My laptop is getting pretty sluggish. It's running Windows 7, is four years old and I've tried to be careful about not installing crap on it.

I reckon my best bet might have to be a complete reinstallation of Windows and formatting of the HDD.

Is this a good move or is there something else I should be trying first? Obviously it's virus free and I keep track of running processes etc. I'm convinced it's Windows' file system that's crippling it.

Is a reformat easy to do?

Formatting would be about the best thing you can do, especially if it hasn't been done in all the time you've had it. You'll need a copy of windows on disk or flash drive. If you've got any mates that know what they're doing then get them to show you if pos. It's pretty simple but if you've not done it before it'll probably be slightly confusing.

Just make sure you back up any importand files/docs, media, game saves etc on another usb/hdd first.

There's also a cracking little website called www.ninite.com that lets you choose which programs you want to download then it goes and installs all the latest versions automatically so you don't have to go through installing everything manually.

Cracking, thanks for the advice mate.

My old laptop is knackered, took it in to a PC shop in town and they said they can't fix it. I can't get the laptop to turn on.

Now is there anyway at all of getting all my data, songs, FM saved games ect transferred off my broken laptop to a new one? And if so how much roughly do you think it will set me back?

Thanks.

How would I be able to do that then if I can't turn on the laptop?

Unscrew the back and take out the hard drive. Then plug the hard drive into a caddy that you access from a different machine.

Or if it isn't possible to do that for you, do the above but take the hard drive to a PC shop and ask them to recover the data from it.

Any Photoshop gurus? Well, GIMP actually, but nevermind.

I'm trying to cut out an image from a white background. I've used colour to alpha to makenthe background transparent, but it reverts all the white elements in the image itself to alpha too, making it translucent and shitty.

Tried erasing the background manually to alpha but it never completely goes. Tried using the firm-edged eraser but it makes everything look weird with jagged edges.

Any tips to help me avoid having to cut the ruddy thing out, which I hate doing?

Let me start by saying I've got absolutely no idea. However, an idea.

Could you cut round the image that you want, make it a layer in its own right. Then put it on top of a completely white layer, and just make that white layer transparent?

Two problems with adverts.

1. I don't know if this is happening to everyone on here but I'm getting these pop up ads from the side that can be put to one side but will come straight back out once I click on another page, this is only happening on Foxestalk - I have AdBlock as well;

2. The other is something happening on nearly all sites I use (although not Facebook/Twitter), why are these words appearing as links? I hover over them and it's some advert, why is this happening? It's doing my head in;

Help appreciated, cheers.

Check your extensions on chrome, you might have accidentally installed something. Could be adware as well.

You've got adware on your computer. Run Hitman Pro or MalwareBytes to clear it up.

I upgraded to windows 8.1 the other month and since then my computer has been freezing up and requiring me to restart it manually, with no seeming rhyme or reason.

I've checked my drivers and they're all up to date, and I've checked my event logs and there don't seem to be any errors around the time of freezing, so I can't work out what is causing this...

I haven't, no.

No restore point? I'm pretty sure that anytime Win 7 installs upgrades it creates a restore point. Try typing that in the Window help directory and see what comes up with.

It is, a friend of mine has got it. I knew how bad it was in theory but not how really really bad it is. I was running WinXP but of course that it now unsupported, so I made the switch to Mint Linux which has been superb. (Doesn't cost me anything either). goodbye Microsoft

Anyone know of any (preferably free) software I can use to find the product key of my laptop? There is a sticker underneath that has been worn to nothingness and I want to reinstall windows :(
