you NEVER see women holding doors open for men!
Mack Posted 1 October 2013 Author Posted 1 October 2013 Really sounds to me like you are part of the problem. You see someone doing something that annoys you, for no real reason, so you go out of your way to make their life more difficult, that is pretty much what this thread is about, selfish people, making other people's lives more difficult. In a few thousand years sociologists will most likely point to a myriad of factors that led to the fall of Western Civilisation, one of them being social media, you remember when people used to say, "You wouldn't say that to him in real life!", not heard that for a while, probably because nowadays people will just call someone a cvnt in real life, as methods of socially interacting on the internet seeps into the real world. It is also a cultural thing and certainly has more to do with deifying the likes of Simon Cowell, and his "hilarious" put downs of the mentally ill, than any political leanings, mainly because nobody gives a shit about politics any more. It is also born out of frustration that the country seems to be going to the dogs and there is fvck all you can do about it as democracy is a fallacy and any sensible commentary is drowned out by morons screaming hyperbole, so people think fvck it why should give a shit about anyone else, nobody gives a shit about me. I wrote the first message in this thread and in no way does this statement reflect what I said.

Captain... Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 I wrote the first message in this thread and in no way does this statement reflect what I said. So this thread is not about selfish/rude/antisocial behaviour, and the changing attitudes which has led to them being more numerous now than before? My mistake I thought your long list of people displaying selfish/rude/antisocial behaviour was what you were complaining about, if you had another point to make you probably shouldn't have spent 10 minutes writing a long list of selfish/rude/antisocial behaviour, because deliberately slowing your vehicle so people crossing the road walk into certainly fits into that category.

I did not post this and it has nothing to do with me. I think you need to read the thread more closely, as all I did was explain my experiences today and ask if other people had also noticed a general decline in basic manners and consideration for others in general lately.

Saxondale Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 I think every generation has had its gits. I reckon the main negative characteristic of the current zeitgeist is the overwhelming sense of entitlement and misguided aspiration. It's not to say that these are entirely negative traits, but they do seem to lead to inevitable selfishness and a feeling of 'dog-eat-dog'. Anybody who hasn't watched the below in its entirety probably should. I think it explains a lot about people today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D12FGiGegfc
Danno Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 Some things that have pissed me off today is I went out my way to hold the door open for some woman with loads of shopping bags and didn't get any sort of acknowledgement at all. Another is people who just walk straight past the big issue sellers like they aren't even there, a 'no thank you' isn't difficult.!
BoneDog Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 Anybody who hasn't watched the below in its entirety probably should. I think it explains a lot about people today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D12FGiGegfc I've not seen that yet, but am reading a book at the moment called Amusing Ourselves to Death which that video looks to be along the same lines as. Decent book, probably more relevant nowadays than when it was written in '85.
Alf Bentley Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 I have to say I can't stand the big issue sellers. I can understand not liking 1 or 2 individual sellers (there's 1 local to me that I'm not keen on), but not being able to stand them all en masse?! Why is that?
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 *Loves got the World in motion...* It God damn giggidy giggidy has!
Mike Oxlong Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 I can understand not liking 1 or 2 individual sellers (there's 1 local to me that I'm not keen on), but not being able to stand them all en masse?! Why is that? I think it's because he has a big issue with them.
ADK Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 I can understand not liking 1 or 2 individual sellers (there's 1 local to me that I'm not keen on), but not being able to stand them all en masse?! Why is that? I don't like people trying to sell me things. Some are worse than others. Standing in a choke point so you have to pass close to them or approaching you I really don't like. If they are standing in a prominent place and not interfering with people then fine, anyone can choose to buy their magazine if they want to.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 Big Issue twice as dear as tissue and half the value
Guest MattP Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 Never got why they just didn't flood the Big Issue with tits, would have made the tramps a fortune selling it had they attacked the Nuts/Zoo market.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 They'd never have sold Wouldn't have been able to turn over 1st page
Rincewind Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 This may surprise you. I bought one once. Mainly to see how they put across the stories. Over 2 quid and too commercial for me. Some well known name writing in as guest and adverts which were not much to do with homelessness. But there is a market for it and the organisation produce it for a a wide readership and profit. The one we do is free and we look at the human side of the stories as well as offering advice and hope. Room for both out there.
Guest MattP Posted 1 October 2013 Posted 1 October 2013 Pitch it to Down and Out next time you are in. Booze tits and footy mag, I could be the man to save the homeless.
Haydos Posted 2 October 2013 Posted 2 October 2013 How about location? I've not been back down south/Leicester for a prolonged period for a while but I find most people up here in Sheffield/Yorkshire in general to be very polite and friendly. Example: I pop across the road to Aldi to get my lunch a fair bit. Nearly every time someone in front of me in the queue with a trolley gets my attention and offers me their place in the queue as I've only got a couple of things. People still annoy me but I still enjoy being nice to people because I find most up here reciprocate.
Mack Posted 2 October 2013 Author Posted 2 October 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D12FGiGegfc **** me that was depressing.
Guesty Posted 2 October 2013 Posted 2 October 2013 Leicester bus driver who ignores the red light, lollipop lady and kids on a school crossing and flies straight through it. Hopefully they'll find out who it was and sack them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APNTRXV_Eyo
