I miss the.......

I miss the days when the ground wasn't full of women and children who seem to get the impression that the football community is there to bend to their whims.

Couldn't agree more. Sat next to a woman when people started singing she put her fingers in her ears. What the hell are you doing at the football?

I miss the days when we could celebrate goals without waiting for the goal music to kick in as confirmation.

Tell me about it! Hate goal music with a passion.

The true football commentators:

Barry Davies - ' oh yes for the youngster' (Joe Waters goal against QPR), ' Melrose..Yes' (Quarter Final against Shrewsbury)

John Motson -' Oh what a goal by Ronnie Radford'

Hugh Johns - ' One nothing Villa', ' Stand back for Andy Peake' (goal against Newcastle 1978)

David Coleman - ' And Withe hasn't seen Gemmil... he has now ....two nil'

Peter Jones (Radio Two) - ' Blue shirt outside his white shorts...'

Steve Lambden (Radio Leicester) - did a great job despite being a Derby fan. Dennis Coath used to be in the studio.

Brian Moore - ' Across the face of goal...'

Gerald Sindstadt ' Oh I say what a goal..'

Waiting to buy the Sports Mercury at the local paper store at around 5.30pm to read Bill Anderson's report on the game.

The concrete wall behind the advertising hoardings where I used to sit as a young lad to watch the game.

Being allowed to invade the pitch after a momentous occasion ( beating Charlton under Jock Wallace to secure promotion, drawing with Burnley under Gordon Milne to secure promotion)

Players who came through the ranks (Lineker, Ramsey, May, O'Neill, Kitson)

Wingers who could take full backs on (Weller, Lynex, Glover)

Songs from PEN3 ('Sweet Molly Malone', ' Bring on the Sunderland and Arsenal', 'Shipman Out'...)

Specific chants for players ('He's here, he's there he's every ******* where Alan Young/Alan Smith', ' Oh Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary Lineker', ' Stevie, Stevie Lynex on the wing', 'Venus for England', 'Who throws petrol bombs, Bob Hazel', 'Jari,Jari', 'Its not God its only Andy Peake')

Seeing top players like Linker in the programme with keys to a Fiat Punto!

Black and white TV, making it more of a challenge to decipher the teams.

Roy of the Rovers magazine to read about Roy's great exploits.

Subbuteo football - somehow Leicester always used to win the matches that I played.

Shoot magazine. In the 'Focus On' section all players liked steak as their favourite food and lager as their favourite drink.

The team tabs that you collected with the Shoot magazine at the start of each season.

Absolutely, me too! Football Italia, thought that was a great programme with Gary Westonholme? I think it sounded like Goooolachio ( 'goal azio' means goal action or something very similar).

I used to run a full league with those league ladders and a dice. Funnily enough Leicester always won division one while forest languished in division 4.

The commentators of old just described the action in an honest manner. Today's lot tell us that every shot is 'magnificant' and every save is 'superb' to give the impression that we are watching something truly amazing rather than a bunch of over paid players in an average league. If only we could rid ourselves of the likes of Shearer, Hansen et al and just have 45 minutes worth of action, so that we as the viewers can make up our own mind about the key incidents without the need for their 'expert' knowledge.

I put the teams into a hat for each division and then drew them out. The first one out was bottom, then second to bottom etc. Within a few years the likes of Rochdale and Hartleppol were winning the first division and Liverpool were languishing in the fourth!

Spending saturday evenings with mates in the pub going through every detail of any goals scored that day, with very little tv coverage it was the only way you could relive them.

Now they're shown so often from so many angles that they seem to lose some of the magic.

When football wasnt so pre-determined by managers, players just went out and played or so it seemed to me, when anyone could take a throw in rather than waiting for the fullback to run halfway up the pitch only to lose it. When quick free kicks were allowed when within sight of the goal.

Football seems to be all about formations and tactics least wise that's what most of the pre and post match chat on here is about. There's very little discussion about individual examples of skill or the details of a goal and its build up.

I miss the flair of Momo Sylla charging down the right wing, scaring the sh*t out of defenders.

And I also miss the championship, that was a far better show than the football league show, no offence Manish, and was on at a sensible time

What about the bloke in Pen 4 who used to shout out "Come on you City Slickers!" in a weird, posh voice?

those were the days , pen 4 banter with the other pens and making sure you was not in front of a barrier when the crowd surged forward .
