Leicester - "The Perennial Choker", "The Divers" and "The Referee's Pet"

Horrendously bored and can't sleep so been trawling through some other forums out of interest. There are a few points that really intrigue me:

1. While many forums have a balance of fans there are a high proportion of fans of teams, especially ones around us in the table (funnily enough), who keep referring to the fact that we always choke towards the end of the season. For the life of me I cannot understand this. Our horrendous plummet towards the end of last season seems to have given teams the impression that we must always do that and we don't have the mentality to finish a season well. I may well be wrong as I've not really gone to check our points haul towards the end of seasons since our existence, however I am pretty sure it isn't exactly a regular or renowned thing for us to do!?!? Maybe they just all live in hope that we will do it another time this season so they don't have to try and perform better to get past us (ie. they're all very scared we will run away with it - just the impression I get)

2. The second point refers to the divers/cheaters tag we seem to have also been given in places. Rather than find out how we have been awarded penalties, they seem to have come to the same conclusion that we must set out to cheat to win penalties (especially the fine fellas from the Burnley forum who, on the most part with a couple of exceptions, seem to believe we are a "favoured team"). In fact, I rightly remember someone on here in another thread mentioning how we have probably had a similar number of legitimate penalties turned down as we have had debatable ones.

3. Finally, the second point really leads on to this one with the amount of penalties we have won. It seems referees now love us and want to give us every decision they can, according to everyone else. It's all very amusing to be honest. I'll be the first to admit from an objective perspective when we get the right side of decisions that are wrongly made - the perfect example being Knocky's in the play offs where I thought he dived and thought it at the time withholding my celebrations.

This is not a dig at other fans but merely a catalyst for conversation about the perception of our club this season. The main questions are why are we seen like this? Is this in anyway representative of why we might be top (luck and bias?)? And, is it valid for everyone to give us these tags?

For me the answers are jealousy/envy, NO and NO again. Be interesting to see everyone's thoughts.

Also attached a paused screenshot of the first goal from 'Boro game highlights. Hard to tell whether right or wrong decision for me as we can't see along the line. Certainly not the "yard out" that has been banded about. And, yes, that is the furthest forward the ball went (did many run throughs to check).

EDIT: having run through again I'm pretty sure not all of the ball has gone out (from the angle given)

On the first goal at Boro, it seems strange to me when managers criticize referees when their decision was only a small part of what transpired. He should be slating his defender's shite attempt at shepherding the ball, and the other players for giving up before the whistle had been blown. He should use it as an example in the Boro dressing room of not giving up on anything and chasing what appear to be lost causes.

On the subject of this thread, they are saying these things because we are winning games and that's what people say about teams that are top. Same every year, it's just not normally us.

I'm now very confident the ball didn't go out. Thought it from my view in the Kop during the game as well.

Funny, the OP has wrote about something that has got my goat recently, especially after the Boro game. Looking at the penalties we have had, I can say that pretty much all of them are stonewall penalties in my view.

I wrote this - Leicester Penalty Debate - showing all the penalties we have had so far. In my view, it seems that our players are just too quick and defenders are making rash, lunging challenges. This is especially evident with Vardy who seems to get chopped down when he is running away from goal as I don't think Defenders expect that he will get a touch on the ball when they dive in.

there was a video about our penalties so far this season and if any honest football fan cant say we deserved most of them then there lying.

Look at Palace last season with Zaha, they was in the same situation; his pace kept winning penalties...& the same thing is happening now with Vardy etc.

On the whole chocking thing..I think last season was a first for how bad it was. then again, I look at last season's team and see a very young inexperienced team as a whole, while we still have the same team as last season I think the lads will be made of more this season; and the fact we have a few older heads now in the squad who have done it before should help. So Im hoping we dont but its at the back of my mind.

On the whole thing though, I'd agree with you; there does seem to be that element of jealousy from other teams, kinda like Man Utd in there prime used to get. while we aren't not Man Utd(thank god :sweating: )

Its wankers like Durham who start this type of thing off. They wouldn't moan if the shoe was on the other foot.

Most other fans still reckon we will bottle it towards the end of the season though. Especially florist.

A lot of it boils down to jealousy. Other clubs can't bare to see a team they think they're bigger than or think they've a divine right to go up be seen to being doing better than their own team.

Some Leicester fans would do exactly the same, as seen last season with Palace.

