Walshy5 Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 This is a very big problem that we have and it has been for years. 21 attempts today and only one goal and that was from the spot. Also we havent scored from open play in our past two homes games. If we want to finish in the top 2 a new striker is a must in jan. I know im going to get some abuse because we're top etc but we need to look at the big picture.
Larry_LCFC Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 Some of the shooting was ridiculous. Nugents shot that went out for a throw was pathetic. He should have finished atleast 2 easy chances. We encourage players to have a shot rather than passing it on and on, but if row z is the best we can manage, we may have a problem. Nugent was just one of many today!
Harry - LCFC Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 I do agree with this. As much as things are going well we really do makes things hard for ourselves when they shouldn't be. There'll come a time when we're winning by a goal and we let it slip, that's when we'll regret not sticking another one in earlier. Thankfully we've not been made to suffer so far.

We are top without a new striker, why is it crazy to think we could go the second half of the season without any additions?
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 I tried to explain this, statistically, a few weeks ago. We dont score enough goals from midfield. Thats ok when the strikers are scoring. When they aint, it becomes more of a problem.
AKCJ Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 Can we look at Adam le Fondre please? 7 in 15 for this season, got 12 in the PL last season. Can't get a start for Reading. I think we can tempt him, can't we?

Also we havent scored from open play in our past two homes games. If we want to finish in the top 2 a new striker is a must in jan. I actually disagree while we are undoubtedly far too wasteful we are taking enough chances to sit top at Xmas with Wood and Nugent not producing anything like the form in front of goal we now both are capable of, so I see no reason why we can't maintain our current level of taking two of twenty chances and hope one of those two starts to find the net. We're fortunate Vardy has picked up and chipped in but even he misses a hatful and I don't think we're going to get much more out of him than we're currently seeing. Plus striker who is technically a better finisher than Nugent or Wood is going to be well, well out of our price range. If we have got the funds I'm all for adding although as I'm sure someone has added before I've finished this post, I'd prefer to get a winger in before a striker anyway
Kitchandro Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 Nugent's return from open play is pitiful, Vardy's isn't great either. Wood is injured, and Waghorn and Schlupp are our only other options. Of course we need another striker. Col, I take your point about the midfielders not scoring - then again Knocky and Dyer both get a decent amount of goals. The fact is, we create numerous openings every game and our strikers goal return is quite poor. When we're looking at goals, not chances created, you can only look at the strikers first. It will bite us on the bum at times if we don't convert our dominance into goals.

Plus we cant keep riding our look like this all season.

Just look at today Kitch.. we must have had three or four shots in that first half that blazed over or were comfortably saved. James and Drinkwater were great today, but I maintain neither can shoot for shit. We MUST kill teams off when we get the chance to. This side with a Central midfilder who can score goals I think, would likely win this league.

But how are we riding our luck? If anything there's more to come, we had 61% possession today and 22 shots at goal.

And Central midfielders who can score goals cost money, I'd quite like a winger that scores goals and a striker that consistantley hits 20 league goals. They cost money. We don't have any money.
Simonb Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 We got three points ffs yes we should have won by more but forget the doom mongering. . Plus we are one of the leagues top scorers... yea weve got about 10 pens converted but youve still gotta win them... I would like another option up top.. but id rather support what we have for now ... we are top of the league for a reason!! Nuge n vardy do great work defensively too which helps the team play higher up the field... wr could get another yakubu who'll score 15 from January but they dont help the team defensively and we concede more goals and drop points pearson knows what he's doing
The Horse's Mouth Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 If it was a big problem we wouldn't be top of the league
BoneDog Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 We let Moussa go too soon. He might have come in handy this season. Not that I'm complaining btw. 2 efforts at QPR and one bostin like Steve Austin goal to get three points. 21 efforts today, three points and top of the league.

And yet you seem to think King - a proven goalscoring midfield player for this club - is only worth a start in about 1 out of 3 (very specific at that) matches. You can't have it both ways. Anyway it could be worse, we could have spent £10 million on attacking players in the summer, have 2 ex-England strikers in the squad and have 24 goals from 22 games.
Johnny Cash Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 Chris Wood would have bagged a few today.

This creates the problem of effectively playing with 10 men & would hinder our whole game which is built around workrate & defending from the front. Not digging at Cottee at all, was awesome poacher - it's just the game is different now. 2pts clear, top of the league, only side to average over 2pts/game... I think they way we're doing things is better than what any other team is doing. Missed chances could well cost us, but with our wage bill can we afford to improve on what we have?

Sorry... do you mean King who has scored what? One goal this season? Id like a real goal threat from that central position. As you say though, we cant have it all.

As you say though, we cant have it all. Three this season. But to laugh off that he's not a goal scoring midfielder is simply stupid. He's scored more than Knockaert who has played more games in the league this season and iirc the same as Drinkwater (maybe one more because one was cup and we all know they don't count) who has also played more.
Langley Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 As long as we're creating chances I'm not worried. We're not top of the league for no reason.
BoneDog Posted 26 December 2013 Posted 26 December 2013 Andy King will always be a legend to me. I love his face, his goals, his hair, his football and I will explode the next time he rises like a salmon and knocks one in with his head. You can't say fairer than that.
