Could James Bond be played by a black man?

Ibris Elba is an amazing actor but I think by the time Daniel Craig steps down as 007 Ibris will probably be too old. For me I think a couple of a good potential replacements would be Henry Cavill or Charlie Hunman. The idea of having a black james bond is not impossible but they would have to reboot the character again and change his background as such.

I'd go with either Tom Hardy or myself. If you're wondering then yes; I'm a good looking lad.

A black man can play James Bond when a white man can play Nelson Mandella.

Do the books state that Bond is white?

I'd have no issue with Bond being non-white as long as it was done because the best candidate was non-white and not in a desperate attempt to use race politics to "reinvigorate" the franchise.

If you have to be all faux-controversial and attention seeking just to publicise a film reboot then it's probably a series you should have left dead.

(This would apply to more than just Bond, see also Indiana Jones, Batman, Spiderman, you name it.)

If there going to fvck around with the characters they might as well go the whole hog and have a female 007, with a Bond boy, or 007 is a lesbian in which case she can have Pussy Galore.

You can rationalise it by saying that 'James Bond' isn't the agent's actual name but a coded identity passed from incumbent to incumbent of whoever is currently in the job as Agent 007. Then there's no limitation.

so much xenophobia here

comparing a fictional character of an undisclosed race (james bond) to real-life figures (mandela/obama) is an absurd analogy

Yeah, that's a perfect comparison. A historical figure vs a fictional character who has already been played by 7 actors in 23 non-chronologous films.

In all honesty it probably might have something to do with what era James Bond belongs to or what era he was portrayed to be in as to wether James Bond was supposed to be white or black or if it doesnt even matter.

I hate to say this but back in the 60's/ 70's I would doubt very much if Great Britain had any black spys back then because , and im cringing when im saying this, but a black upper/middle class person attending all these cocktail parties in the 60's and 70's would of been quite recognizable and would of drawn quite a bit of attention to himself.

He went to Eton during the 30s in the books. I don't think there would have been many native British black men there at the time. A lot of the books are extremely racist as well so I doubt it's what Ian Flemming would have wanted.

:xmaslaugh:  I'm not sure that's what spies do. Presumably spying in a black African country would be easier if you were, well, you know....

But the Bond movies are usually given a contemporary setting, so I don't see why a black British man would be inconceivable.

Nooooo! but thats what James Bond did. Does.

Why can't the role be played by a women, or a transsexual? or an Asian ? would get big box office in the sub continent.. Wasim  Bond has a ring to it....

And would be much more realistic than Daniel Craig chasing after baddies.

And if thats the angle that is held widespread then it shouldnt be an issue at all.

It all depends though like what Webbo said how much we hold fast to the books. The concept of an upper class Black person at Eaton College in the 30's might of been quite remote. I dont know numbers but in 2010 only one balck person was at Oxford university so its all pretty remote possibility
