Yeah, that design is definitely a bold statement. If there were a Hollywood sci-fi thriller made in 1999 that featured football, that would be the shirt the USA would wear when they play a team of cyborgs at the 2060 World Cup on Mars.I would also agree that we've been lucky to have some excellent designs in recent years, but this disappoints me. The good and now the bad are all down to our huge deal (and long-running relationship) with Nike. It looks like Nike might start doing lots of experimentation with the USA's look going forward, and I can see them making us soccer's version of the Oregon Ducks. Since I first saw that rumored but very likely new shirt design a few days ago, I've been trying to remember if I've ever worn a shirt that has different-colored sleeves, and I'm pretty sure the answer is no. I'm not a fan of adidas with Mexico and now Nike with the USA just deciding these teams need to have black home shirts (this on top of Nike making the USWNT's home kits one big marketing product for new lines of boots).

Can only assume changing from "red white and blue" to a "red, blue and black" kit is a canny marketing move in case the ISIS caliphate takes over washington before the next world cup? Or some hideous cross-marketing scheme to piggy-back off the success of New Zealand rugby?
