davieG Posted 27 December 2013 Posted 27 December 2013 M11 Christmas Eve crash driver has 'incredible escape' The vehicle was effectively "sliced" in half by the collision said the Essex fire service A driver had an "incredible escape" from serious injury after a car was "sliced" in two when it hit a sign on the M11, Essex Fire Service has said. The vehicle left the road and collided with a large motorway sign at junction 9a near Great Chesterford at about 14:00 GMT on Tuesday. No-one was trapped in the vehicle when fire crews from Cambridge, Newport and Saffron Walden arrived. Firefighters gave first aid to two people at the scene. Nigel Webb, Saffron Walden incident commander, said the impact had "effectively sliced the vehicle in half sending the front of the vehicle into the nearside bushes and the rear half onto the hard shoulder". He added that it was "simply an incredible escape for the driver". Five fire crews attended the crash on the M11 on Christmas Eve
Bayfox Posted 27 December 2013 Posted 27 December 2013 How quick do you have to be going to slice your car in 2.
Jimothy Posted 28 December 2013 Posted 28 December 2013 Looks like his car could be a write off. Nah, little bit of T-Cut and it'll be fine.
Guesty Posted 28 December 2013 Posted 28 December 2013 Whoever makes this car, just stick this pic as their advert with nothing else but simple text on a 30 sec TV advert and they should see sales rocket.

I don't know - a car that's sliced in half that easily probably wouldn't make me want to buy it!
Parafox Posted 29 December 2013 Posted 29 December 2013 Crumple zone technology proven to work! I think the impact velocity and the point of impact effectively caused a "whip" effect and the car wrapped around the post and the weight of the engine caused it to rip away from the body of the car taking most of the fron end with it. The fire service still cut the roof off... They always do. I've seen them do it at a rear end shunt before.
Rob1742 Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 A fireman mate of mine has said to me many times that the chances of surviving an accident has a great deal to do with the car you are driving. Many times he went to crashes where cars disintegrated, whereas other makes of car protected the driver from the impact. I tried to see what car this was, as it clearly just split up and could easily have seen a bad situation here. Wearing a seatbelt is crucial and a car with well known impact protection can save your life. This was just from someone who saw many survive accidents and many where he saw deaths

The bigger saloons (they used a rolls Royce) keeps the passenger compartment pretty intact and the outsides crumpled.
ADK Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 Depends on the type of accident I suppose. A small car in a collision with a much larger car is going to come off worse. A small car that rolls over might not be any worse off or better than a larger car.
Rob1742 Posted 30 December 2013 Posted 30 December 2013 He was saying the Audi and BMW type cars are safer. He did not mention the size, just the makes:

Everything is just too close and more likely to trap you. Then again, I have seen a Rolls Royce in an accident with very little damage but 2 guys died (one was a West Brom director). Often I have approched a scene and thought "this is bad" only to find everyone out of the cars and walking around.
