davieG Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Gary Lineker Comments (1)Two former Leicester City stars have been selected in an all-time England five-a-side team. Striker Gary Lineker and goalkeeper Gordon Banks have been chosen in the line-up by fans on the BBC Five Live football phone-in 606. Lineker, 53, and Banks, 76, have been picked alongside former West ham captain Bobby Moore and Manchester United heroes Bobby Charlton and Paul Scholes. Linker and football fans and celebrities took to Twitter to discuss the team selection. Match of the Day presenter Lineker tweeted: “I must confess though, I was a useless 5-a-side player. Goals were too small.” Comedian David Baddiel, one half of the cult TV show the Fantasy Football League Show with fellow comic Frank Skinner, teased Lineker about him being picked. He tweeted to Linker: “I suspect not-above-head-height rule worked in your favour here...” Lineker conceded that was a good point and tweeted: “You’ll be telling me, I have to defend next.” JamesManktelow posted: “Gazza over Scholes any day of the week.” Jonathan Wilson tweeted: “Number of Scholesys cautions will be balanced out with Mr Lineker's #nevercautioned. Poachers dream that team.” Lineker was never booked throughout his professional career. He was never cautioned by a referee during his 16-year senior career, in which he played 567 competitive games. He was awarded the FA Fair Play Award in 1990 due to his sportsmanship on the pitch. Lineker scored 282 club goals and 49 international goals. Banks made 628 appearances during a 15-year career in the Football League and won 73 caps for his country. He lifted the World Cup for England in 1966 with team mate Bobby Charlton and captain Bobby Moore. Who would you select for your all-time England five-a-side team? Chug Laguna Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Bobby Moore at the back would be awful... would play a bit stiff
Fox92 Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Can't argue with it really. Lineker produced at International level, backed up by his record for England including top goalscorer at a World Cup, while Banks remains of the greatest goalkeepers ever. We should really have a statue of those two.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 I hate articles that reference the everyman on Twitter more than I should: @Gav96 tweeted "wot no Becks?! games gone haha" I don't give a shit what Gav thinks.
Jordan Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Lineker has said a few times that he's awful in 5 a side! I'd take Gazza over Scholes all day. Hell, if Gazza didn't have such awful alcohol and health issues, he could still be a good 5-a-side player I'd go Banks, Moore, Gazza, Hoddle, and... Well, I would never say no if I were offered Lineker, but I think Rooney would be pretty good...
Freesolo Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Scholes was Englands most unappreciated Midfielder IMO the guy was awesome and apart from his tackling he had everything, He is a players players respected across the whole of Europe by his peers like Zidane and Xavi etc. Gazza never really won anything, he was a good player with flashes of brilliance but thats about it
The Blur Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 What people are missing is that 5 a side game place more emphasis on dribbling, tricks and quick passing so I feel that Gazza is more suited to the formation than Scholesy and same could be applied to Rooney over Lineker and Hoddle over Charlton etc.
Raw Dykes Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Gazza>Scholes That's true a million times out of a million. How the fvck did Scholes get in ahead of Gazza? Takes the shine off getting in that team a bit.
Guest bss9401 Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 I agree with the Gazza argument replacing scholes. Any top 5 a side team needs the most agile keeper and a lightning finisher so I proudly agree with Banks and Lineker's inclusion. To go with Charlton's quality, energy and ability to finish you would need real trickery so the other place would be for someone like Gazza, Barnes or Beardsley. No argument with the great Bobby Moore at the back.

Much like Lampard and Gerrard, Scholes often flattered to deceive for England. He was a consistantly dependable player at club level for ManUtd, no doubt, but for England Gascoigne was many, many times better. The teams of 1990 and 1996 - the only two England sides to reach the last 4 of a tournament in the past 46 years were both built around Gascoigne's flair and genius and both those England teams completely played through him.
lc4lcfc Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 We don't produce many but goes to show the ones we do produce are quality

He just didn't really do it for England. For a range of reasons, not least that he was forced out left so Lampard nd Gerrard could play together. For this reason he didn;t show his true self for england and therfore shouldn;t even be in contention. Couldn't disagree more. Much like Lampard and Gerrard, Scholes often flattered to deceive for England. Guest Posted 10 September 2014 Posted 10 September 2014 Gazza in his prime pisses over scholes this is just stupid. they were completely different players. gazza's prime lasted about 5 minutes. Italia 90 was followed by injury, a brilliant but very short lived time in italy then a downhill spiral. euro 96 and a couple of years playing against journeymen in scotland gave him a second wind. talent in abundance and that personality that really made the difference in winning over the public. Scholes was perfect at what he did. didn;t do it for england but absolutely wonderful player. it's gazza as mr 100/100 for a total of about 1 year against scholes mr 98% for 15 solid years.
Oxfordfox83 Posted 10 September 2014 Posted 10 September 2014 Gazza in his prime pisses over scholes Scholes was a sensational player, but you take both at their peak and Gazza is one of the world's best ever. Having said that, I'd have them both in the team. Can't see why Charlton's in there-I don't think his undoubted qualities are particularly relevant to 5aside.
