The Greens seem to have unrealistic expectations of what they can do, their mini manifesto just promises the earth ( :giggle: ) and makes out like they can pay for everything to be improved without taking a hit finanacially.

Posted

Why? Because they think it will get them elected, while satisfying the people who fund them through donations and who aid them with propaganda.

How? Through ever increasing immigration and a tax/benefits regime which favours the lowest and the highest earners while squeezing the middle.

So now the Tories are making the poor pay less tax and being criticised for it? lol

You can't make this shit up.

The middle have always been the ones to be squeezed because they are the biggest section and therefore yield the most and cost the most when favoured.

Lord Ashcroft (Tory) polls put Labour 4 points clear.

What's him being a Tory got to do with anything? Peter Kellner is a Labour party member.

Ammunition for some--

UK net migration rises to 298,000
_81253178_gettyimages_494596473.jpg

Net migration to the UK has risen to 298,000, according to the final set of quarterly figures before the general election.

The figure, for the year ending September 2014, is now well above the level of migration when David Cameron came to power in 2010.

The Conservatives had hoped to get it to below 100,000 by this May.

Net migration peaked at 320,000 in the year to June 2005. At the time of the 2010 election it was 252,000.

Net migration is the difference between the number of people who come to live in the UK for at least a year and the number who are leaving for at least a year.

'Very embarrassing'

The big increase in the latest set of figures was driven by a "statistically significant" rise in immigrants arriving in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Immigration was up to 624,000 in the year to September from 530,000 in the previous 12 months. About 327,000 people emigrated from the UK in the same period.

The BBC's Norman Smith said Mr Cameron's pledge to cut migration to the "tens of thousands" now "lies in tatters".

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, whose party opposed the net migration target, said the figures were "very embarrassing for the Conservatives".

"They made a huge fanfare about it and they were warned, warned by me and others privately don't do this it doesn't make any sense," the deputy prime minister told LBC radio.

"They've made a commitment and they have failed spectacularly to deliver it."

The Conservatives have previously blamed a rise in migration from within the EU and the restrictions of being in coalition with the Lib Dems for not achieving their target.

'Economic growth'

Experts at Oxford University's Migration Observatory said net migration from outside the EU has not been less than 100,000 at any time during this parliament, meaning the target would have been missed with or without any rise in EU migration.

Commenting on the latest figures, the Migration Observatory said: "The UK's success in stimulating economic growth and job creation appears to be a key factor in undermining efforts to reduce net migration."

A total of 271,000 people came to the UK for work-related reasons, according to the latest figures, up from 217,000 the previous year. Of those, 57% were EU citizens and 25% from outside the EU.

Of those moving to live in the UK for work-related reasons, 62% (167,000) came with a definite job to go to and 38% (104,000) came to look for work.

A total of 37,000 Romanian and Bulgarian citizens moved to the UK in the year, a "statistically significant" increase from 24,000 in the previous 12 months.

The figures suggest the biggest increase in net migration was from outside the EU. It was 190,000 in the year ending September 2014, up from 138,000 in the previous year. Net migration of EU citizens saw an increase to 162,000 from 130,000 the previous year.

It was a stupid thing for Cameron to promise whilst the country remains in the EU, you simly can't control immigration to a figure whilst you are within the freedom of movement act.

Although if they use it right it will certainly help their cause as it shows again just how well the economy is doing.

That's the main problem there, 104,000 people arriving into a country without a job. That's what has to be clamped down on.

The Tories couldn't even find one MP to defend this failure on the daily politics..empty chaired... Labour man could not  even give a ball park number on any limit..  we might as well not bother, the people of this country have no say... The EU rules ok...

It shows how well the economy is doing compared against nearly all eu countries. That is hardly much of an achievement though when you look at their failed systems.

Disgraceful they couldn't send a single person up really, it's a tough argument for Labour because despite Cameron missing the figures the last thing they want the election to be about is immigration given public trust in them on that.

Stephen Woolfe will be the next UKIP leader as well, everytime I see him he's superb, so well spoken and being mixed-race will be a massive bonus for him.

Oh no, we've got that pervert Peter Tatchell on now.

Why does this guy still get airtime? Can you even begin to imagine the stuff he has got upto.

So the mean old tories, now create a tax system that favours the lowest earners and you're upset because?

I think I've heard it all now.

Just for the record, in austerity, there will always be some class system getting squeezed. I'm pretty sure they all are, it just some more than others.

Tell me why the country is in a worse state now, than before the coalition came to power. (lets give the liberals some credit/flak)

As I admitted my alliegance earlier this thread, I can't let this one go Strokes. One of the best things this Government did was a Liberal policy. Cameron said it couldn't be done but we did it!

Also, very interested by Alf's story concerning Caroline Flint. Although you didn't win in your contest, glad you probably faired better than her chap - really cannot stand the woman.

Nick Clegg quote on LBC radio,  ...."we have no control, that's why it was a stupid  to make any pledge to get immigration down.". what a shameful surrender of our sovereignty..

(And I can say this being one of his voters); Nick - distance yourself from DC's pledges. The last time we got tied up to a pledge, it didn't end well for us...

What about the 25% that were non-EU citizens? Do we have no control over them?

It wasn't a liberal policy. They were promising all sorts that they had no intention of delivering. The Tories actually delivered the policy therefore it's a tory policy.

One of the reason's to vote Tory was on immigration!! They have let us down! The economy is better but if you have so many people coming in to the country and undercutting Brits on pay what chance do we have?

Sharp drop in UK business investment
_81255347_gettyimages_462133608.jpgAberdeen harbour, where falls in investment by oil companies are threatening jobs

Business investment in the UK has fallen for the second quarter in a row, recording the biggest fall since 2009.

Spending by business fell by 1.4% in the fourth quarter from the previous three-month period.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) which collects the data said falling oil prices may be to blame.

The oil price has fallen by over a half since June last year, and oil companies have pulled back on investment in the UK and around the world.

Oil impact

"Given the recent steep fall in oil prices, it might be expected that investment by the oil extraction industry might also fall, as oil production becomes less profitable," the ONS said.

Earlier this week the industry body Oil and Gas UK said that after reaching £14.8bn last year investment was forecast to fall to between £9.5bn and £11.3bn in 2015.

Economists have said overall business investment in Britain might also be affected by uncertainty over the outcome of Britain's national elections in May.

On an annual basis, investment still increased by 2.1% on the same period a year ago.

But it marks a sharp slow down from the middle of last year when business investment was growing at an annual rate of 11%.

The ONS also confirmed last month's estimates that the economy grew 0.5% in the last quarter of 2014.

It follows a 0.7% fall in the third quarter.

Yes it will be positive. It isn't good for North Sea oil, but that was drying up regardless and we are not a large oil producing economy.

This spat between the Mail and Anna Soubry MP has provided me with an unusually high level of entertainment as I have a mate who's a dyed in the wool Tory, AS is his MP and he's the Mail's biggest fan, so there's a danger his mind may explode.
