If it was some one else, there may have been a shitstorm. Will Smith is the only black man Hollywood trusts to lead a blockbuster where the race of the protagonist isn't part of the plot.

Off the top of my head Wesley Snipes, Samuel L Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Jamie Foxx have all fronted at least one major Hollywood film which fits your description.

Instead of an estate in Scotland his parents could own a off license in Bradford. On a serious note he would be a great Bond, but it would be weird watching a character who is obviously white be portrayed by a black person. In the same way it would feel strange seeing a Chinese Othello or a Indian Robin Hood. It shows just how obsessed with race we are these days though, the thought of a black Santa or black Bond wouldn't even be thought of in a country not obsessed with skin colour.

If it is to be PC and some form of positive discrimination I would be dead against it. If they wanted a black actor for the sake of there being a black Bond then it would send the wrong message. If they are looking to replace Craig and draw up a list of available English actors and Elba is on the list alongside Danny Dyer, Hugh Grant, Jason Statham. It is clear who is the best Actor of the lot. Every new Bond actor is a reboot, he has been Scottish, Blond, Irish I would see no problem with Elba playing bond and would rather see him than an inferior actor as long as it wasn't pure tokenism and they didn't change him to a jive talking stereotype. If Casino Royale was played by a black Bond would it make any difference to the film?

I can see why it's always British actors (except one, shortly), it's a British Character, in a British franchise, in an American dominated market. I'd like the role to stay with British actors if they are good enough, just as I'd like bond to stay with white actors if they are good enough. If there are no decent British or Indeed white actors then I wouldn't have a problem with it. Like Captain said, If they want him to be black for the sake of being black I'm not for that. If he's the best man for the job, then ok.

Not really, as I said a lot of people would just find it weird an obviously white character was now a black man. It wouldn't change much to the difference of the film if Peter Griffin was changed to a black man in Family Guy; the movie but it's still find it weird watching a black character who I've seen my whole life being white or vice versa,

That's probably why I don't like the modern Bond films. Classic Bond is basically the stereotypical male fantasy. Lots of sexy women, casual sex, fast cars, guns, gadgets,alcohol, style. I don't buy the concept of "realism", neither incarnation is remotely plausible. The women is probably one of the most obvious areas where they've gone PC, they are so utterly desperate to subvert expectations that I don't think any of the recent female characters are remotely memorable which is ironic.
