Modern football clichés

Having read in the Leicester City Forum that [insert the name of a mid-table team] are 'already on the beach' about six times in three-or-four different threads, I thought that I would make a thread here so that we can list them, get them out of the way and maybe use them a little less in the other threads

Burnley have done extraordinarily well considering their relative finances.

 

Newcastle's fans don't deserve this.

 

Not so much a modern cliche, but the amount of times I've heard a pundit say X team only needs one more win is getting a little ridiculous. Remember Shearer saying we'd need 4 more after West Ham to be safe, and that he couldn't see where they were going to come from. Hull's win against Liverpool supposedly just about saw them over the line too, and when West Brom got to 35 points also; granted it's been a highly unpredictable end to the season at the bottom, but come on!

Margins seems to be used by everyone now.

Sean Dyche claimed the other day that it was "the margins that beat us"

Don Goodman also said last night that "the margins were going against Sheff Utd"

It's refreshing to see a team promoted from the championship really having a go

'Pace scares defenders' / 'Pace hurts teams'

 

'They lack a cutting edge'

 

'You've got to earn the right to play'

 

'It takes at least 18 months to change a team's style of play'

 

'You have to build from the bottom up'

 

Describing teams as 'lowly' / 'on-form' / 'struggling' / 'big-spending' / 'solid' / 'rock bottom'

 

the worst .... they play good ' football' - thought all football teams played football?

Can't only be me that hates it when Sky are covering Newcastle and go "oh they love their football up here". Football is loved everywhere around the Country not just the North East.

Yeah that's what I was getting at - Radio Leicester cliches are of a very different nature to most other sporting media.

I'm partially guilty of this but when people say a team is 'down' in about November must admit after the Hull game I said about as good as down.
