Fosse park to be expanded?

Up to 700 jobs are set to be created at a new shopping centre next to Fosse Park.

Between 20 and 30 stores could set up on land currently occupied by Everards Brewery, near Braunstone.

This would include a new 90,000 sq ft Next store selling fashion, homeware and gardening equipment.

Under the plan, Everards would relocate its brewery, where it currently employs about 100 people, to a smaller site nearby.

Next will close its two stores at Fosse Park after creating the three-storey superstore on the neighbouring 13-acre site, known as Castle Acres.

The Enderby-based fashion group said about 500 staff would relocate from the two stores in Fosse Park, with up to 100 new jobs being created.

The other 600 new jobs would be created by other retailers setting up at the new site.

Lord Simon Wolfson, Next chief executive, said: “Fosse Park is one of the top 10 out-of-town locations in Britain. We’re very enthusiastic about this development.”

Lord Wolfson said the eye-catching design of the new store would provide a “stunning new architectural gateway development” for Leicester.

Everards, known for its Tiger and Beacon beers, plans to relocate its brewery to Soar Valley Way, close to Leicestershire Police’s Enderby headquarters, where it hopes to create an 11-acre business park occupied by other food and drink manufacturers.

Planning applications for both the Castle Acres and Soar Valley Way developments are due to be submitted to Blaby District Council in the first half of 2015. If given the go ahead, the sites should be open by the end of 2017.

Everards would then sell Castle Acres, close to junction 21 of the M1, to a new owner for tens of millions of pounds.

In August, Fosse Park, which has 40 stores and attracts eight million visitors a year, was jointly bought by the Crown Estate property business and Chinese government for £345.5 million from northern Irish business Foyleside.

Lord Wolfson said the Next Home and Garden store would be similar to one recently opened in Hedge End, near Southampton. The group also operates five other home and garden outlets, as well as more than 500 smaller fashion stores.

Richard Everard, chairman of Everards Brewery, said: “It is immensely exciting to be working alongside the excellent team at Next to promote our existing Castle Acres site for retail development – investing in our local economy and creating so many new jobs.”

Now all they need to do is invest in the transport infrastructure to deal with the bucketload of extra traffic that'll inevitably come as a result. The Fosse Park roundabout is already unfit for purpose and is always one breakdown/accident from total meltdown.

Actually this is a very good point. You do have to remember that there is to be a development of 4250 homes at Lubbesthorpe which will also impact on this junction....

Good news for me personally. I live just nearby fosse park. The traffic could get even worse though along the Soar Valley way!

Expansion of one of the dullest places on earth.

Visit Fosse Park, buy the same bed, sofa, clothes etc as everybody else.

Why anyone gets any enjoyment in just following the herd to the God forsaken place is beyond me.

I have even seen people queuing to get in.

It is a great shame but then you only have to look at the prices they charge to understand why. Shopping in fosse park is practical, that is about the nicest thing I can say.

Plans for fashion retailer Primark to take over the BHS store at Fosse Park have been approved.

Blaby District Council’s planning committee’s support for the proposal was unanimous at yesterday's meeting.

They voted in favour of the scheme, which will also see the store expanded, despite warnings that expansion of the retail park will threaten the “vitality and viability of shopping areas in Leicester city centre.

Senior city council officials had said the gradual expansion of the Fosse Park shopping complex would have a cumulative impact on shopping centres such as Highcross.
