Webbo Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 Seems a bit of a populist 're shuffle. The unpopular Gove and Osborne out, popular Johnson in. Maybe there will be an early election.
Guest MattP Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 While I'd prefer the Tories not to be in power at all, May seems to be making some smart decisions. Hammond and Davis always seem two of the more balanced, thoughtful Tories. If she kicks Gove and Hunt into the wilderness today and gives that saucer-eyed non-entity from Loughborough her P45, she'll rate 10/10 for her reshuffle. Done by the looks of it. It's certainly a popular cabinet so far, the biggest reach into the centre of the political ground I've seen. Boris is an interesting selection, I'm glad he's in the fold and politics is far more interesting with him that without him. I still don't rate Amber Rudd and think the appointment of her for Home Secretary could be an absolute disaster, apart from that no complaints so far though.
Guest Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 I think Gove will be the festering Tory in the bank benches. If things start to go badly for the conservatives and particularly in Brexit negotiations I can see him positioning himself for power. Never underestimate the dark side.

Not sure this championing of women in the cabinet is necessarily good with the current crop. Soubry getting something good would be a disaster.

He's hated by his party, his membership, his fellow MP's and the public in general. He has as much chance as power in government as I do after the last few weeks. Rudd, Greening and Truss all horrible. Not sure this championing of women in the cabinet is necessarily good with the current crop. Soubry getting something good would be a disaster. Agree, tokenism at it's worst. Unfortunately the way of the World.

There's speculation that Hunt may get a different job. Makes sense to move him from Health, though. Might reduce the confrontation with the doctors a bit, particularly if a bit of extra flexibility is forthcoming. Otherwise, I'm starting to wonder if Steve Walsh Sr has been appointed as Chief Scout to the cabinet. Some shrewd personnel decisions going on. If Truss is set for a promotion, I'm less impressed with that. In interviews, she doesn't seem very bright - more like one of those people who gets above their natural level by greasing and toeing the party line. So much is going to depend on all the different consequences of Brexit, though - what sort of deal they look for, what sort of deal the EU is prepared to do, how the economy responds, which in turn will determine tax/spending to a large extent....then there's trade deals outside Europe to sort out, Scotland, the Irish border etc. They're all going to be very busy. If the country is in a decent state in 2-3 years time, either they'll have done a phenomenal job or they'll have got very lucky somehow. Could be worse, they could be the Labour Party....
SMX11 Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 In other news, interest rates kept at 0.5% Hopefully Carney will get chopped soon as well.

SMX11 Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 The DECC has been abolished The Guardian will not be pleased....
leicsmac Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 There's a bone thrown to the humans-own-the-Earth-and-we-can-do-as-we-like crowd. Can't help but think it's a mistake, from the point of view of furthering alienating areas of scientific research in the UK and forcing more STEMheads abroad as well as kicking the can down the road for future generations energy-wise.

It is just being swallowed up into another department to make room for the Brexit one.
leicsmac Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 It is just being swallowed up into another department to make room for the Brexit one. Right. It's good to see government has its long term priorities lined up right, isn't it?
leicsmac Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 how could they do this to Gove?! Because the government are vaguely PR savvy and know that he's basically a Sauron/Lord Voldemort hybrid to far too many of the electorate and interest groups? They had to jettison him.

leicsmac Posted 14 July 2016 Posted 14 July 2016 excuse him for being a good tory Nowt wrong with him being a good Tory/Dark Lord, he just wasn't able to play the PR game well enough to not end up being political poison because of it.
