Riyad Mahrez in the Championship

His Game has rounded out to be a much more professional player this season. He has wonderful skill but uses it in flashes of genius when opportunities present themselves. While working back to help the defence also.

Last season he only seen the Goal and tried too hard to impress losing possession some times. now he rarely loses possession or gets a free kick in the process.

His dribbling was a class above from day one and he always had that incisive streak.

I remember an awful lot of head scratching when Pearson kept leaving him out of the team when we couldn't score last season. An example of the genius of Ranieri is how he has jigged the team to get the most out of Mahrez without sacrificing any defensive strength. Riyad always looked like he had big potential, but credit must go to Ranieri for providing the right conditions for him to blossom.

I remember just not being able to believe how easy he made it look to just nonchalantly glide past players. Always thought he'd take to the Prem better than Knocky and so he bloody has.

his biggest thing now under ranieri.... he has learnt to work back and do his defensive duties.

Ranieri checks the distance run by all the players and let's them all know when they don't do their bit in matches.

Riyad getting the PFA award will make him realise his hard work this season has paid off, now to take it to the next level with being even more consistent

He was there for about 4 months and he became a regular in a team that was already walking the league. Scored a couple of lovely goals and generally looked pretty good.

To answer the OP... This good....

I remember that goal, he hadn't played many games had he? :S I love how it looks like Walshie turns round to NP and says told you so... All nige can do is nod and agree lol

I remember there being abit of hype about him coming from the club, I remember reading an under 21's report saying they could tell he had something special soon as he came on in the game as he had just signed. Think he scored and assisted plus they said his touches was incredible.

I remember seeing his picture with what looked liked GTF's shirt when he signed lol and seeing his dodgy Ronaldo haircut I thought hopefully he turns out to be as good as him lol what was he doing with those random long blonde bits of hair? lol

As others have said he was competing with Knocky and was settling in, he shown moments of magic even in the championship. I certainly thought he had potential to become a real quality player but never thought he would hit these heights.

i joined FT right after that game to follow his carrer in this forum, i didn't know anything about LCFC before that.

verry good memories this game. i remember when i fisrt heard of mahrez was when algeria national team supervised him during games vs reading and blackpool, he showed massive class in one half during a game against armenia in march 2014 for his fisrt national call, he was selected for the world cup, a good other step when he was in the championship.

After seeing him play for the first time in the Championship on TV here in the states, I think it might have been against Middlesborough. I e mailed a soccer pal in Argentina and said I have just seen the greatest player Leicester have signed since Lineker. You could see even then with his rawness that he had an extra step both with his feet and with his vision. What is amazing is how quickly he seized his opportunity when Ranieri gave him the license to be himself. I would of loved to have been a fly on the wall when Ranieri first saw him in training in Austria, I bet he just went "wow"!! To me what has made Claudio such a sensational manager for us was his ability to put all the pieces together to get the maximum out of this squad.

I think people are going a bit overboard with his first half season, you could instantly tell he was good, certainly good enough to play in the prem but he struggled a bit in some games as he occasionally went missing but that was probably to be expected. It was last season that showed proper glimpses of what he was capable of - inexplicably we played a diamond and dropped him and we were much better when we put him back in the side. This season he's obviously had a much greater final product and looks set to become world class.

Absolutely spot on..

He struggled at times in the Championship to be fair, he'd go missing more often and wouldn't track back, but you could always see that there was incredible potential. At times this season he's been like a man possessed!

love that in that video of the blackpool goal he shapes to cross/shoot with his left then cuts inside his man and leaves him for dead, 2 and a bit years ago in the championship against a now league 2 club. all this time later against champions league billionaire clubs he still does the EXACT same move and they still don't read it.

Did anybody else listen to the moan in last night?

Was an interesting part where they were talking about the backroom staff, and apparently Shakey and Walsh had to convince Ranieri to actually play him because he though he was too lightweight after watching him in training.

He's like Robben but better

Stood out straight away, as Fez said his through balls were top notch and you just knew he had something special. He got 3 goals and 4 assists in about 12 and a half games worth of minutes, he should have had about 10 assists but the finishing was bloody woeful half the time.

You could see he had the quality. Looked miles better than Knockaert.

The biggest thing I noticed too, we used to rave about Knocky but it was obvious that Riyad was much better as a player, less selfish, better dribbler and more end product.

Got quoted by scouse up there as saying he'd play at the top. Smug mode activated here. It was quite obvious that he had a level of ability that you just don't get in that league quite early on. He did make mistakes but he did some things with a football you'd expect from Ronaldinho.
