Seven district and borough councils are considering joining forces with the city and county councils to increase power and money in the region. The government is likely to announce devolution plans in the Queen's Speech. Leicestershire County Council said it was working on a bid. Blaby District Council has said the "terms must be right". Chancellor George Osborne has outlined plans to give cities control over local transport, housing and skills but only if they opt for elected mayors. Leicester already has a directly elected mayor in Sir Peter Soulsby. 'Dependent on the terms'Nick Rushton, leader of the county council, said he needs good relationships with all the other leaders. "At the moment I am working on a bid with my chief executive, Sir Peter is working on a bid with his chief executive and hopefully we will have a letter sent in as soon as possible." Councillor Terry Richardson, who will be made leader of Blaby District Council on Wednesday, said it was a good idea but they had to be careful not to "remove democracy too far from the voters". "It makes perfect sense to me but like everything it will be dependent on the terms," he said. The council leaders will meet next month.

Orkneyfox Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Cue massive redundancies as they combine back office functions like finance and HR.
Rincewind Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 More power to Soulsby. He wants to take over the world
Jon the Hat Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Cue massive redundancies as they combine back office functions like finance and HR. Why shouldn't they? Makes sense to me - councils are not a job creation program. If they can deliver the same services for less they have a duty to do so.
davieG Posted 28 May 2015 Author Posted 28 May 2015 It used to be one operation what goes around comes around
yorkie1999 Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Good idea, lets have a mini Brussels on our doorstep full of unelected officials that don't represent your area.
Jon the Hat Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Good idea, lets have a mini Brussels on our doorstep full of unelected officials that don't represent your area. What?
davieG Posted 28 May 2015 Author Posted 28 May 2015 Good idea, lets have a mini Brussels on our doorstep full of unelected officials that don't represent your area. It depends how you do it, you could still retain the district councils or beef up the parish councils and then have one elected body for the whole of Leicestershire with a Mayor. The big advantage might be that you would do away with the dominant Labour City council and the dominant Leicestershire council hopefully bringing a better political balance and a decent opposition giving voters a better choice.
yorkie1999 Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 What? Whenever you see a statement like "careful not to remove democracy too far from the voters". it means only one thing.
Jon the Hat Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Whenever you see a statement like "careful not to remove democracy too far from the voters". it means only one thing. Existing people protecting their little kingdom regardless of benefit for the voters?
orangecity23 Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Soulsby's keen because he thinks that when they combine, they'll transform into a giant robot, which he and Vaz will pilot, using it to Rocket Punch any filthy peasants that dare to bring a car into his glorious bicycle only city centre Megatropolis. When he finds out the robot is a non starter, and that he can't put a bus lane down the M1, he'll soon give up on the idea.
Rincewind Posted 28 May 2015 Posted 28 May 2015 Leicester renamed Soulsbytropolic Football team S.City
MooseBreath Posted 29 May 2015 Posted 29 May 2015 Makes sense to have a joined up approach to things like housing and transport given Leicestershire is quite a small area.
Dr The Singh Posted 29 May 2015 Posted 29 May 2015 Countywide monorail system would be decent. Best idea in years
orangecity23 Posted 30 May 2015 Posted 30 May 2015 Best idea in years Brockway, Ogdenville, and North Haverbrook have monorails, and by gum it's put them on the map!
Webbo Posted 30 May 2015 Posted 30 May 2015 A monorail actually wouldn't be a bad idea. You've got a 1 track mind.
Smudge Posted 30 May 2015 Posted 30 May 2015 More power to Soulsby. He wants to take over the world Leicester renamed Soulsbytropolic Football team S.City What's your problem with Soulsby?
Guesty Posted 30 May 2015 Posted 30 May 2015 Oh god what is that building. Looks awful. County Hall in Glenfield. Leicestershire County Council's headquarters.
