LCFC v Forest - Police Warn Against Racist Chanting

Police have issued the following statement ahead of Leicester City’s match against Nottingham Forest at The City Ground tomorrow (Wednesday 19 February, kick-off 7.45pm).

The game is expected to see in excess of 28,000 supporters attend, and working with both clubs, the force wants fans to enjoy the game, but warns that racist chanting will not be accepted.

Supt Mark Holland, the match commander, said: “When these two teams have met previously there has been a small minority of people who have started or joined in with racist chants. Alongside the clubs we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to this type of verbal abuse and we will be taking positive action to identify anyone who is involved. We want everyone to enjoy the game for what it is – two teams competing to improve their chances of gaining promotion.

“Nationwide the Football Association is determined to kick out racism and it is simply not acceptable in any form. Both clubs fully back this zero-tolerance approach and Nottingham Forest also host an antisocial behaviour text service that allows people to report any such behaviour.

“This is a big game for both clubs and we want supporters to enjoy the match without being offensive to others with chants which are likely to cause offence.”

Nottingham Forest media and communications manager Ben White fully endorsed the message. He said: “The club will not tolerate this kind of antisocial behaviour at The City Ground and will take the strongest possible action against anyone who is involved in such behaviour.

“We are active in our efforts to remove this type of abuse from our matches and we will not condone any form of chant that may be perceived as racist or offensive, aimed towards our own or the visiting supporters.

“We would like to work with supporters to provide the most enjoyable matchday experience we can and fully encourage them to use our ‘text reporting facility’ in order to report any behaviour that they feel is offensive.”

A spokesman for Leicester City said: “There is no place for any form of discrimination in football or in wider society and Leicester City wholly supports the efforts of Nottinghamshire Police to encourage an atmosphere that is inclusive for all. Players and supporters have the right to participate in a matchday that is free from prejudice and we would urge supporters to report any activity which compromises this to the police.”

Details of the Nottingham Forest text reporting facility can be found on each match ticket or in the matchday programme.

Surprised this needed putting on our site but fair enough.

To make it look like they're not targeting anyone in particular but we all know were the problem lies.

Pretty much, yes.

Forest remains one of only four grounds I've heard racist chanting en masse whilst watching Leicester. The others are Bristol Rovers, Bristol City and Millwall if you're interested.

Obviously Forest have a bigger problem with racism than us, but the police need to show they aren't singling anybody out.

Atleast weren't owned by the pakis!!!!

Why did I read that and think "Uh oh, someone is in sh1t now" but then I read the posters name and think "Oh Ok, maybe that's OK then"

It's a bit like black guys using the N word when the white guys get lamented for it.

Does it really make it OK?

Raj, Are you Indian or Pakistani? (If at all either)

If you are Pakistani then is it really OK to use that word to describe fellow countrymen?

If you are Indian, Tamil or Bangladeshi etc, Well, I guess that's just racist.

No, it doesn't. I've spent my entire adult life - which dates back to the 1950s - arguing against prejudice of any kind, and by any perpetrator. Just because someone has a black or brown skin doesn't give them the right to use racist epithets. Cut any of us and we bleed: whether we're black, brown, white, male, female, gay, 'straight', young or old.

Racism is racism, no matter who is using the words. End. Of.

Is it wrong that the I got more offended by the bad spelling, grammar, word-division and inappropriate use of the apostrophe? Not sure what he is trying to say  but it must be important as there are four exclamation marks!

You must spend a lot of time being offended if you're a regular forum viewer...

Just out of curiosity what is the punishment?

Like, say a steward pulls an individual aside for hearing racist chanting from an entire block

Then what? Is he referred to the police where he will deny it and they have no proof so nothing will happen?

I do not agree with racism in any way shape or form, but if its applied en mass then how can you prove an individual is guilty without having each member of the crowd filmed for the whole 90 minutes? Because he/she will just deny they were involved & were sitting there innocently.

Genuinely interested in the process of convicting them if anyone can shed any light on it.
