Manwell Pablo Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 What's funny? Napoli let Inler go because he wasn't good enough anymore. And Napoli away would be a very difficult game? Don't get ya?No they let inler go because they now have better. He's hardly at an age where your ability starts to desert you, he's clearly not up to speed with the premier league and given the performances of those playing in his position he's not going to get a chance to adapt. And rightly so. But anyway the fact you've referenced Napoli as a good CL team when you've previously slated a players who has played about 4 seasons in the CL for them, played well and scored goals, is what I find amusing. To answer your question.
TJB-fox Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 No need to go out and buy has beens on huge wages just to try and get 'European experience'. Try and stick to how we've got here in terms of recruitment (obviously this is not always possible)

MC Prussian Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 What we would need is a better squad. More quality in depth. As much as I love King, is he a Champions League midfielder? Inler isn't good enough for the Premiership, let alone getting us anywhere in the Champions League. Wasa at centre back? Ulloa? And a few others. I think our first team could give a good account of themselves, but what after that? That's where we'd need to strengthen I think. For instance, if Mahrez gets injured, would you think Albrighton or young Gray would be good enough to play away at Napoli etc.? I'm not dissing these players, just putting it out there. Champions League is a different kind of fish, and you know it! I'm rather bored reading your rehashed old news and platitudes, using every single opportunity to slate Inler, the guy with the most CL experience within the squad right now. A top pro and definitely fit and ready for a European tour. He may not be suited to the way we're playing right now, but that doesn't mean he's not fit to wear a PL team shirt at all.

MC Prussian Posted 25 February 2016 Posted 25 February 2016 Adding CL experience over the summer is not a must, but surely an advantage. It depends on what the manager thinks of the squad as it is and what the players can tackle - most of them are basically greenhorns, some might say European virgins. So, where's new blood needed? GK (an experienced backup for Schmeichel) LB (to some extent - who can really step up from the current squad in case Fuchs gets injured?) CB (unless Benalouane comes back; and will Wasilewski stay for one more season?) RB Simpson and/or De Laet? More international experience required I'd also love a proper new No.10 midfielder or a more attacking centre-mid and a winger and a striker (provided Kramaric actually leaves in the summer). Basically, all areas need reinforcements. The tricky part is how to balance experience with youth, because I'd be chuffed to bits if our youngsters like Chilwell, Schlupp or Gray could also make the odd appearance here or there.

I think Leicester's first game in champions league will cure any fans erectile disfunction. I'd even gather to say that there would be a small baby boom 9 months after the first game (win or lose).
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 One point to consider with signings coming in is the squad registration rules - we need 4 club trained players don't we as part of the 25, which probably means the likes of King, Moore and Schulp staying with us to fill those spots? Do Chiwell / Dodoo qualify as well? We may end up needing to balance the in's with our out's.

Where do you think we will get an experienced back up keeper who is happy to sit on the bench unless he's no better than we already have? 2 more midfielders? Who's place do they take? Kante? Drink? Or are they supposed to be happy sitting on the bench as well? And a winger and a striker? So your dropping Vardy and Mahrez? Or you want two more quality players sitting on the bench? Oh and you want places for Gray Jeff and Ben C as well? Either we are playing 16 a side or we are having a bench of 10 players all quality who are happy on the bench?

Rotation.Arsenal don't have enough places in their starting XI to fit in Cazorla, Coquelin, Flamini, El Neni, Wilshere, Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Campbell, Walcott, Sanchez, Giroud, Welbeck, and Özil. All of which I think would have a good amount of appearances if they weren't injured. Don't forget they also have the almost permanently injured/peripheral Arteta and Rosicky who may also get a look-in. With extra games, we would have to utilise a bigger squad and rotate more if only to cope with more injuries. We also need to keep the players sharp when they are fit while remaining as competitive as we can be in all competitions. I don't think it's unreasonable to say that more bodies are needed. The trick is integrating them into the current squad and maintaining the atmosphere and collective personality within the group. Edit: Original post was an annoying double-post.

Yup rotation is the key when playing in europe, therefore a squad big enough to suit that style is required.

I completely agree with this. Inler is a fantastic player, BUT he is not the right type of player for us. In a team playing to suit his style he is often the best player on the pitch. Remember England Vs Switzerland at Wembley? he controlled the game for Switzerland. If he finds the right kind of team, he could easily be Champions League quality, it just hasn't worked out for him here.
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 haven't we got where we are because we've tended to avoid the big names? I trust the scouting team! Of course personnel is important, but I think a main reason for where we are this season is our style of play, which I think would be very effective in the Champions League.

We will need two or three top quality players imo. A right back, a younger, faster CB and a striker. We've achieved what we've achieved in the back of a great squad ethic, hard work and some quality. The last thing we want to do is to turn this all upside down.
Manwell Pablo Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 Exactly...In the past tense. What point are you making? I think I've explained that to you already, but once more. You've said he's not good enough yet he's played in a side you view as a good European side plenty of times and scored goals. So he clearly is, and at 31 I doubt he's lost it totally somehow.

The point is he doesn't anymore and by your own admission they 'now have better'. Time has moved on, Napoli have moved on and we have moved on. He might have played for them before but they have released him for a reason. I've not rated Inler when I've seen him play particularly as he can't play how we play. Whether he stays and suddenly looks good enough to play in our central midfield. .fook knows.

They have better yeah that's not cuz he's got worse they just have better players, hence why they are the first team to actually make a fist at challenging juve for donkeys which is unheard of in serie a in recent years. And they didn't release him we payed good money for him given he's the wrong side of 30. He seems to be completely incapable of playing how we play correct. Hardly a surprise he's played his entire career for sides who play nothing like the way we do. I think we'd be fool hardy to approach games against European clubs in exactly the same way we do perm games though a lot of European teams look after the ball better and are a lot more patient so maybe we'd need to adapt and alter our approach slightly, if we are capable of doing so.

Gerard Posted 26 February 2016 Posted 26 February 2016 Ideally nest season we'd get rid of: Schwarzer - free Hamer - free Moore - 0.5m Benalouane - 3m inler - 2m Dyer - send back Ulloa - 5m And bring in: A reserve GK first choice CB first choice RB And two attacking players who between them can play: 1) No 9 2) No 10 or attacking CM 3) wide left forward Keep Was as 4th choice CB if he feels he can offer another year Possibly sell King, James or Schlupp if we have suitors for them
