bovril Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 And if thats the angle that is held widespread then it shouldnt be an issue at all. It all depends though like what Webbo said how much we hold fast to the books. The concept of an upper class Black person at Eaton College in the 30's might of been quite remote. I dont know numbers but in 2010 only one balck person was at Oxford university so its all pretty remote possibility eh?
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 Ibris Elba is an amazing actor but I think by the time Daniel Craig steps down as 007 Ibris will probably be too old. For me I think a couple of a good potential replacements would be Henry Cavill or Charlie Hunman. The idea of having a black james bond is not impossible but they would have to reboot the character again and change his background as such. Idris Elba could probably play Yoda and id watch. Great guy, great voice. **Ibris
Rincewind Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 M changed sex. How about Laura Croft being played by a man?
Finnegan Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 He went to Eton during the 30s in the books. I don't think there would have been many native British black men there at the time. A lot of the books are extremely racist as well so I doubt it's what Ian Flemming would have wanted. But clearly neither of the last two Bonds went to Eton in the 30s and unless the next reboot goes back to roots and is set in the sixties (which would admittedly be quite a good idea) then it's even more detached from that era. I'm assuming that MI6 agents in the current era (where infiltrating Africa and the middle east are as important, if not more so, than Caucasian Russia) come from a much more diverse background than those in the sixties and seventies.

You asked whether it said he was white in the books.
Finnegan Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 M changed sex? I didn't notice.. Just to confirm, you're being ironic right?
lavrentis Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 In all seriousness I have no problems with him being Bond
Finnegan Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 You asked whether it said he was white in the books. Exactly. I asked whether or not it stated he was white in the book. I didn't ask if it was contextually implied or Fleming felt it should be assumed. The latter is pretty obvious, I'm not disputing that. But unless Fleming specifically wrote that he was white and stated he could never be anything but, then I don't see the problem? (see points in my previous post.)
Rincewind Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 I have never understood why he tells the baddies his real name. He would be well known by now because he has single handedly shot, blown up thrown from high buildings or they have met with some other untimely ghastly death at his hands. Because of this the name Bond as another has suggested could just be a code name. They would have to mention this or hint the previous one had been retired either alive or dead.
Webbo Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 Why not just make films about a black spy? Seems like tokenism to me.
Rincewind Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 Why not just make films about a black spy? Seems like tokenism to me. Would be simpler.
Webbo Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 We could turn this on it's head, how about Christopher Biggins starring in a remake of Shaft?
Carl the Llama Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 Why not just make films about a black spy? Seems like tokenism to me. As long as he fits the part and they don't make him do anything cringeworthy like using a spear then I couldn't care less. Just give me a debonair suit saving the world via big explosions and basically magical gadgetry, then top it all off with a nice rack or two and I will call it a Bond film.
Sir Fynwy Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 Is James Bond still a thing? Last Bond film I watched was over 25 years ago, isn't it just for kids?
The Horse's Mouth Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 How much of Bond's character from the fleming novels have they even sticked to anyway?

Rincewind Posted 29 December 2014 Posted 29 December 2014 Never really been a fan of the films. Started watching one the other night. Was bored after a hour. Knew someone who was a big fan of the books but not the films. He said they were nothing like the books and ruined his character.
