Sionnach gorm Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 Is it just me or has journalism hit bottom. I've been reading various articles on the upcoming game Arsenal vs Leicester and I'm utterly shocked at what I have been reading. "Drinkwater and Kante will be tough in the midfield", "Arsenal needs to keep an eye on Vardy", "Arsenal will most likely win the possession game, but they must watch out for Leicester's counterattack". Is there anything these people have to say that might be enlightened or observant? A school marm could do this. Who will give me back my time wasted reading such hyperbole and platitudes? I'm so angry!
TheMightySystem Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 All they are interested in is getting the most clicks for the least amount of effort so going with generic stories is the most simple thing for them to do sadly. I avoid try to avoid the Do they mean us thread now because I know that every 9/10 news articles will be near enough telling the same story that I have read before which gets a bit boring after the first 5 or so that I read (I know im miserable about our success I apologise). What I do like to see though is in depth tactical opinion on why our season is so successful and why we have the outcomes in each game, and I mean actual detail like who is marking who or how Kasper booting it out for a throw in from a goal kick is an actual tactic, as we apparently have a better chance at winning the second ball from a throw in then we do hitting it long for Vardy to try and head (That gem was on the Blue Moon forum as well). I like to read stuff like that rather then the same old they just boot it up field and Vardy chases it down and smashes it in the net that the majority of mainstream media or those looking for a few clicks like to produce with no effort put into research what so ever. Maybe for pre match stuff, while harder to discuss tactically, they could mention where we/ Arsenal could have improved and learnt from the previous game in the season and maybe highlight key points from the previous five games played by each team (So highlighting Huths effectiveness at set pieces recently or how Simpson gave alot of space down the right side against Man City) just give more detail rather then generic crud that can be said by anyone. (Sorry if its all jumbled and dosn't make sense/ repeats but I cant sleep and cant be bothered to spend 5 minutes improving its presentation)
deep blue Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 It says it all about the state of journalism and the readership in this day and age, on a day when the Independent folds while the Daily Mail thrives.
Thracian Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 It says it all about the state of journalism and the readership in this day and age, on a day when the Independent folds while the Daily Mail thrives. I'm not sure what it says. Perhaps you'll explain.
Wolfox Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 There are some good articles too! Amongst (admittedly) a lot of dross... You just need to seek it out! In fairness its fry difficult to explain what is happening to us at the moment!!!
Fox92 Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 There are still some fine jounralists who write good stuff - Winter for example. Just keep away from shite like the Sun and the Daily Mail.
Webbo Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 Every newspaper is writing 5 articles a day about us. There is nothing new to say. How anyone can be offended by the coverage we're getting, when it's on the whole, very positive is beyond me.
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 The difference is you are reading free content on the Internet that the media need to get as many views as possible to get the most advertising money as possible. If you want genuinely enlightening and enjoyable content most of the time you are going to actually go out and buy a newspaper because that's where the media make any profit.
fuchsntf Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 A sports hack , in the daily rags, no matter what the qualiity of the paper, are asked and payed to give their opinions. They travel and watch more sports ,which gives them a better insite and experience to express and write about those ideas and opinions. Are they any better than joe blogs on the terraces..??? In Todays world with tv and live performances accessable to all Mr avgs around the world, most likely not. That said all fans are bias, to their own.Any criticism is always taken hard, its a tribal thing I suppose. Reporters will still have soft spots for the team they support, but probably more neutral than the fan. Not forgetting they are experts of taking thing out of context to make 'their' point and sell 'their' own stories. Fans are no different, look at any football-forum. I love it...!!! Its all part of the entertainment and banter, so long live the nice/bad sports pages and journalists. Long live opinions...

Spudulike Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 I suppose we can be thankful that at least they are (at the moment) still writing articles about the football and not digging up kiss 'n' tell tales from the past. I'm surprised the red tops haven't found something to destabilise us.
Guest Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 I'm not sure what it says. Perhaps you'll explain. That a click bait site full of non news keeps the revenues up for a laughing stock of a 'newspaper' while a mostly decent paper with considered articles moves into online only circulation.

Or a paper a paper that people want to read as opposed to a pious bore that's largely ignored.
ronnup Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 Depends what media you choose to digest. For you obviously crap.
bovril Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 I think the standard in the broadsheets is pretty good but on TV it's appalling. This is a bit of a bugbear of mine. The level of football analysis is very poor in the UK, especially on terrestrial TV, compared to other countries. If you watch MOTD, a lot of the post-match analysis will just be replaying the goal with Jermaine Jenas saying "he's done great there, crossed the ball in, and Defoe's finished brilliant". Very little actual insight into the game from people who have actually played it professionally.

bovril Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 Every pundit on MOTD is an ex professional. Yeah that's what I meant, there is little insight from these guys, considering they have actually played the game. I just worded the sentence appallingly as usual

It would be good to have a show with the time to do the proper analysis as we lack that in England, but making MOTD that show would take away what most people want from it and probably kill it in the longer term.
WesMorganGod Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 Most of the stuff is rehashed and repetitive, but occasionally there is a very good article.
Webbo Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 I'd like to see a dedicated tactics and analysis programme on the TV. I think Sky used to do 1 but I never saw it.
fuchsntf Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 I'd like to see a dedicated tactics and analysis programme on the TV. I think Sky used to do 1 but I never saw it.Sky still do it, but spread over the week, and not in one single program.Plus before games, they'll have 15-30mins of analysing 2-5 games from previous weekend or night matches. Before concentrating on the relevant match. Mornings they invite guests to analyse and compare, various teams good or bad form and players/teams efforts over a particular period... Then there is the Carragher, Neville and other guests snappits, but with Neville, now in management, its drifted and lost in quality somewhat Agree with what your saying, it would be interesting to get a program targetting or dedicated to discussing and analysing, teams drop or increase in form and tactics. Then each time using/focusing on various individual players. Focusing just on the pure football side, and not on the off-field stories. Lke I said, Sky have certain slots early in the week, but they are easy to miss.
Captain... Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 Look for the Zonal Marking piece, that was very good for a tactical breakdown and the telegraph pre match piece was very good, but there is a lot of generic stuff out there, but everyone is aiming it at their audience so an American site will go into more background that their readers might not know, or a French site will focus on our French born players. As for tv tactical analysis, mnf is probably the best, motd and motd 2 sometimes pick out good things, but the nature of the show means you aren't going to get real in depth analysis of every game. I can't remember if back in the day when the showed extended highlights of 2/3 games and just the goals of others, was there more analysis back then?
Bluetintedspecs Posted 13 February 2016 Posted 13 February 2016 I'd like to see a dedicated tactics and analysis programme on the TV. I think Sky used to do 1 but I never saw it. I don't know about dedicated but overall Sky coverage and technical analysis is pretty excellent imo Webbo.
