Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Europe win 3 consecutive World Cups (Italy 2006, Spain 2010 and Germany 2014) for the first time. First time a European team has won the World Cup in South America. First time one continent has been 2 wins ahead of the other continent.
Bryn Posted 13 July 2014 Posted 13 July 2014 Not really surprising when you consider the respective wealth.
m4DD0gg Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Hmm also there are over 50 countries in Europe and about 15 in South America, i have not included North and Central as lets be honest its never going to happen.
bovril Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Ridiculous thread, from a ridiculous person. Why? Quite interesting stats....
DennisNedry Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Hmm also there are over 50 countries in Europe and about 15 in South America, i have not included North and Central as lets be honest its never going to happen. Europe is 3,837,000 Sq. Miles South America is 6,880,000 Sq. Miles Also, more countries means great players spread out over many teams.
Fox92 Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Doesn't mean the Continent is better. It's not a great comparison. The wealth nowadays is ridiculous in Europe.
James. Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Europe is 3,837,000 Sq. Miles South America is 6,880,000 Sq. Miles Out of interest why and how is that relevant?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 South America - population 385,000,000 Europe - population 742,000,000 Both approximations, but nearly twice as many people in Europe, plus I doubt theres any jungle tribes who've never seen a football in Europe.
Manwell Pablo Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Yes not really a comparison worth making we've more people more countries more funding and more large countries capable of mounting a serious challenge (Germany Spain France Italy.....and if we ever sort ourselves we're capable of giving teams a game) and as I've already pointed out, we take over twice as many teams to a World Cup than anyone else, (and I maintain while we can't get half of them out of the group stage and the South Americans and even North Americans can take 75% through we should be knocked down to twelve) so we've always got a better chance of winning by the laws of averages. South America take 5, took 4 through the group stages, Brazil knocked out Chile and Colombia....what's left? The big two, and it's ok the whole of Europe taking credit for this victory over South America, really is all down to Ze Germans, who were the only European side to actually put a South American side out of the tournament in a knockout game.
Grandad. Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Why? Quite interesting stats.... They aren't interesting at all. Do you really care that European nations have won the last three World Cups? I don't, I only care that in them three World Cups England have gone out at the 1/4 finals, the second round and the group stage in them last three. Will I boast that a European side (which aren't England) won the World Cup? No, they aren't my nation. When has anyone ever discussed who are the better continents at football, we don't compete with South America. At the end of the day, the best country should win the World Cup and they should be the one's to celebrate the success, not the continent.

It's just a discussion, stop getting your knickers bunched yet again. It is interesting that the last 3 have been won by European nations, previously Brazil and Argentina have been very successful in the world cup. People that enjoy football often take an interest in football, it's not that crazy.

I'm not getting like anything, if you can't see the reason why POTM started this thread then you are very blinded mate. He has been banging on about this kind of rubbish for a long time. The US football thread.

Fair enough, I usually just casually browse most threads and don't always make a mental note of who said what. It's subjective anyway, it's not up to you to say what's 'interesting' and what's not.
MooseBreath Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Doesn't mean the Continent is better. It's not a great comparison. The wealth nowadays is ridiculous in Europe. In what sense? In national economic terms the gap between the likes of Argentina/Brazil and Spain/Italy has narrowed considerably in recent decades. If you mean the football economy then yes, but that also benefits the many south American playing in Europe, and wealth alone doesn't make footballers that much better. If it did then it would be dominated by the upper classes instead of players being predominantly working class as they are now.

Guest MattP Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Pretty impressive record for South America given they have only held the competition a handful of times there.
Haydos Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 he hasn't but ok. He's just written 3 stats. I'm not saying he's not looking for another argument, just that there's some discussion to be had there. Brazil's next manager will be an important decision. As will Spain's hangover from this.
James. Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Pretty impressive record for South America given they have only held the competition a handful of times there. That's what I was thinking. On a relative basis if you consider resources, population, etc South American countries are definitely outperforming Europe. The reasons behind that would be very interesting and no doubt complex and diverse. One factor could be how football is used as a way out of poverty to a much larger extent in South America compared to Europe (and as such there is a passion and motivation that drives people to be the best more so than those brought up amongst the relative comforts of our continent). I have no evidence to back that up but when you hear the backgrounds of some of the South American players it wouldn't surprise me if it was the case.
Nalis Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Its all cyclical really isnt it? Brazil and Argentina's time will come again.

If it did then it would be dominated by the upper classes instead of players being predominantly working class as they are now. I meant in football terms. Look at how many players over there now play in European leagues, compared to previous years. It's no wonder in Brazil they feel drifted apart from the players.
Manwell Pablo Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 Hang on, what about Russia? Think you can only technically count the area of Russia in Europe. If we're going to start arguing over who should be better at football because one continent has a bigger uninhabited Siberian desert than the others uninhabited Jungle/Rainforest I think we're getting a little besides the point don't you think?
Stadt Posted 14 July 2014 Posted 14 July 2014 I think Dennis Nedry's point was that the number if countries is just as irrelevant as the land mass.
