Vicki Vixen Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 After seeing a couple of our former managers in the media recently - Micky Adams taking Tranmere out of the football league for the first time in their history, and Martin Allen taking Barnet back up to replace them - it struck me just what a shambolic list of managers we've had in the past 20 years or so, with a couple of obvious exceptions in MON and NP. Looking at the current or most recent jobs for our ex-managers, almost every single one is now either unemployed or managing at a lower level of football than they had at Leicester. MON is really the only one to have had a successful career after Leicester. Arguably Sousa is also doing well with Basel playing in the Champions League. But overall the list makes for sorry reading: Little - sacked by Gainsborough Trinity in 2011 McGhee - sacked by Bristol Rovers in 2012 (now assistant manager for Scotland) O'Neill - currently in charge for Ireland Taylor - sacked by Gillingham in 2014 Bassett - last worked for Sheffield United in 2011 in a consultancy role Adams - sacked by Tranmere a couple of weeks ago Levein - currently Director of Football at Hearts Kelly - sacked in January by West Brom from his coaching role when Pulis arrived Worthington - resigned from York in 2014 with them on the fringe of the League 2 relegation spots Allen - currently manager at Barnet Megson - sacked by Sheff Wed in 2012 Holloway - sacked by Millwall in March Sousa - currently manager at Basel Eriksson - currently manager at Shanghai
Fox92 Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Adams didn't exactly lead Tranmere into the Conference. He left on the 19th April and only joined the club in October 2014 anyway.
Richard Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Levein hasn't done too bad for himself. We were hardly a great team when he was here
I blame Wellens Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 This club has so much to thank Little for. Great memories from rather average players.
Fox92 Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 This club has so much to thank Little for. Great memories from rather average players. Simon Grayson was on Fantasy Football club the other week complementing Little and saying he started the success period.
ithuriel Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Little did brilliantly for the club, shame it ended the way it did but in a way you could not blame him, not getting decent funding and having to put that letter in to go to Villa which was always his club. Makes you wonder what he never said himself about the board but seeing that McGhee did a runner a year later and the battles O'Neill had here. When O'Neill was here the amount of back room crap was unbelievable that was in the back of the Mercury, George was forced to step down as chairman by the rest of the board due to being to tight with funds just after our promotion, Pierpoint or whatever his name was went, Heaton went after some stuff popped up about his connections with building the new 40,000 seat stadium that never happened across from where the KingPower is. Always made me wonder if Sky based that craptacular football drama they made on LCFC? Harchester United but more often than not clips of Leicester were used.
Suffolk exile Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 I loved Little too, he did wonders with the players with house. I have such fond memories of that period. But still makes for pretty depressing reading...
LJS Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Little was successful after leaving us. He finished 4th and 5th with Villa and won a League Cup. Nobody, O'Neill included, has matches that since.

As much as I loved O'Neill and hated Pierpoint at the time with hindsight the latter was correct. O'Neill wasn't interested in the long-term future of the club; we were always a stepping stone. It was the board's job to safeguard that and that they failed to do so was in large part responsible for our collapse into administration almost as soon as were were relegated. Martin George is probably the best chairman we've had in my time supporting the club. Very much a live within your means man. The current owners are fantastic but they can afford to be.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 To say Ollie hasn't had a successful career after Leicester is a little harsh, two promotions and one effectively relegation with Millwall and Sousa is doing well for himself. Problem Little had was his move after Villa which effectively prevented him from remaining relevant. Few of them were coming to the end of their careers anyway, the one that was the big let down was Adams considering how highly touted he was and how well he done with us.

Holloway is a manager that can't take pressure and that's what happened here, instead of taking us up like he said he would he took us down. Leicester fans as we know can turn very quickly on a manager and of course Holloway just couldn't handle the size of the club and the pressure with it. Same really with Palace he got them up, but once he got to the Premier League the stress got to him very quickly and eventually he did resign. Blackpool is the type of club where he's good at, being in charge of an unfancied club without any pressure.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Just goes to show how lucky we are to have Nigel.
Sampson Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 This is harsh on thes likes of Little, Basset and Worthington who all had decent careers in management but are just past-it and not relevant anymore but they were all decent managers once upon a time. Little in fact was a brilliant manager for us, considering where we were when he came in he completely reinvigorated the club, probably our 3rd best manager in the last 30 years after O'Neill and Pearson.
dayday Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 I loved the Little era,how he turned us around with let's be honest, average players was unreal. It just shows you when the players are prepared to back the manager 100% the team prospers
gregdj Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 . Arguably Sousa is also doing well with Basel playing in the Champions League. But overall the list makes for sorry reading: Arguably? so unless he actually wins the CL he hasn't been a success there?
Guest Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 Eventually all managers get the sack these days. I think total time in league management would be a better evaluation. Bassett may have been no good here but he's had a very good career in football.
Vicki Vixen Posted 27 April 2015 Author Posted 27 April 2015 Arguably? so unless he actually wins the CL he hasn't been a success there? My point was about where they are today relative to Leicester. I am not convinced that managing Basel is a level above managing Leicester in the Championship. Yes they are in the Champions League but my view is that the Swiss league is probably on a par with the Championship.
howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 I seen Rob Kelly buying a sandwich in Marks and Spencer's at a services last weekend.
cc_star Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 Love Little Where we were when he took over Vs where he took us was great. Great days - One of the few clubs to make a go of the playoffs year after year, when many struggled to replicate their season Little did good business in the transfer market and got the best out of those players Silence of the Rams was the icing on the cake - A team made up of £1m players Vs our team! Thanks Brian!
