Manwell Pablo Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 tbf as proven in the last 5 years, no english club has anything like a team close to challenging the european elite. i doubt we're going to be the ones to break that mould. We'd get fcking hammered in the Champions League if you ask me not least because we'd be a relatively tiny club and no doubt seeded 4th but also because our tactics aren't going to work nearly as well in Europe as they do domestically as we use the pace of the league to our advantage, against a more methodical European side we'd massively struggle. Not that I'd be bothered merely getting that far would be amazing.
TiffToff88 Posted 24 February 2016 Author Posted 24 February 2016 I fell like i need to rephrase what i was asking. I'm not expecting us to win the Champions League, i'm not even expecting us to get through the group stage. I'd be delighted if we just didnt finish the group with 0 points. But i still think some strenghtening is required, and will probably happen. The owners wont want to be completely humiliated in Europe, which is what will happen if we dont bring in a few new faces
Guest kristianity77 Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 It's a difficult one if we finish 3rd or 4th, I'd be loathed to go and wax millions on players just for us to not even get into the group stage and therefore probably not need. at Col's Inler comment especially given the team he referenced as a difficult game lol Do you not go straight into the group stages then if you finish 3rd?

An Away Move Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 I'll only allow myself to start thinking about the Champions League once Chelsea, Arsenal et al have been eliminated from Europe. If Chelsea win the Champion's League and Man Utd win the Europa competition does that mean there'll be only 2 spots available via the league?!*** I couldn't wait so just Googled the answer to my own post. If an English team win the Europa competition and don't finish in the top 4 they go into the Champion's League. Ditto any English team winning the Champion's League who don't make the top 4. So it is currently possible that only the top 2 league positions give access to the Champion's League and league places 3 and 4 would give access to the Europa League, say if Man Utd and Chelsea win those cups.
ScouseFox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 3rd goes straight into the group. we'd go in as bottom seeds though and have a group like madrid, wolfsburg, benfica or something and get battered 6 times in 3 months. but what fun it would be.
TiffToff88 Posted 24 February 2016 Author Posted 24 February 2016 Top 3 go straight into the group stages (unless English sides win the champions league and Europa League but finishe outside of the top 3)
4everfox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 We need at least six players: A reserve goalkeeper, a right back, Aleksander Dragovic, a winger, Ahmed Musa and Kostas Mitroglou or Islam Slimani. Busy summer ahead.

Stay in CL for me, may as well give it a go I am sure we will qualify for the Europa league again one day but I'm pretty sure CL chances are going to be somewhat limited! If Chelsea win the Champion's League and Man Utd win the Europa competition does that mean there'll be only 2 spots available via the league?! Had to explain this about 5 times on here We are fine unless they both win their cups, and we finish 4th. Basically, not going to happen
Bayfox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 when we are through with a game to spare i really, really, really hope we go to the nou camp with a defence of simpson-huth-morgan-schlupp just for a laugh Simpson huth Morgan and fuchs. The same back 4 that has got us top of this league. No?
TiffToff88 Posted 24 February 2016 Author Posted 24 February 2016 Simpson huth Morgan and fuchs. The same back 4 that has got us top of this league. No? And bring Schwartzer and his zimmer frame along too
ScouseFox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 Simpson huth Morgan and fuchs. The same back 4 that has got us top of this league. No? nah id pay possibly all my life savings to go to the nou camp and see jeff schlupp try and defend against messi
An Away Move Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 The team finishing 3rd this season is NOT even guaranteed a Champion's League qualification match. See my post above. Not at least whilst Chelsea and Man Utd are still playing in Europe. Or any other English team that doesn't make top 4 and still has a chance of winning a European competition.

No, read my post above. Then go and read the actual rules!
TiffToff88 Posted 24 February 2016 Author Posted 24 February 2016 Maybe this Leicester Mercury article will help those who can't grasp the simple concept of Champions League qualification... http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Leicester-City-NEWS-City-face-qualify-Champions/story-28754774-detail/story.html
ealingfox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 *Miserable twat klaxon* Surprised this threads been allowed to remain with a third of the season left. 12 games and almost 3 months to go. We will need another 5 wins at least, and with the PLs European spots nowhere near decided this just seems silly. 53 points wasn't enough for 9th last season. A thread planning our FA Cup victory parade posted in the week before our 5th round tie would be locked (People were practically doing this before the Villa tie last year and look what happened there), and so should this. Why people are so keen to tempt fate I have no idea. Guess all our new fans don't know how we do yet.

Thanks for alleviating my fears.... A quick read of the rules was evidently not enough for my thick skull.

AyewJoking Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 Granted we might lose to the likes of Barca, Real, Juventus, Bayern.......... but why would we get humiliated? by that logic the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Man City (likely qualifiers for next seasons CL) would all get humiliated too as we have proven to be better/just as good as those teams this season. when you talk about style of play yep, perhaps we arent good at playing any other way than counter attack but we have lost once this season where the opposition changed their approach to specifically nulify our style.........and it was only 1-0! I think its disrespectful to our usual starting eleven to suggest they'd get humilated in the CL.

TBF if you put Spurs Man City or Arsenal in Pot 4 I'd be pretty surprised it they didn't do very poorly. I didn't realise you'd get pot 1 for winning the league and if we manage that then yeah a decent draw could see us do ok, but in pot 4, good night Vienna, we aren't beating Juve or Real anytime soon.

Guest CityFan 06 Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 I'd say around 5 signings would be ideal this summer. Maybe a few more. If we can keep the current group of players together that would be fantastic, as the team togetherness and belief within the squad is top-notch. Having the current quality and team togetherness we have, added with some new signings in highly rated players, would make a perfect balance heading into the new BPL season and the Champions League.
