Soar Fox Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 For the deluded. Ah is it? Cheers. Did you see it? Was it worth watching or..? Sorry Dan only just saw this. Yes I caught the last 40 minutes of it yesterday. I found it quite interesting on how they plan for the World Cup as far as planning on flying bed sheets and quilt covers over. Roy Hodgson spoke very well I thought and Glenn Hoddle is a very intelligent footballing man. I don't know if he's involved but the FA should be looking at bringing in Hoddle to help youth development.
Corky Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Hodgson knows his stuff, having managed international sides at tournaments before so his experience will be vital in these situations in terms of preparation, training, itinerary etc.
Guest MattP Posted 25 February 2014 Posted 25 February 2014 Roy Hodgson spoke very well I thought and Glenn Hoddle is a very intelligent footballing man. I don't know if he's involved but the FA should be looking at bringing in Hoddle to help youth development. Hoddle was one of the best footballing brains we had in charge, his tactical display of leaving two strikers (when Beckham got sent off) on to rotate between wings with Shearer and Owen in the 2-2 with Argentina in the World Cup was brilliant. Kicked out for nothing to do with football as well, our FA are clueless. Roy is a nice bloke though, did make me laugh when he asked the stadium staff to put 1-0 England up on the scoreboard though, shows his mindset Not even thinking about 2 or 3 nil.

Manwell Pablo Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 Don't all start putting Terry in your 23 man squad, he's retired. He's not coming, not until he announces he's out of retirement anyway.
Uncle Albert Posted 26 February 2014 Author Posted 26 February 2014 that's a bit harsh if it's based off one game. I'm a fan of Carrick, but last night and the majority of the season he hasn't been great, has he? Like no other Man United player has. Phil Jones made it in the squad purely based on his versatility and you can't leave Wayne Rooney out. Shame that my squad won't actually be the squad, we will have to put up with Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley. Don't all start putting Terry in your 23 man squad, he's retired. He's not coming, not until he announces he's out of retirement anyway. Don't take anyone seriously who fails to put Phil Jagielka in their squad.

Not had the best season granted and he was dogo last night just the way you said "after last night"
MC Prussian Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 Keepers 1. Joe Hart 2. Forster 3. ?? Ruddy's having an excellent season so far. Would deserve a call-up for the World Cup squad.

Roy Hodgson spoke very well I thought and Glenn Hoddle is a very intelligent footballing man. I don't know if he's involved but the FA should be looking at bringing in Hoddle to help youth development. I've got it on record so might watch it on Friday or something. Cheers. If more coaches thought like Hoddle then we would be a far better side. No doubt about it. Hoddle was one of the best footballing brains we had in charge, his tactical display of leaving two strikers (when Beckham got sent off) on to rotate between wings with Shearer and Owen in the 2-2 with Argentina in the World Cup was brilliant. Why did he ask them to do that?
GingerrrFox Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 England played the best football in the past 20 years under Hoddle and it's an absolute travesty that he was ousted by the FA because he wasn't a yes man. The 3-5-2 he had England playing was magic in that 98 World Cup, he managed to make the traditional English way of 2 strikers up top work whilst having 3 central midfielders to control games.Anyway my squad for now would be1) Hart2) Forster3) Butland (experience because he's the future)4) Walker5) Smalling6) Baines7) Cole8) Cahill9) Jagielka10) Jones11) Gerrard12) Carrick13) Wilshere14) Barkley15) Shelvey16) Milner17) Townsend18) Oxlade-Chamberlain19) Zaha20) Lallana21) Rooney22) Sturridge23) Welbeck
kingcarr21 Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 All this talk about gettin the players mentally prepared to take penalties is all well and good but i honestly cant see us getting out the group. If we were to get to a penalty shoot out then as far as im concerned we hav over achieved. I would like to think that they can keep the pressure off england this tournament as many fans think the same as me. I hope im proved wrong and we get out the group and play with no fear as we would have over achieved. With less expectancy then england could throw up some surprises this world cup. I had a dream last night of hodgson doing post match interview on the pitch after winning the world cup with the biggest grin on his face. Im hoping that this will eventually be deja vu
Dan Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 It's a better solution than practicising penalties in training. They're all technically good enough to score a penalty, bloody hell even I am - it's the mental side of it that we fall on so a psychologist, whilst I'm not expecting miracles, might be of some help. I agree with the last post too. We've over-achieved if we've got to a penalty shoot-out.
Soar Fox Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 You can practise penalties everyday for a month and score 99% of them. But it's totally different when you're in that situation. You can't practise under that sort of pressure with 70,000 people watching.

You can't practise under that sort of pressure with 70,000 people watching. I'd have each friendly game England play between now and the beginning of the World Cup finish with a penalty shoot out. Even if one side won the game 2-1 have a penalty shoot out that doesn't effect the match result. Just so the players can practice everything over and over again.

Even if one side won the game 2-1 have a penalty shoot out that doesn't effect the match result. Just so the players can practice everything over and over again. But then surely opposition teams could watch england take these penalties and take info from them. I listened to talksport on the way home yesterday and a point was made which i thought was a gd idea not sure if anyone else heard this aswel. They suggested that behind closed doors your penalty takers who would take a spot kick in a shootout pick one place where they would put there spot kick and continously practise kicking it in the same place (they quoted 150 times) until they have perfected it. Then if it came to it let hodgson pick the 5 players to take there penalties with them players already knowing in there mind exactly where they are going to kick it. You can see on the faces of players when walking from the halfway line to the penalty spot that they are thinking too much about where to put it and more often than not change there mind during the run up and ultimately miss. Surely already knowing before the game even starts where they would put there penalty would help ease the nerves and keep there mentality to get the job done. I thought this was a great idea and cant really see any major downside to using this method. What do you guys think??
Uncle Albert Posted 26 February 2014 Author Posted 26 February 2014 Carroll anyone? Made my 23 mate, a different option, a must go for me. Hardly anyone else who is English who is scoring goals apart from Sturridge. -- I wouldn't say it was just Hoddle who got England playing good football, need to realise that Hoddle had taken over after a pretty successful Euro 96 under Terry Venables. England were pretty much playing 3-5-2 through 1996, with Adams, Southgate, Pearce as the three central defenders, Anderton/Neville RWB, McManaman LWB, a midfield three of Ince, Gazza and Platt and then Shearer and Sheringham upfront. Hoddle was great but Venables started that team off, Hoddle got England playing good football just like El Tel did.
ScouseFox Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 Yeah I'd definitely take Carroll the big loveable brute. Just for that header vs Sweden. Can't believe someone up there has put Jonjo Shelvey in ahead of Henderson and is taking Zaha. Jesus.
