ADK Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 I don't really know why voter turn out is so low, absolutely everyone in my family votes and every single one of my friends votes.
Captain... Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 No I don't think gun point, but then I wouldnt rule it out. Who knows that's the point. As has been pointed out that is no greater risk than postal votes and the coordination needed to have a significant impact on voting would be ridiculous.
Strokes Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 As has been pointed out that is no greater risk than postal votes and the coordination needed to have a significant impact on voting would be ridiculous.I don't agree with postal voting but its not as big a risk. The take up on digital would make booths redundant and therefore create a huge risk imo
ADK Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 I don't see how digital could work. Even if it did, it would probably end up costing £Billions and if the only motivation is people not being bothered to walk a few hundred metres to a polling booth I'm not sure I would be in favour.
marbelladave Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 I don't get this. Trying to get as many idiots to vote as possible is what has got us into the mess we are in. I would make people earn the right to vote, ie anyone can do it but you have to make the effort and do something worthwhile for 'society' in order to obtain the status of actually having a vote. Something earned is always far more valuable than something given for free, if you have made the effort, you are more likely to actually exercise your vote with a little thought.
Strokes Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 Let me make it clear, I'm not against this because I want to deny people voting, I wish everyone would vote. Low turnout really sadderns me. Getting people to the booths is the best way.
Rincewind Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 The bedridden cannot get to the booths or those in hospitals and as for digital not everyone can afford Iphones own PC's or competent with them.
MooseBreath Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 A few real problems in this country would soon get people voting. That people feel comfortable with apathy should probably be celebrated rather that a cause of concern.

Even if it did, it would probably end up costing £Billions and if the only motivation is people not being bothered to walk a few hundred metres to a polling booth I'm not sure I would be in favour. There are many benefits, the clearest one being speed of counting and checking, no need to man polling booths and spend thousands of man hours counting votes. It would also remove the risk of unreadable ballots, incorrectly filled in ballots and any risk of ballots being lost. It is not just people walking 100 metres, some people can't walk 100 metres, some people live in remote places, get ill, have to work, it is not just laziness. Think about the possibilities, you could have a whole host of information at your finger tips when you vote, you could see their voting records in parliament, their personal view points and opinions all at the touch of a button it would encourage informed decision making rather than entrenched party lead views and lazy voting based on party with zero knowledge of candidates. After voting there would be instant statistics based on all kinds of demographics we could have live updates and constituencies declared as soon as they reach 50%. The cost of an election is already pretty high and obviously there should be a cost benefit analysis before any project is undertaken. Really it shouldn't cost anything like that amount but knowing how the government fvcks up every project it embarks and they go wildly over budget it wouldn't surprise me. When it comes to falsifying the data and illegal voting it would be so much easier to analyse digital data and spot erroneous voting patterns than it currently is with paper ballots.
Rincewind Posted 12 December 2014 Posted 12 December 2014 There are plenty of problems but people do not feel any party is any better than the other.

Maybe if all the idiots voted then the government would spend more time ensuring there were less idiots in the country and more educated people capable of making informed decisions. Rather than celebrity obsessed vapid morons who are more concerned with their appearance than the state of the nation.

That's a nice ideal and perhaps sometime in the future it will happen. Not yet though.

Rather than celebrity obsessed vapid morons who are more concerned with their appearance than the state of the nation. You can't force someone to be interested in something. Anyway the problem of people not voting runs deeper than them not being bothered to go to the polls
MooseBreath Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 There are plenty of problems but people do not feel any party is any better than the other.Name one problem we have in this country that none of the current parties are proposing to tackle. I'll open that one out to everyone because I can't think of any. Even fake problems like the need for tree hugging are dealt with by someone.
Captain... Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 That's a nice ideal and perhaps sometime in the future it will happen. Not yet though. Oh I know it won't happen for this election but should certainly be something to aim for rather than be scared of.
lavrentis Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 so which party is going to reduce rent in London?
Jon the Hat Posted 13 December 2014 Author Posted 13 December 2014 so which party is going to reduce rent in London? Boris is building lots of homes.
lavrentis Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 Boris is building lots of homes. tory it is then
Jon the Hat Posted 13 December 2014 Author Posted 13 December 2014 There are plenty of problems but people do not feel any party is any better than the other. Then they are not paying attention Ken.
Guest MattP Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 There are plenty of problems but people do not feel any party is any better than the other. Who is people? The fact the vast majority of people still turn out to vote on the day of the General Election kind of makes your point impotent.
leicsmac Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 Apathy is a big problem because it means that demographics that do get out and vote tend to have more policies in their favour than ones that don't. But that's solely the fault of people that choose either not to vote or spoil their paper. Like has been said, there's a party with policies for everyone out there.
Guest MattP Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 Absolutely. As has been said some people just like to moan or are downright idle. I'm sick of hearing the 'they are all the same' 'they don't care about us' 'I don't even know who my MP is' morons. If you don't bother to take any interest or put a bit of effort in they you won't get anything out of something.
leicsmac Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 That's right. Apathy changes nothing. That being said, as I have mentioned many times before I would really like to see some voting reform to allow representation to be a little bit better.
Webbo Posted 13 December 2014 Posted 13 December 2014 If the Tories won an election under electronic voting you can bet that some people would claim it was fixed. They'd blame the company that designed, built or installed the machines of being Tory billionaire doners who want to spite poor people.
