Modern football clichés

Not really a modern cliche, but one that has always pi55ed me off, is when managers/players/pundits/fans etc etc talk about needing to get a result from a match.

Other than the relatively rare occasions when games are abandoned, has there ever been a football match that hasnt produced a feckin result???

He doesn't stay down unless he's really hurt

Park the bus

Any commentator, usually Andy Townsend, who says "Very much so"

A marginal offside decision, which is correctly given, but upon watching the replay, the commentator says "He's a good yard offside". No he isn't, do you know how long a yard is?

Referees Assistant. It's a linesman. Always has been, always will be.

Commentators posing the question if the extra officials behind the goal have ever given a decision.

" He isn't really a Manchester United type of player."

What the **** does that even mean?!? You hear it said about some really good players, like playing for Manchester United takes being some kind of special breed of person.

Pearson can't manage big personalities..

In other words, he wants to offload players who are actually shite.

Mills, Danns and Beckford being but three

"It's a results business"

What business isn't a "results business"?

Another one used by a lot of gumps on here is "player x is overrated/a fraud" - usually when talking about an international player in their early 20's.

'No easy games in International Football' - San Marino, etc...

'The first goal is crucial' - Not really, one example of many is Bristol City conceding first a couple of weeks ago. They won 8-2 in the end.

'England will want to avoid playing (insert marginally hotter city) in (Euros/World Cup/next round)' - Last time I checked both teams play each other on the same pitch.

"<Any team that plays in a complete shithole of a ground despite clear investment> have done really well given the lack of finances."

Burnley, Watford, Bournemouth and QPR (when they first went up) for example.

Also (and this is two in one) "<insert stadium that was built anytime prior to the 90s> always has a cracking atmosphere which makes it a tough place to go to".

Usually Goodison, Anfield, Stamford Bride, Upton Park, Elland Road, The City Ground, Old Trafford... you know the type.

"<insert shithole of a stadium> is a really tough place to go".

lol **** off.

'The Den is a tough place to go'

What?

Goodman's favourite is the overuse of ''desire''

And everything 'really, really is' something.

Even stuff that is just a fact. 'That's a goal. It really, really is'.

Vardy's transfer history is in danger of becoming clichéd. Yes, we get it, I'm sure he's just grateful to be on the pitch considering he was once a NON-LEAGUE player. I bet Stocksbridge Park Steels have never had so much free publicity.

I think I hate this one most of all. Are players really affected by the rain and the City they're in?

I find it hard to believe.

'Leicester's ground is too nice for them to stay up'. Dear me, what a load of bollocks.

I remember someone questioning whether Modric could adapt to the rough and tumble of the Premiership. This is someone who's had lumps kicked out of him in the Bosnian league.

croatian

"the next goal here is important"

....ain't all goals?

"The premier league is more physical."

All of the players are foreign anyway.

I hate this "ooh we don't like to see that over here" bob spouted whenever a foreign player or manager waves the imaginary card to persuade the ref to book someone. No different to the fans chanting "off! off! off!".

And Andy Townsend.

He's almost hit that too well, Clive.

I'm pretty sure he had a season on loan in Bosnia.

nah. dinamo zagreb, couple of loans to some 2nd division croatian clubs before spurs picked him up.

Without wishing to get very petty I think you're confusing your leagues. He played for Zrinjski Mostar who get many of their players and fans from the Croatian community but play in the Bosnian league.
