Benji Posted 17 February 2015 Posted 17 February 2015 A UKIP General Election candidate has agreed to pay £1,000 to charity after making false accusations against Harborough MP Sir Edward Garnier QC. Clive Langley alleged in a tweet that the former Solicitor General and prominent libel lawyer had made an improper claim for a “very expensive desk”. In a second tweet he alleged that Sir Edward may have made improper claims for staff expenses to the tune of £133,000 But Sir Edward said: “My office desk is not mine. It belongs to the House of Commons. The desk at home I inherited from my late mother-in-law. He said the staffing expenses had been authorised and could be seen on line. He told Mr Langley in a letter: “Both allegations are false and calculated to sow suspicious about me in the minds of the publishees.” Mr Garnier, who has been the Tory member for Harborough since 1992, said he was alerted to the claims on Monday by the Labour candidate for Harborough Sundip Meghani. Mr Garnier said “After receiving an email from Sundip Meghani, I wrote to Clive Langley and he has unreservedly withdrawn the allegation and apologised. He has also agreed to my suggestion to donate £1,000 to Loros.” Sir Edward said: “Parliamentary expenses are open to scrutiny and Clive Langley has admitted making an expensive mistake.” Mr Langley, who is standing for UKIP in the Harborough constituency, received Sir Edward’s letter on Wednesday. Shortly afterwards Mr Langley tweeted: “I unreservedly apologise to Edward Garnier for making false and defamatory allegations about his expenses claims.” Mr Langley refused to discuss with the Leicester Mercury why he made the false allegations in the first place. Apologising to Mr Garnier in an email he wrote: “What I did was wrong and I have learnt a hard (and expensive) lesson.” Councillor Meghani said: “I received tweets from Mr Langley concerning Sir Edward’s expenses and I felt that it was only fair that Sir Edward was made aware of them. “I believe that Parliamentary candidates should act with decorum. If they have evidence of wrong-doing they should report it to the appropriate authorities.” Sir Edward, a Queen’s Counsel and an eminent libel lawyer, also sits as a Recorder in Crown Court. He was Solicitor General from May 2010 to September 2012. He was knighted after the reshuffle that ended his time as Solicitor General. Voll Blau Posted 17 February 2015 Posted 17 February 2015 Smart man - make allegations against a prominent libel lawyer. Think he posts on here? Not Garnier, the other fellow.
Guest MattP Posted 18 February 2015 Posted 18 February 2015 Has anyone been watching 'Inside the Commons' on BBC2? Fantastic series inside the Houses of Parliament and really gives a different look at it, I certainly look at the place through different eyes now. First thing you notice is how much most of them seem to really get along, Cameron and Miliband seem to laugh at each others joke and you can tell it's nothing personal, with MP's like Denis Skinner, Tom Watson and George Osborne you can tell it is, they hate what's across the bench from them and scowl even when the mood is jovial. Great bit where Carswell is about to return to the house and Gove comes up to shake his hand and congratulate him, sees the camera then out the corner of his eye and does a runner. Caroline Lucas and another MP whose name escaped me actually camped outside the offices overnight to get in line for a slot at a private members bill; it's first come first serve and that's the lengths some will go to. Whips need to be done away with though, I'd like to see everything done on an open vote, farcical scenes last night where it looked like a vote was going to be lost so everyone started calling their MP's back to vote, some of them with kids, some in dinner jackets, buses and taxis all laid on just to get them back in, ridiculous. If it's that important they should be there. Rincewind - You should have a watch of this as well as Jacob Rees Mogg (aka Lord Snooty to Ken) features heavily, he's an expert on parliamentary procedure and his office is open all day to anyone who wants some help with a bill, Labour MP's were even crossing the floor to ask his advice in one debate and he was happy to advise them and managed to defeat a Conservative bill because of it, he says that democracy and keeping to the principles of the house is more important than any party politics. Maybe you should think about that before deciding he should lose his job and seat because he has a posh voice. On the Iplayer if anyone wants a watch.

I think I'll be catching up with this when I get a chance. Things like this that give a better insight in to the real goings on and show them as real people (joking, shaking hands etc), is more likely to get the common voter interested in politics, than just the arguments or terminologies that most people won't understand. Jacob Rees Mogg is always great to listen too as well. The man knows his stuff and has a decent sense of humour, which most people will find as a shock, considering his upbringing and the way he sounds. I even remember him joking about how he sounds and what people must think of him. He certainly seems a top chap.

It's really great, one of the best shows I've ever seen covering politics and gives a real insight. This is a must watch for anyone interested in it. I think Jacob Rees Mogg is superb, some people just don't get him, he's actually being very self-depreciative when he speaks and even takes the piss out of himself as the self styled 'Minister for the 18th Century' - we need more like him in parliament, not less just because he talks posh. Anyone who can get floccinaucinihilipilification into a speech deserves some credit as well. Without meaning to sound biased as well the Tory backbenchers certainly seem more willing to take their leadership to task, the Eurosceptic MP's give Theresa May a real battering over the European Arrest Warrant.
RonnieTodger Posted 19 February 2015 Posted 19 February 2015 Has Leicesterpool started his Next Prime-Minister poll yet?- David Cameron- Ed Miliband- Nigel Farage- Nick Clegg - Iain Dowie
ousefox Posted 19 February 2015 Posted 19 February 2015 Thanks for that suggestion Matt - great watch. Pissed off the first one isn't available on iPlayer any more though
Merging Cultures Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Really enjoying 'Inside the Commons'. I used to want to be a Politician, this is making me want to revisit that idea.

Hilarious when he starts filibusting and goes on about "the rolling of a long summer's morning" or some absolute tosh during the private member's bill. It probably shouldn't be allowed, be funny all the same. He's incredibly pro-the system. His anger at TM during the European arrest warrant wasn't particularly because he disagreed with it, he was just appalled by what he saw as an abuse of process. Always good to have a couple of people like him around to keep everyone in order. Also that Labour front bencher who slept overnight for the remaining PMB slots really came across badly to me. He came across, or it was at least edited to make him look like such a smarmy snake in the grass. Love how he was introduced by being the coffee boy to his boss and her minions.
purpleronnie Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 So would Mr Farage enter into a Coalition for the Tories?. Firstly it was a No, they he said yes then No, and now I read that he would if the Tories agreed on certain proposals. Wouldn't surprise me even if the Tories didn't back down he would still enter a coalition. I'd be amazed if he said No, not because he seems to change his mind about it every few months but give any party a sniff at power they'll take it. I know one thing if it is a Tory/UKIP coalition I would lose all interest in politics.
Guest MattP Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 I thought Farage saud he'd only do a confidence and supply deal with anyone but he's open to that with any party that would offer a full referendum and commit 3billion more to the NHS? Where have you read him flip flopping?

He's a credit to parliament, I love how he visits the Hansard people after every single speech to check it's been recorded and in his own words... 'Its so much fun to see it flow so mellifluously'
Babylon Posted 20 February 2015 Posted 20 February 2015 Has Leicesterpool started his Next Prime-Minister poll yet? - David Cameron - Ed Miliband - Nigel Farage - Nick Clegg - Iain Dowie Surely Karl Robinson should be on there, he's always 10-1 for pretty much every job going.
Webbo Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 Anyone watching the Ukip programme on BBC2 now?
SMX11 Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 Anyone watching the Ukip programme on BBC2 now? Nope. What was it specifically about?

Nick Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 It's not just negro's - it's those 'negroid features' that really repulse her to even look at never mind sit near. Old white people in closet racist shocker.
Webbo Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 Nope. What was it specifically about? Ukip. specifically.
