Bert Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 Legend is over used these days, but not in this case. Just rode his 4000th winner. What a phenomenal achievement that is, from one of the most humble and hard working blokes there is in sport. Hopefully he goes on to break Lester Piggots record now. An inspiration to many! Well done AP.
ScouseFox Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 From the betting thread AP's whole career and persona and everything summed up in 30 seconds. No way he was even going to place at the 3rd last when he was outpaced and McCoy wouldn't let him give up and he somehow managed to win. Amazing. Sensational achievement. Great man, great sportsman. Not many better sportsman/athletes in my lifetime. Edit - His 4000th winner touched a shade over 50/1 in play as they turned for home. Nobody else would've won on that horse from that position. Vintage AP.
Guest MattP Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 Incredible bloke and jockey. Fantastic record.
Tom17LCFC Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 Just ridiculous. Only he could have won from that position. Unbelievable achievement, really is a legend!
ScouseFox Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 He rode his first winner (albeit on the flat) 2 years and 2 months before I was even born. Shitttt. He's broken pretty much every bone in his body too, lunatic.
Simmo86 Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 Why the fudge has he got a Leicester shirt on? Congrats btw. Ledge
ScouseFox Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 Why the fudge has he got a Leicester shirt on? Congrats btw. Ledge He's sound with Conrad. And Conrad was there today and gave it to him.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 7 November 2013 Posted 7 November 2013 I'd like to congratulate the horses. Surely they deserve more credit?
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 Is it me or does he look like that guy from having and Stacey is it?
Jordan Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 jockeys arent athletesThey aren't--but are they not "sportsmen?"
Kitchandro Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 Fvcking hell that's superb! Conrad finally has a use! Seriously though, what a legend (McCoy, not Conrad). I was so pleased when he won Sports Personality, cos he's one of the few who is actually worthy of the achievement. He is THE sports personality. A great talent and fulfilled because of a great attitude.
Guest MattP Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 jockeys arent athletes Among the fittest sportsman going with Cyclists and Tennis players.
James. Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 Whenever I hear / read stuff about this it makes me wonder just how deranged he must be to have achieved this. Surely there must be something slightly unhinged about someone who's willing to put themself through what he has. Hard to think of any comparisons really... in terms of the sacrifices, the pain, the broken bones, the longevity, etc
Finnegan Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 Sorry but anyone that thinks being a jockey is a piece of cake needs to read up on his lifestyle, training routines, race day procedures, diet, everything. James is right, 100% maniac.

Hard to think of any comparisons really... in terms of the sacrifices, the pain, the broken bones, the longevity, etc Strange thing is for 90% of them the money isn't even that good. Riders fees for even jockeys like David Casey and Tom Scudamore are only £40 a race and they are a level just below McCoy. McCoy generally loves what he does though, similar to boxers in mindset, the broken bones and diet restrictions are just part of the sacrifice for the buzz of winning a Gold Cup or a King George.

Yeah the pay is abysmal really when you compare to the top level in pretty much every other sport. Why is that? Boxing sprung to mind when I wrote that post but even then the money is generally a shitload more and (particularly in the case of Ricky Hatton) you also get a chance to blow off steam after a fight given the time between them. Jockeys like MccCoy don't get anywhere near that sort of respite, he's racing pretty much every day. Mental.
Bert Posted 8 November 2013 Author Posted 8 November 2013 Would anyone else stand in a chamber at -125 degrees so they could come back from injury quicker? No chance. What the bloke puts himself through to be successful is ridiculous.

Jockeys like MccCoy don't get anywhere near that sort of respite, he's racing pretty much every day. Mental. If you make it big in boxing the wealth is incredible but It's still shit to be honest for 95%, I was having a couple of beers with Hvorje Kisicek in Whitwick a few weeks back and he gets £250 a fight to get beat up by prospects. He's been given a call this week to fight Anthony Joshua, he'll get a grand for that as it's on Sky next Thursday but he'll probably end up out and have to spend a night in hospital under observation to go with it. As Bert says above, McCoy will go to incredible lengths to take a ride, what I love about him is he gives his all whether it's Chepstow in November or Cheltenham in March, it was so apt that his winner yesterday was one only he could have got up.
Simmo86 Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 He's sound with Conrad. And Conrad was there today and gave it to him. Hahahaha fair play Conrad
separator Posted 8 November 2013 Posted 8 November 2013 AP had his highest win/ride ratio at Leicester racecourse according to the Merc. http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/McCoy-s-racecourse/story-20051677-detail/story.html Would be a deserving SPOTY winner, even though Murray will win it and AP won it in 2010.
