Uncle Albert Posted 26 February 2014 Author Posted 26 February 2014 Yeah I'd definitely take Carroll the big loveable brute. Just for that header vs Sweden. Can't believe someone up there has put Jonjo Shelvey in ahead of Henderson and is taking Zaha. Jesus. He's ginger and has also decided he would take FIVE Man United players, clearly his opinion doesn't count mate.
ScouseFox Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 For what it's worth... GKs: Joe Hart, Ben Foster, Fraser Forster (tbh who cares) Defence: Cole, Baines, Jagielka, Lescott, Cahill, one of the shit united ones or someone like Caulker or Curtis Davies and hope nobody gets injured, Johnson, Walker. Midfield: Gerrard, Lampard, Henderson, Wilshere, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sterling, Milner, Walcott if fit (Townsend if he plays anything like enough before June) if not then Welbeck I guess. Forwards: Rooney, Sturridge, Carroll Shit that was very hard. Poor Roy.
Dan Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 But then surely opposition teams could watch england take these penalties and take info from them. I listened to talksport on the way home yesterday and a point was made which i thought was a gd idea not sure if anyone else heard this aswel. They suggested that behind closed doors your penalty takers who would take a spot kick in a shootout pick one place where they would put there spot kick and continously practise kicking it in the same place (they quoted 150 times) until they have perfected it. Then if it came to it let hodgson pick the 5 players to take there penalties with them players already knowing in there mind exactly where they are going to kick it. You can see on the faces of players when walking from the halfway line to the penalty spot that they are thinking too much about where to put it and more often than not change there mind during the run up and ultimately miss. Surely already knowing before the game even starts where they would put there penalty would help ease the nerves and keep there mentality to get the job done. I thought this was a great idea and cant really see any major downside to using this method. What do you guys think?? It isn't a technical problem with these players. I'm pretty sure the majority of them are capable of sticking the ball in the same part of the goal from 12 yards time and time again. They could stick it top left corner 150 times in training - they get out to a penalty shoot-out in Brazil, who's to say they don't aim for the same corner and get it wrong? It's a mental thing. It's one of those things you can't really train, you either have it or you don't.
Soar Fox Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 Glen Hoddle said the other night that when it got to penalties in 1998 against Argentina 4 players turned round and said they don't want one. Beckham had been sent off and he said he didn't want Seaman taking one. You can practise all you like but like Dan said it's a mental thing and you can't train for what pressure each player is under.
Stadt Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 It'd do us a favour if one player could take numerous penalties like in ice hockey.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 For the deluded. Ok then our minimum expectation is to have our worst World Cup ever.
Father Ted Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 Goalkeepers: Hart, Forster, Foster. Defenders: Baines, Cole, G.Johnson, Walker, Jagielka, Cahill, Jones. Midfielders: Gerrard, Wilshere, Henderson, Lallana, Lampard, Oxlade, Townsend, Sterling, Milner. Strikers: Rooney, Sturridge, Carroll, Welbeck
Stadt Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 For once we actually seem to have a bit of a selection headache with decent players but we're still lacking top quality players.
Guest MattP Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 If Rooney or Sturridge get injured we are absolutely ****ed. If they both get injured we might not even score a goal.
whoareyaaa Posted 26 February 2014 Posted 26 February 2014 Theo is a big blow if he don't recover, he was starting to look a great player who could find the net and open teams up.
Jace Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 It's depressing me looking at these England lineups
Jimothy Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 Hart Foster Ruddy/Forster/Butland (any of them will do) Baines Shaw Cahill Jagielka Jones Caulker Walker Johnson Gerrard Wilshere Henderson Lallana Oxlade-Chamberlain Barkley Barry Rooney Sturridge Lambert Rodreguiz Sterling
Samilktray Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 I can't believe so many people are saying take Carroll. Until he finds a bit of form he wouldn't be anywhere near my squad.
Uncle Albert Posted 27 February 2014 Author Posted 27 February 2014 I can't believe so many people are saying take Carroll. Until he finds a bit of form he wouldn't be anywhere near my squad. I'd rather Roy take an out of form Carroll than an out of form Welbeck or Lambert.
Bert Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 I would go: Hart Foster Ruddy Cole Baines Johnson Walker Jagielka Cahill Jones Smalling Gerrard Wilshere Lampard Henderson Oxlade-Chamberlain Lallana Barkley Milner (Harsh on Sterling, Townsend hasn't done enough) Rooney Sturridge Carroll Lambert (Can see Welbeck being preferred to Carroll though)

Poor that Rob.
ScouseFox Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 I can't believe so many people are saying take Carroll. Until he finds a bit of form he wouldn't be anywhere near my squad. Who else we gonna take? We can't go to the World Cup with just Rooney and Sturridge. Carroll's different and foreign defences won't know what to do with him when he comes off the bench and bags the winner.
Bert Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 You're better than that, no Sterling and you've included Smalling?! Poor that Rob. It was tough. I don't really rate Smalling but I picked it more based on what I think Hodgson will go for rather than what I'd like to see. Like I said it's harsh on Sterling but England generally take 4 cb's to the World Cup at the expense of an attacking player.
RowlattsFox Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 I'd rather take lambert than Carroll. Welbeck will go and to be fair to him he has always done ok for England. One of jones or smalling will go, maybe even both. Unfortunately there are no other defensive options, people are saying caulker but he's part of a very poor Cardiff team. Only other option I can think of is shawcross but he's untested.

Jones made my squad purely on the fact he can play centre back, right back and the holding role. I would even take Jones as the second right back ahead of Kyle Walker (who has been shocking this season, even worse than Glen Johnson), to free taking an advanced player.
RowlattsFox Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 I was thinking the exact same about jones as cover for centre back and right back. You also have Milner who could play as emergency right back, even remember Gerard playing there once or twice. However I reckon Roy prefers smalling who could also cover both positions. I liked Jones, but he's been messed about position wise. He has the makings of a good centre back for me. Lescott would be in my squad behind Cahill and jagielka, but we always talk of picking form players but he rarely plays.
Jace Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 I would take Jamie Vardy as back up to Rooney and Sturridge

Yeah sounds daft when you suggest players like Milner and Gerrard but I fully agree with you. They're capable of filling in there if needed. I'm not for one minute suggesting taking him, and this is the first time I have ever mentioned his name regarding England, IF Jon Flanagan can keep his form up for the remainder of the season do people think he could be in with a shout? Defensively he is good enough, attack wise not so great but he is solid. We talk about tournament experience for players, why not take Johnson and Flanagan as right backs and Baines and Shaw as left backs. Can only think of Clyne and Chambers both of Southampton who are young right backs in with a chance of having an England future, apart from maybe Flanagan.
Dan Posted 27 February 2014 Posted 27 February 2014 Do you have to take 3 GK's and 20 outfield players? I'd seriously toy with the idea of making it 2-21 if we're allowed to.
Uncle Albert Posted 27 February 2014 Author Posted 27 February 2014 Tom Cleverley makes the squad for the Denmark game.
