How Naff is the Leicester Mercury?

Recommended Posts

Have returned back to Leicester to visit family and a trip to the game this Saturday. Just read the report from the game last night in the Mercury. Have not read the Mercury for probably 20 years, well what a poor report, I think I could have written the same from the radio commentary. Not a quote from NP or any of the other management or a player either, is Rob Tanner on worse terms with NP than Stringer?? Is this normal for this guy?

Posted

lol

Yeah, he's every bit as bad as Stringer.

I know 100% that I could do a better job and don't get me started on his 'blog' that he writes every week. In one of his recent ones he classed Coventry City as an East Midlands team.

I like Tanner as a bloke but his writing is dreadful but unfortunately the Mercury is a dying paper and absolutely skint. Circulation is very low now so paying for high quality journalism isn't going to happen.

The way they were up Mandaric's arse was staggering as well, never forget it when they asked no questions regarding Pearson's first departure and instead bombarded us with news about Paulo Sousa and his sexy Champions League medals that in reality meant fcuk all.

I even remember a two page spread claiming that his assistant taught Mourinho everything he knows.

If you have a combination of not asking difficult questions because you want to keep people onside and you keep bullshitting people eventually your rag will die and that's exactly what will happen. I have no idea why anyone would buy it anymore.

Be another 20 years before I buy it again.

I can tell you for a fact their circulation is fine, not great but by no means small either, Bill Anderson was shit, Tanner is better than him but not much cop either

It is pretty poor and I'm sure I could do as good a job as Tanner et al do.

To be honest I don't know why people even bother with national newspapers anymore, let alone their local rag. Most papers have all of their stories online for free so why would you pay for a smaller less convenient version?

Where do you get that their circulation is very low? I don't believe that's at all true?

Are you making that up?

All I can get is the EDP (Eastern Daily Press)

You think the Mockery reporting is bad all we get is reports on some fvcking Budgie team that play in yellow n green or something.

They never even mention the city how shite is that for reporting.

And they claim to have a sports section lol lol lol

I suppose declining would be more accurate than low.

It's was aa bit over 40,000 in 2012 which was down from about 75,000 just 4-5 years before. In it's heyday it sold nearly 150,000.

Not sure of the exact figure now but it will obviously be lower than '12, the readership is literally dying out.

I don't know anyone under 50 who buys it.

I did today, I read the report in the back page: thought "well that was shit". Turned the page, and there seemed to be what can only be described as another match report but worse. I chucked it in the skip.

PEARSON: WE ARE ALREADY CHAMPIONS

Nigel Pearson quotes: "We are not getting carried away, there is a long way to go and we are not getting complacent".

Is a possible newspaper story.

I read it a few weeks ago on the end of a bar, it was criminally bad. I know for 25p or whatever it is now you shouldn't expect much, but it was about on the same level as a Bradgate Mail.

No wonder they have to charge a shitload for death notices.

Well is anyone surprised that the reports on City are shit? The Mercury has been printed in Derby for the  past 2 to 3 years or more.

It used to be a really good paper when it was printed in Leicester.

There was a early morning edition, afternoon edition & a final edition which got to the shops around 5 to 6 pm

Now all you get is the day before news.

Bring back Hans Christian Anderson, at least you could have a laugh when reading his match reports because he went to a different game to everyone else!

The guy hated City I'm sure!

Do any of you older guys

We had 45000 copies of the mercury this morning, more than any other publication

Newspaper sales declining .... Not really surprising given the plethora of alternative media sources invented in the last 20 years ....

Surely if you're going to properly talk about how influential their journalism is and what reach it has you've got to take into account the ThisIsLeicestershire reach too??

Or does this ruin a good old over reaction?

I buy it occasionally after a good win, only so I can keep a collection. It will be nice reading some of the back pages in 20 years time.

Over the last 20 years of course, even the last 10, the impact of rolling news channels probably killed them, but the decline isn't as great as people like to think over the last few years, certainly not to the 75-80% decline the Merc has suffered over that time since 2008.

in fact the Times and I's circulation actually improved from 2012 to 2013, two papers who generally get it right with what people want (good reporting, columnists, excellent coverage with a different angle that the news often gives).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_newspapers_in_the_United_Kingdom_by_circulation

I don't like judging circulation by websites, anyone can click on it, the Mail website gets something like 100million+ hits a day but that can't be counted as circulation.

Worst part of the Mercury is the fact that they keep writing repetitive articles about us at the moment, as there cannot be much happening at the moment e.g. "James vows we won't mess up is time", "Morgan states we have the quality to go up" - they just seem to go through every player saying the same thing each day...
