Bert Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 The draw is just over two days away now and I'm looking forward to it. One of the Un-seeded European teams is being moved at "random" Into pot 2, which means they will be drawn against one of the South American seeds as there can only be 2 European teams in a group. Would this benefit or hinder England if it's us that get moved?
C-man Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 From an entirely selfish viewpoint, I'm begging England don't get moved to pot 2. At the moment with us in pot 4, I have a 3/8 chance of seeing England. If they're moved to pot 2 then it falls to 1/8... But I would see them twice if we get drawn in group B! Not really bothered if it'll help or hinder we're going to have to beat the best either way if we want to win it and it makes no odds to me if we go out early doors or QF - we need to sort ourselves out somehow. Even a World Cup win would only serve to mask our issues.
21st Century Fox Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 Oh good. I was looking for somewhere to post this the other day....
Guest MattP Posted 4 December 2013 Posted 4 December 2013 If you avoid Chile I think you are better off being in Pot 4.

ScouseFox Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 We got Spain, Ivory Coast & South Korea in the rehearsal.

Dan Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 We got Spain, Ivory Coast & South Korea in the rehearsal. Think we'd fall over the line with that. Spain would have an easy 9 points.
Dan Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 The fact Italy and Brazil can be in a group is absolutely absurd.
Jimothy Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 Maybe so, but ultimately the goal would've been achieved. If we win this world cup it'll be a bigger shock than Greece in 2004 for me. What a ridiculous statement! Greece in 2004 where on a par with someone like New Zealand at the last world World Cup. By which I mean total an utter outsiders. Not even fancied to win a game, let alone the whole thing. I think most people expect us to at least make a decent go at getting out the group, and wouldn't be overly shocked if we did, Greece weren't even expected to get out the groups at the euros. They'd never won a tournament match before 2004. Greece was and will always be one of the biggest shocks not just in football, but in sport.

It was a miracle that Greece won it and it'll be a miracle if England win the World Cup.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 Not much in it. It was a miracle that Greece won it and it'll be a miracle if England win the World Cup. Odds for Greece to win Euro 2004 ranged from 80-1 to 150-1. England are about 25-1 to win the World Cup next year. So massive difference.
Jimothy Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 Not much in it. It was a miracle that Greece won it and it'll be a miracle if England win the World Cup. It won't be a miracle, it'll be a shock if we win it. It'd be the same as Spurs winning the Premier League, whereas Greece winning was similar to, well I was going to say Accrington Stanley winning the premier league, but they're not on it so I'll say Palace winning it this season. Odds for Greece to win Euro 2004 ranged from 80-1 to 150-1. England are about 25-1 to win the World Cup next year. So massive difference. Odds aren't always he best thing to look at as patriotic England fans bet on England bringing the odds down, but I get what you mean, England will be about 10th favourite, where as Greece were the rank outsider, nobody was expected to win less than them.
Kitchandro Posted 5 December 2013 Posted 5 December 2013 I remember having one of those Euro preview magazines in 2004. Each team had a couple of pages. For Greece the headline was 'Not even Travolta in his tightest leather trousers could save this Greece'. It wouldn't be as big a shock as that one. But when we look back in hindsight, were Greece any worse than us? They certainly were a better team than we thought they were. There weren't any great teams in that tournament and less rounds to negotiate.

To me it sounds like people over-rating England and under-rating Greece. OK, my initial comment was a bit OTT. But I still think there's far less between the two scenarios than we like to think. Out of the 13 European sides there I'd rank us as worse than Spain, Germany, Italy, Holland & Belgium, and at a similar level to France, Portugal, Switzerland, Bosnia, Russia & Croatia, and better than Greece. I think of the ones I've put us around the same level at, we're arguably worse than France or Portugal and arguably better than Switzerland & Bosnia, so in terms of standard, the nearest to us are IMO, Russia & Croatia. Bear in mind here, that this is being played completely away from home for all European sides, in a totally different climate, where you're facing already better sides than you away from home. Would people seriously fancy us against Chile, Colombia or Uruguay? Let alone Brazil or Argentina. Looking at Euro 2004 - Greece benefited from both being under-estimated by the masses, and teams such as Germany completely bottling it. It was a shock, but I still think with it being a 1 in 16 compared to a 1 in 32, where England are in a completely different climate (Portugal & Greece wouldn't be too dis-similar), we're completely up against it. Today's rehearsal was frightening. The most frightening thing being, that was probably a better draw than most we could get. You'd think we should manage past it but it's not completely unrealistic we blow that. South Korea & Ivory Coast are both banana skins. Spain would get 7 or 9 points, most likely 9. My point all along, is that both Greece in 2004 & England in 2014 are completely up against it. That's why to me, it'd be as much of a shock if England won it. If we get to the quarters then Hodgson's done very well in my opinion and if we beat a South American side along the way, then that's a very, very good effort.
Jimothy Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 I hope we get South FIFA 14 Coins kaufen Korea in the actual draw.
Kitchandro Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 Rio Ferdinand will be part of the BBC punditry team for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, BBC Sport has announced. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25250691 Fvcking hell. They always have to draft someone unbearable in. Last time we needed a translator for Adebayor. Now this cvnt. BBC are really going downhill.
leicsmac Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 I hope we get South FIFA 14 Coins kaufen Korea in the actual draw.I don't. I'll get fvcking murdered over here, win or lose, so I'd have to pray for a draw. Not to mention they'd be tougher to beat than many on here think. Very well organised defensively.

leicsmac Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 I was just making a joke, because he slipped some kind of advert in the middle of South Korea. I completely missed that. Face palm. It's been a long day.
Ric Flair Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 I think i'd rather listen to Eric Hall talk about Dennis Wise for 90 minutes than be subjected to Rio Ferdinands wisdom, this is a neanderthal who forgot to be present for several drugs tests.

Greece had never won a single game at a major tournament before 2004. England are former world champions.
ScouseFox Posted 6 December 2013 Posted 6 December 2013 What time we talking for the actual draw? Not the "pre draw bullshit" but the actual draw starting? Any ideas?
