Fox92 Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 I've searched this forum for a Kinks thread and cannot believe I couldn't find one. They are one of my favourite bands. For me, they are one of the greatest bands ever and still underrated. Some people haven't even heard of them. There is no doubt Ray Davies is one of the greatest songwriters ever too. It's just a shame they seemed to be overshadowed but I guess in an era with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Bob Dylan etc it was tough. Anyway, a few favourites...
DennisNedry Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 The Kinks are my second favourite band. I wonder how many people can say that my favourite band stole a riff from my second favourite band
RobHawk Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 Awesome! Didn't get the hype the beatles did but better musically IMO

ousefox Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 Favourite band with the Beatles. If they hadn't have been banned from the US I think they'd be thought of in the same way as the Stones and Beatles - which they deserve. Seeing Ray Davies live was pretty incredible for me and although I grew out of autograph hunting a few years ago, I couldn't stop myself from getting his after the gig. He's such an interesting character if you read up about him and read his books. I'm exactly 50 years to the day younger than him too .
purpleronnie Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 I can't believe they are underated Fox92, the fact some haven't heard of them would be down to ignorance more than anything else. Ray davies is a genius no question about it. Waterloo sunset is just about the best anyone could ever achieve.
davieG Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 Used to sing this to myself waiting at the bus stop for a girlfriend who was always late, very late. Gave up on her eventually as the song says "It's my life and I'll do want I want" so I did.

Don't tell me you've been signing it wrong for all these decades

Don't tell me you've been signing it wrong for all these decades Oops no, just had a senior moment and trying to be clever with my post. I know my hearing is bad but it wasn't then so I didn't need to sign it, might have looked stupid at the bus stop signing to no one
Webbo Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 I read somewhere that All Day and All of the Night was considered the first heavy metal track. I don't know if I'd go that far but you can sort of see where they're coming from.

I love both those songs but hate heavy metal myself.

Ray davies is a genius no question about it. Waterloo sunset is just about the best anyone could ever achieve. I've always felt they are underrated because of the other bands around them at the time, especially the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Again, like many songwriters, Davies' early stuff was about girls and then he progressed to more personal matters. "Sunny afternoon", "Dead end street" and "Waterloo sunset" are all fine examples. He's up there with the very best.

I don't know if I'd go that far but you can sort of see where they're coming from. They were the first tracks to distort the guitar sound which metal bands obv use all the time. Dave Davies shredded his guitar speaker to get the sound. I think they called it the fart box or something like that.
Fox92 Posted 25 April 2015 Author Posted 25 April 2015 'Muswell Hillbillies' is one of my favourite albums, and one of my favourite Kinks songs from that album is 'Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues'. I think it's a great record. Really great live too... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPMYkITzxn0
Free Falling Foxes Posted 7 May 2015 Posted 7 May 2015 They were very much a blues band before Ray Davies discovered his songwriting genius. This is one of my favourites. Little story from about 5 years ago: A mate at work - who played in a local band back in the 60s - was on holiday in Lynton in Devon. He and his wife were out for a meal on their last night there chatting about the old days and the music his group played. After a while a lady on a table nearby came over and asked if they were musicians. She then invited them to join her and her husband at their table. You may have heard of my husband she said: 'His name is Dave and he played with the Kinks!' Several Kinks numbers were in my mates band back in the day so they had a great evening together.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 I also loved Dave Davies, "Death of a Clown", which I want played at my funeral.
DEMANN Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 I like the songs, but I can't stand Ray Davies's voice...He comes across as a nob head as well.
ousefox Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 If anybody is interested even slightly in The Kinks, the Sunny Afternoon musical in the West End is fantastic and well worth a watch I like the songs, but I can't stand Ray Davies's voice...He comes across as a nob head as well. Not sure how anyone can think he comes across like a nob. Seems like a top guy in any interview I've ever seen and he's actually quite shy.
21st Century Fox Posted 4 August 2015 Posted 4 August 2015 Possibly one of the best Christmas songs....