Coming from the Florists who are the biggest bottlers in recent times. There small squad under Billy has meant they always tended to run out of steam at the back end of the season.

The ones that makes me laugh is when they criticise our city as a shite hole... yeah a shite hole it maybe that will more than likely be playing Premier League football next year!!

It's also pretty ironic coming from some of the fans.

It's hardly like Burnley is Monte Carlo.

Do the people criticising opposition forums ever read what's written on here sometimes? Fans are the same all across the country, we're no better.

The choking thing is a bit daft really, something went drastically wrong which became harder to put right the longer it went on as confidence levels inevitably dropped. We actually ended the season in decent form and fought our way back in to the play offs only to lose in such a dramatic fashion. Fighting our way back after a horrendous run is hardly choking neither is 2 decent saves from Watford's keeper and a good counter-attack.

Most of the time, we end seasons well if there's promotion or play-offs riding on it. Quite a few times we've come up with really good runs at the end. Beating Fulham to promotion with a long unbeaten run and good runs under Little, O'Neill and Pearson to get in the play-offs.

Those fans are clinging to false hopes if they think we're chokers.

The sniping over the penalties is just uninformed opinion rooted in jealousy. The footage is there for all to see if they could be bothered. Only 2 penalties you could consider debatable.

As for the goal against Boro, if you move the goal to where Nugent is, how many opposing fans do you think would be so adamant the ball was all the way over the line then?

I honestly can't say for sure either way but it doesn't appear to be out.

Essentially, it all mainly boils down to most Championship defenders not being able to cope with speedy attackers à la Vardy when the latter approach the box.

And with an eight-point gap at the moment, many opposing fans (in particular the ones in the playoff mix, the promotion hopefuls) realize that with one team running away up front, there's more competition for the remaining automatic promotion spot.

At this stage of the season, I'd consider it to be a mix between jealousy and increasing nervousness.

It's also a part of modern society in my opinion to be disparaging and negative about everyone who isn't part of your immediate group. To always find fault, and not to admit that someone or something is actually better, seems to be the norm, especially with the youngsters in my experience.

As for the pens, they've all be earned, and mostly by JV and his terrific pace.

I just realise other fans at the moment are clutching at straws not looking at facts like some spoilt child not getting their own way.Laugh! I think I've shat myself.

On the news today there was a bit about some authority in Surrey not allowing winners and losers at U12 Rugby and if some team is winning they should let the losing team have some of their best players for the remainder of the match. Can just see these teams moaning at us looking in the rule book now hoping this is in it.

1) urban myth

2) shows their ignorance

3) as opposed to other managers and media pundits saying we are the best team in the league

It's a shame that others can not give credit where it's due. Where as I don't think we are as good as WBA or Newcastle when they where last in this division we are the best for a long time and still improving

I imagine Nuge had no idea that had gone out. At the speed things had happened, he probably hadn't even looked at the ball, and if he did, he would have just seen the ball and line as he would have been looking from above.

Clubs are justing finding any and every excuse possible to slate us, we are guilty of the same. We slated Cardiff to no end about how the will choke last year.

Posted

I'm still not sure it even went out. When the ball is on the ground only a small area touches the ground, you might see the part touching the floor over the line, but some of it can still be hanging over the line.

Posted

Reminds me of what a lot of us said about Cardiff last season, we were convinced they'd choke, they never did and we looked pretty stupid in May.

it didn't,because if it had of done the more than capable linesman would have flagged.Case solved!

The thing that annoys me as a Leicester fan is how bothered we get by what other fans think of us and how concerned we are with what other clubs are doing. It's massively evident in the age of the internet when you see countless threads on here about what other teams are doing. I suppose there's nothing wrong with that but we do tend to get caught up in it all.

They did choke... Just not as bad as eveyone else on their tail!

Everyone does it, there are as many threads about Leicester on some burnley sites as their is about them.

We post just as much shit about other sides, I wouldn't worry about it, there were plenty of comments last season about Watford's dodgy loan deals, Cardiff choking and their owner being a bellend, Palace getting lots of penalties and selling Zaha then getting him back.

This season there has been plenty of chat about QPR's over paid squad and their manager being a crook, Forest trying to buy their way out the league, Burnley being just a one man team and will fade away, Derby being overrated.

Let them, and us, talk shit, as long as the team continue to do the talking on the pitch I'll be happy.
