TiffToff88 Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 I know we haven't secured a spot in the Champions League yet, but come on, its pretty much gonna happen now. But lets say, hypothetically, we have qualified, and its the summer transfer window. How far would we need to strengthen the squad to be competitive in the biggest club competition in the world? And, even though we could promise Champions League football, would the club really have enough pull to be able to convince any big names to join?

lgfualol Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 Very much so. Go all out for positions we need and increase squad depth more. I'm sure the club will do what is right, just hopefully before deadline day.

Hmm... Lucas Perez is an interesting one, but if we're going to look at La Liga players, i wonder if we would be able to convince Atletico Madrid to sell, or even loan us Borja Baston. 23 Years old, Currently on loan at Eibar. I think he has 13-14 goals this season. His goals have helped Eibar "do a Leicester" and propel an unfancied team to a relatively high position in La Liga.
ALC Fox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 The re-emergence of the Slimani link I encouraging. Sporting would hate us if we took Carillo as well. Mitroglou is an interesting one now he's rebuilt his reputation in a good league. Despite Simpson stepping up this season, right-back is an area we need to strengthen despite the fact that Amartey can play there if needed. I think a centre-half who's a bit more comfortable on the ball would help too. Morgan and Huth aren't getting any younger so despite them being immense this season, it's an area of the squad that needs bolstering.

ScouseFox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 when we are through with a game to spare i really, really, really hope we go to the nou camp with a defence of simpson-huth-morgan-schlupp just for a laugh

As long as they don't have a disastrous end to the season, they should win La Liga, thus can't play the winner of the Prem in the group stages.
americanfox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 Sporting would hate us if we took Carillo as well. He already signed for Benfica.
Guest Col city fan Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 What we would need is a better squad. More quality in depth. As much as I love King, is he a Champions League midfielder? Inler isn't good enough for the Premiership, let alone getting us anywhere in the Champions League. Wasa at centre back? Ulloa? And a few others. I think our first team could give a good account of themselves, but what after that? That's where we'd need to strengthen I think. For instance, if Mahrez gets injured, would you think Albrighton or young Gray would be good enough to play away at Napoli etc.? I'm not dissing these players, just putting it out there.
Great Boos Up Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 The away dressing room plugs will have to be changed form 240V to 220V or there will be some very bad hair on those European boys.
TiffToff88 Posted 24 February 2016 Author Posted 24 February 2016 How many of the current First XI would be good enough to start against the likes of Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus...? i'm actually struggling to pick anyone beyond Kante at the moment
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 It's a difficult one if we finish 3rd or 4th, I'd be loathed to go and wax millions on players just for us to not even get into the group stage and therefore probably not need. at Col's Inler comment especially given the team he referenced as a difficult game lol
fuchsntf Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 Quick, everybody stop being optimistic, fuchsntf doesn't like it! And with pride showing puffed out chest , and a straight back...
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 How many of the current First XI would be good enough to start against the likes of Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus...? i'm actually struggling to pick anyone beyond Kante at the moment We aren't, on paper, going to put a team together to compete with teams like that, no matter what we do, so I'd forget about getting players in of that level of ability. Even the fashionable English clubs with the possible exception of Manchester City aren't even close.

Well, no, we wont be able to beat the big boys, but we should at least strengthen enough to put up a good fight
ScouseFox Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 How many of the current First XI would be good enough to start against the likes of Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus...? i'm actually struggling to pick anyone beyond Kante at the moment tbf as proven in the last 5 years, no english club has anything like a team close to challenging the european elite. i doubt we're going to be the ones to break that mould.
goose2010 Posted 24 February 2016 Posted 24 February 2016 How many of the current First XI would be good enough to start against the likes of Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus...? i'm actually struggling to pick anyone beyond Kante at the moment How many from Man City or Arsenal are good enough to face them? doesn't matter individually you cant beat a team on your own its how they play as a team. If 11 top class players (which we have or we wouldn't be top of the league) play as a team they will give anyone a good game. If you think we are going to go out and spend 50 / 60 mill in the summer you are in for a disappointing summer.
