ImBlue Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Don't make this a thread about nugent please. As it goes I believe Chris has worked hard in the minutes he has got and has been patient and deserves a shot, at who's expense? Not sure I care out of the 2 at the minute, both work hard with good link up, just not happening in front of goal.
mmfoxuk Posted 4 December 2013 Author Posted 4 December 2013 I'm not Slagging off Nugent I like the guy. He's a very clever in the way he plays and has a good head on his shoulders I believe Chris Wood Deserves a shot but as you say at whos expense? maybe even worth playing 3 up front?
Callabinho Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 The whole Nugent thing has got me scratching my head, if we we all agreed on here that next game he should be dropped, he will more than likely go out and get a brace the following game. There's a video on YouTube of Nugent in this Pompy days, just watch it and see if you sit there scratching your head and wondering what's changed as I did, in particular one clip where he bursts down the wing at pace beating three men and scoring? I think Nugents a top lad and a top player, however I would like to see more of the old Nuge!
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Wood is a better fisher in my opinion.
Captain... Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Well now we have lost we are allowed to make changes, so I would certainly consider giving Wood a chance, as long as we practice passing to his feet in training. It must be frustrating being brought on when chasing the game and have it lumped up to you in desperation.
Monsell1976 Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Yes, the rest would do nugent good, and with nugent not playing his best, if he doesn't get a chance, I think he will be pissed of and look at his options. Wood has been patient, took his chances, like the cup and then lost his place again. Big fan of nugent, but wood deserves a run in the side, then it's down to nugent to perform to win his spot back.
cc_star Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Not IMO Nugent & Vardy are a hardworking pair that create lots of opportunities for each other as well as getting stuck in & defending the front when required. A game where 10 out of 11 players don't turn up isn't an opportunity to stick the boot into one of them.

See your point, but for me they are both very wasteful, and have been over the good start, but for me nugent looks tired and out of sorts, and has for a few weeks now.For me wood is a more clinical finisher, and with a run of games, will start knocking a few in. I'm not getting on nugents back but him and others had chances last night, that should have at least hit the target, and if it's is down to fatigue or low confidence, the fixtures coming up need a striker who is clinical, as chances may be few and far between.
cityfanlee23 Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 To be honest, This is a story that baffles me, He was off form with the rest of the team last season, then had injuries, came back with a bang, then looks to be slowly boiling off again, And I wont make this a nugent post, But everyone knows my opinion on nugent (At the moment until i'm proved wrong) So for wood to be getting overlooked because of an off form striker, would be very degrading. This is a massive long shot, But I wouldnt be surprised if he is sold in january/summer, I'm not ITK on this, but It's just a pearson special! I am 75% sure he won't go, But there has always been doubts about his partnership with nuge, partnership with nige, his form, his injuries.. I'd love to see him hit form, because it's a shame seeing him looked over knowing what he is capable of!

I agree to an extent on the back of the loss it's the perfect time to make a change. Maybe try all three of them up front to start with at brighton and if things dont work out change it second half. 343 could look good against Brighton and knowing they have Wood, Nuge and Vardy bearing down on their defence will make them fill their pants

whitlock Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Just watched a few of Nuge's goals on YouTube for PNE and Pompey and it just looks like we have a worse version than they had. I can't remember the last time, Nuge ran at players, took them on, beat them, put the ball in the net whilst looking confident doing it all. I don't even feel confident of Nugent having a good first touch anymore. Wood question, yeah I would give him a run at Nuge's expense. It might suit us/Nuge for a while, of him coming on with fresh legs in the last 25 mins to kill off teams. We tend to play all our quickest players in the starting 11, bar Schlupp? Would be perfect for tiring defenders to have a fresh Nuge running at them. Didn't see Wood last night, but in all the games prior to that, in his appearances I think that he's been decent.

I got shot down when I said play vardy on the wing, Agree, He's not clinical enough to be a striker, but would be a terror on the wing with that pace, Let's hope he can cross
Happy Fox Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Vardy was very devastating as a Left Forward in a 4-3-3 during his Fleetwood days. But if we play 4-3-3 we would need a forward to hold up the ball, Wood won't do that perhaps GTF?
Johnny Cash Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Should he be starting instead of Nugent? It's so obvious that the question doesn't need asking.
Corky Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Will we include Wood's goals if they are penalties as Nugent will be dropped/ sold/ put in the reserves/ banned from the ground?
Kitchandro Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 I've thought Nugent increasingly lethargic this calendar year, and Wood increasingly energetic in his cameos since the start of the season. Both are capable of finishing but I just feel Nugent needs a kick up the arse. Too much moaning at the ref whenever a defender is stronger than him, rather than chasing it down like he used to.
cityfanlee23 Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Will we include Wood's goals if they are penalties as Nugent will be dropped/ sold/ put in the reserves/ banned from the ground? We will include them, but we will not let them overshadow his performances, if he offers nothing else in general for 11 months.
Nick Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Should he be starting instead of Nugent? With Nugent. Bench Vardy.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to leave in Jan tbh.
Guest Col city fan Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 I must be one of the only posters who believes Chris Wood isn't as good as many make out. I don't think he's a bad player, but maintain that if we are to drop Nugent, we need to play someone who is better than Nugent. I don't think Wood is better than Nugent. The success we have had so far this season is founded upon a strike partnership developing between Nuge and Vardy. Last night? I wasn't there. But my son was, who told me that we lost the midfield. Vardy and Nuge had little to feed on (as did Wood when he came on). Some chances yes, but not enough. Any striker is only as good as the chances they have. Nuge has missed some, sure, but remains our best striker imo.

Your sons assessment spot on mate, midfield for me had no shape, and left the defence exposed, and after knockeart went off offered no service to to forwards, just long balls over the top for vardy to chase. They did have patches of good passing, but few and far between, just not at the races. The strikers did have some chances you would have expected them to put away, and at least hit the target. Nugent is probably better than wood when they are both on form, but I think it's time for woods chance and give nugent a rest and kick up the arse.
