Used to really really enjoy the haka and look forward to it as a kid. I'm not fussed about it now, but think it's a great bit of tradition. With regards to Dawsons hakarena, the people I've spoken to in New Zealand are rightly laughing it off. Anyone saying they're offended is probably just trying to fill a column inch or making a story out of nothing to get some attention.

Stamping on people, punching people. Gents.

Yet you love Football.

Haka is what they do.

Loved when the England team took them on that year but then the media cried saying it was disrespectful. I think Dawson's "dance" is fun and funny and if the media can't see that go get a job in accountancy.

Thinking of when Cockrill faced off against Norm in '97? Those are the times when I used to really look forward to it.

Why should any team (particularly the runaway world leaders) be allowed to potentially further their psychological advantage before each match and their opponents be forced to watch and not respond, purely because it's 'traditional'?

I've no problem with NZ doing the haka as long as the teams facing them are allowed to respond in any way short of actual violation of the laws of the game.

Well, I have tickets for the Canada vs Romania game on the 6th October - TBH, given how my financial situation has looked for the past few years/decade, I thought it was the only time I'd get to actually go there - (it was £15 for a ticket - how much are they for City matches?  I doubt much of that 15 quid is going to City, but it's the best I could do...)

(As far as football matches are concerned, my gf is thinking about trying to get tickets to the second game vs Arsenal this season.  The only downside to that is that I'll be with her among the Arsenal supporters :P)

Regards atmosphere: don't be fooled in to comparing club and international rugby (or even English / rest of the world club rugby) in terms of atmosphere. Totally different. Get yourself to England vs France at Twickenham, Wales vs anyone in Cardiff or Ireland vs England in Dublin and tell me the atmosphere is shit.

Regards the haka: they do it because the majority of the supporters enjoy it. It's not just the ABs, Samoa, Tonga and Fiji all have an equivalent and anyone is perfectly welcome to respond to the haka as they see fit.

The only time the haka has annoyed me is when Ma'a Nonu (who is of Samoan heritage, by the way, not actually Maori) complained that Wales were disrespecting it by standing their ground and refusing to move after they'd finished, while the crowd shouted Wales, Wales. What a pratt.

The haka is a challenge, a declaration of combat, Wales (entirely at Gatland's instruction) rightly stood their ground and accepted it. You can't go in to another team's back yard and call it disrespectful when they shout down your attempt to intimidate them. I really liked that. I'm biased, of course, but I'm pretty sure I'd have liked that response whoever did it.

I also liked Cockers going and squaring up to his opposite number for England and the French linking arms and walking downwards the ABs together. All good responses to a challenge. Another good one was Munster's new Zealand born players doing their own haka in reply to the ABs in a warm up game at Thomond Park.

The only one that was particularly disrespectful was the Australians (I think) going down the far end to do a warm up while the ABs did it. Kinda funny at first but then the ABs came out roaring and hammered them.

All told, it's just a bit of theatre that adds to the occasion and if anyone thinks it's what wins the games for the ABs they just don't know rugby.

Don't like to see feigning injury in rugby, that's definitely embarrassing.

But "cheating" has always been a part of rugby. Rugby players generally have the attitude that if the ref didn't see it, it's legal. Rugby is a filthy game and I've never believed otherwise. Then again, the whole "game for gentlemen" thing is very much an English stereotype.

You go and watch a game at the old Stradey Park to see Llanelli and it was just like watching lower league football. Same banter, abusive chants, poor ass locals getting wrecked and watching sport. Different vibe really entirely to going to Welford Road and sitting in the posh seats.

For the best bit of rugby cheating, Google The Hand of Back for a great Leicester related example. Unbelievable tekkers.

It's pretty astonishing really that New Zealand can accuse others of a lack of respect whilst also demanding everyone pays attention to them seconds before a hugely important contest while they perform a war dance towards the team of the country who has invited them to play there.

I'm quite looking forward to this.

Haven't a clue how they're going to keep our pitch looking decent though.

After the last match there the crew will have 13 days to make it decent.

all opening ceremonies should be limited to 13 minutes like this one imo, actually wasn't that shit. if that was the olympics it would've been the same ceremony but spread over 13 hours
