New 'hidden' speed cameras to be introduced in the UK

New grey cameras are set to be installed on UK motorways

A new breed of harder-to-spot speed camera is poised to be introduced to motorways around the UK.

American company Redflex Travel Systems has secured a £2.1 million Government contract to install the grey cameras at various points along the M1, M25, M3, M60 and M6, the Daily Mail has reported.

The first operational set has already collared some 700 drivers in its first two-month.

And many more are expected to be caught driving above the 70mph limit due to the fact the cameras are much harder to notice than their traditional yellow counterparts.

There are no grey cameras in Leicestershire, however, there are plans to install one at junction 28 of the M1, near Alfreton.

And so it continues. There's stretches of the M1, especially near mine, where it's 50 (whether that's due to roadworks or actual plans of keeping it at that stupid speed) and the traffic just ends up getting congested. Pointless.

They will be accompanied by enforced variable speed limits as well, so everyone can look forward to speed limits being reduced all the time often with no justification whatsoever making things not only slower but also more dangerous for all concerned.

Wont be able to spot that one then!!

I'm sure in 20 years time your car will be automatically speed limited depending on the current speed limit for the road you are on.

Definitely not. Well, it wouldn't be enforced, but manufacturer's might offer it. Catching people speeding is an easy money earner for the government, much like they'll never outlaw smoking as they can tax through the arsehole and people will still pay up.

Whilst speed cameras do a valuable job in terms of road safety, trying to catch people out on the sly is bang out of order. It always amazes me how many people still get caught by the big yellow ones, despite the fact they aren't exactly discrete. The majority just slow down for them then speed up, which sort of defeats the object. The average speed cameras are the most effective, but my god I hate them. If everyone sat at 70, the traffic would just be forever congested and stagnant.

Im assuming in 20 years, cars will be completely self driven, unable to speed etc.

Us motorists are easy targets for councils to make some money thanks to crazy Dave and his overzealous cuts.

Prepare yourself for the inevitable.

The worse ones are those on ring roads and approaching small towns and villages where the speed limits change ever 100 yards or so. Where they can go from 60 to 40 to 30 to 20 in the space of 500 yards

For them to prosecute you for speeding the camera needs to be clearly signposted!

The ones on the M1 through Derby/Nottingham are all grey but you can't miss them unless you're a tw@t.

Another Daily Fail scare mongering special... You can drive up the M1 at 85mph before you will get prosecuted. Unless the temporary speed limt is on.

That's a myth, it might be in the guidelines but legally you can be prosecuted so long as they have evidence you are speeding.

There will be signs warning of the presence of cameras in the areas they will be deployed, is my understanding.

A major change, if it's true, is that the 70 mph limit will actually be enforced on sections of 'smart' motorway.  At present, unless they're indicating a lower speed limit than normal, you can bomb through these as quick as you like (although a lot of people don't seem to realise this)

They cannot prosecute you until you are over 85! Now if the signs flash 60,50,40 etc then that is legally enforceable. Where they buy their cameras from is irrelevant and clear the DM making something out of nothing.

Years of age? I misunderstand for comic purposes only, naturally.

I don't think it's a case that they cannot, more that the current cameras aren't enforcing the 70 mph limit, and as any motorway copper will tell you, they don't generally stop people doing around 80 because they can fill all their day catching people doing 90 plus.

If what I've read is correct and I've interpreted it correctly, the new static cameras will catch people exceeding the 70 limit.  The margin for error on existing camera technology is around 10 per cent, so unless this is better you're going to have to be going over the limit by a fair bit to get caught

10% + 2mph
