cityfanlee23 Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 The last thread was on midfielders, now to move onto our defenders, arguably the most dividing position of our team as a fanbase, again using squawka, I think the results of these stats will provide a better angle to judge us as a DEFENSIVE unit (I won't include any offensive traits) Our defenders have a similar role throughout the team, STOP US CONCEDING and again lots of variables go into the defensive role, and positioning is a huge factor especially from the full backs and also from having attacking set pieces, so the results aren't written in stone, but at least once again we will have an interesting topic for debate. For obvious reasons I haven't put in upson or huth at this point. Can I reiterate as-well that although the stats don't "Add up" in some cases, there are other stats which are deemed separate for statistical reasons, and I have not included all stats, they do add up with all the other stats combined. For example "Passes forward" + " passes back" may not add up-to " total passes" this is because other stats like "Key passes" are separate from these) Total backward passes (better to be safe than sorry, or just plain negative?) Our midfield should be soaking up more of this than they currently are. TOTAL De Laet - 1 Morgan - 5** Wasilewski - 2 Moore - 0 Konchesky - 3 Danny Simpson - 0 conclusion, Our Defence can clearly be improved and hopefully with our potential new look 5 at the back, we may be able to adopt a better defensive line if this tactic is used more, but up-to now, we don't have the best looking stats in the world which we all knew could be improved, the real shocker for me is the amount of stray passes are committed by our Defence, in a vulnerable position this is not on. with so many different ways to look at our defensive stats, there can be a hell of a debate with these "facts", Each player is different and have different styles, therefore will excel in certain stats, however they can provide a valuable insight into arguments that "Wes Morgan is ****" When he actually has the most reliable stats of all of our defenders, this is not accounting things like Positioning or individual errors though. specifically defensive stats show Morgan is the best DEFENDER, but as an all round player, the stats showed Marcin Wasilewski, is our best player in the Defence. I think the key is that if we can improve each defender individually by 10% and as a unit by 10%, our defence will improve by around 80-100%, adopting 5 at the back we improved significantly last match. is this the way forward? P.S. Liam Moores stats aren't too bad for a young lad, should he be given a chance if we adopt the 3 at the back?

cc_star Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 Defence could be improved by a covering defender, a key tactic at top level football would help enormously, as well as having a keeper coming off his line to deal with crosses & set-pieces, for a good chunk of games that didn't always happen.

Yes mate that's how many tackles he makes per 90 minutes, remember it's an average though, so he may make 5 In 1 game, and the number being low isn't that unusual considering how many tackles a team makes per game, but for a central defender the figures are almost sickening really

David Guiza Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 Stats are a useful interpretation tool, but not the be all and end all whatsoever. For example, a few pundits were debating what Kevin Kilbane said about players being too involved with their stats rather than performances; during which somebody stated that prior to Salah signing for Chelsea and Erikksen to Spurs - Salah's stats were a thousand times more superior, something that has had absolutley no baring on their respective careers in English football thus far. Also remember a season or two ago about Leon Britton being up with the Barca players in terms of pass completion, of course he was a tidy footballer for Swansea, but I don't think he was considered as a potential replacement for Xavi. I do find the tackles won per game interesting though, really is a dying art.

Callabinho Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 Proceeding each of those stats is a created chance. So he will intercept a ball, and the fumble it back to the opposition creating a goal.
cityfanlee23 Posted 12 February 2015 Author Posted 12 February 2015 Gareth McAuley Just done a quick check on his stats, the only stat he is superior to Marcin is Pass completion (75% to marcins 69% - Marcin has attempted 395 passes to gareths 370) , gareth also passes the ball backwards more often. Will vastly improve when Huth is in the starting first team Might do a little comparison after 5 games or so, make it a bit more interesting.
Kierzz Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 The tackles made stat is irrelevant. As Guardiola and provided at the highest level, positioning is far more important. You don't need to take the ball, all you need to do is force a mistake or bad pass to turnover possession which is done by positioning. I bet in trying to make those tackles De Laet drifts out of position creating openings in our defence.

If so I'd find that incredible for a central defender. Again it's a point where stats are at a loss. Tackles are a result of bad play, they are a last resort.
