The Development Squad and the Premier League

Firstly looking at the retained list published by the club a few weeks ago, do we know if any of the academy players have extended their contracts?

"The Club will/have offered contracts to the following Development Squad players" but we haven't heard anything since.

Tom Hopper
Kieran Kennedy
Ryan Watson
Adam Dawson
Jak McCourt
Marcel Barrington
Jacob Blyth
Michael Cain
Harry Panayiotou
James Pearson
Alie Sesay
Adam Smith

There's some decent young players in that list and I'd be disappointed if we didn't keep hold of the likes of Tom Hopper, Michael Cain and Adam Smith.

Adam Dawson and Jacob Blyth are now 21, so you feel this season is make or break for them, at 21 you've got to be in or around the first team squad whether it's here or at another club on loan.

Secondly with us now in the Premier League, what role do you see the development squad players playing next season?

As much as Pearson would like to, unfortunately I don't see any breaking through to the first team next season, purely because of the level we're now playing at. It takes an awful amount of trust to throw a 19/20 year old with little experience into a Premier League match.

I can see 2/3 going out on loan to Lg1, Lg2 and Conf clubs which I think is the only way a young player is going to break into our first team.

You look at Jeff Schlupp and the successful spell he had at Brentford (as a striker), he came back a much better player because of the first team experience he gained and now he's going to Brazil (as a LB)!

Then there's Liam Moore, who had loan spells at Bradford and Brentford, again came back a much better player and now looks like he has the potential to become a top centre back.

It annoys me when you get people saying Pearson doesn't give youth a chance, why should he if they're not good enough?

The average age of our squad was exceptionally low, he signed James, Drinkwater, Knockaert etc. who could all be considered 'youth' when signed.

There's a few that seem to suggest players from our youth academy don't get a fair crack of the whip which is absurd looking at Moore and Schlupp's involvement in the first team.

Well you'd expect Blyth (if he does go out on loan) to join a league 1 or championship team, seeing as he already proved hes good enough for league 2 with Northampton.

Pearson will give youth a chance if he thinks they are good enough, not just in terms of play but as they are as people also. He's shown it time and again, the sad fact is we just aren't producing quality.

We're producing a high quantity of players who will have careers in the league, but I'm not sure we're going to have any more breakthroughs for a while as nobody has had a sniff.

Exactly.

I think our problem is typical of English academies in the sense that our academy seems to be more bothered about winning rather than developing players so taller, fast and strong players are signed.

We have some decent youngsters coming through below the Under 21 age group isn't this Layton Ndukwu highly rated?

Isn't he a bit too young for the u21's?

I don't think there are many better managers than Pearson at giving youth a chance. I just think the pressures of teams in the Premier League effectively puts an end to a U21 player's hopes of breaking into the first team squad unless they're an exceptional talent (ie Luke Shaw, Ross Barkley). I just hope a couple of the players can go and have a successful loan spell at a lower league club and come back better players and pushing to break into the first team squad.

From the OS it listed Hopper as a senior player, so I imagine him trying to break into the first team this season.

Blyth should have a year on loan at the championship, out of any youth player I think he's going to be the next 'name' to break through and make a difference.

From this list I'd like to see Cain, Blythe and Sesay given a shot at some point.

Tom Hopper has just signed a two year deal, big season next season whether it's with us or out on loan at another club.

I doubt any of the Dev Squad will get a chance in the PL next season. What they need to do is get out on loan and rip the lower leagues up. As mentioned above, Schlupp and Moore did that and look at them now. Others need to follow suit if they want to step up to our 1st team.

Hopper will get a chance if he can get 100% fit

Highly thought of and outside chance that he will feature more than GTF

He's done well to get a 2 year contract as I'm not convinced, he was poor vs Derby last season and his record at Bury was poor. Pearson seemed to use him more at CB than up front last pre season, doesn't suggest alot of confidence.

Getting a 2 year deal doesn't suggest a lot of confidence in the kid ?!?

Don't give a fvck if you are convinced or not because the people who matter quite clearly are

I think Tom Hopper & James Pearson will both feature regular for the 1st team next year , the future is bright

If you think James Pearson will feature regularly next season, you are off your head.

No chance will James Pearson future regularly next year. He really struggled at Carlisle at the end of this season and only played 3 matches before being sent back. He's nowhere near the level that's needed for the Premier League and will play in the U21 league rather than anything else.

Hopper, on the other hand, is an interesting one. Pearson obviously has faith in him with him being in the 18 man squad quite a bit at the start of the season and him starting against Derby but it'll be interesting to see how he comes back from his injury. I think he might get a couple of chances in the FA Cup and League Cup and he'll have to take those chances with both hands to force his way into the picture regarding Premier League football. Could possibly see him being sent out on loan to somewhere like Doncaster or Leyton Orient in League One. Maybe even a low Championship team like Blackpool.

But Liam was 18-20 when he went on loan and ready to come into the first team at 21 so isn't it a bit late for those that are now 20 to be going on loan with a view to becoming first teamers at LCFC

Isn't this just George Taft being bitter?!

Jacob Blyth and James Pearson have both just signed new deals today. So that's Hopper, Blyth and Pearson. Looks like some of these younger lads are starting to put pen to paper this week. I should imagine with the category 1 status attained and the successful u/21s premier league season almost all of these will sign on and most will go out on loan for 3 monthly intervals within next season.
