England Euro Squad 2016

Further proof that we never learn. The evidence will be there WHEN we are shown up.

Wales have Hal Robson Kanu and david cotterill in their team

I bet even Scotland arent even that desperate.

He's proved he isn't overawed by any occasion, he is bang in form and has forced his way into Hodgson's plans, fair play to him. I didn't say he was a proven international, and that he had established himself, but that he has proved he can score goals and win matches.

He's played one warm up friendly against a third rate team at home where apart from one scuffed goal he looked poor by senior international standards, and a few relatively meaningless games in a man Utd season that was petering out. I'd hardly say he's proved that he can never be over-awed. Even the Slovakia game will be by far the biggest game he's ever played in.

The fact is if Rashford didn't play for an elite club he wouldn't be in contention, and that's all anyone should need to know to conclude that it's a corrupt joke of a selection.

its all well and good england taking 5 forwards but its going to be for sod all when england play with 1 up front in maybe a 433

just hope this is hodgsons last tournament. need a fresh approach now, none of this rubbish with playing favourites

I never get this "he only picks his favourites" complaint. Do people stop to think how dumb a statement that is, like he (or anyone) is going to pick players they don't like and think are rubbish?

Of course he picks his favourites, they are the people he picks, therefore they are his favourites. If he picked other players, then they would be his favourites.

You see?

I'm not defending Woy, the man is a first-class oxygen-thief, but the "picking his favourites" thing is not a valid argument.

Of course it's  valid argument.

He came into the Engand set up knowing his first 11 and has never veered too far away. If you're not a player of one of the big clubs then he's generally uninterested.

Vardy has 30 goals + assists this season and he's likely to be played out wide/off the bench. Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge are more likely to be played down the middle than Vardy. It's a complete joke and I hope he's sacked in the summer for someone who isn't going to be a puppet for the FA.

The likes of Wilshere and Henderson have had forgettable seasons yet they were always likely to be in the squad.

The way he's dealt with Wilshere has been nothing other than a complete disgrace and down right insulting to players like Noble and Drinkwater who have worked fcuking hard to gain recognition.

Do you think Drinkwater would have even recieved a call up if we didn't win the League?? Absoutely no chance. He caved into media pressure despite knowing full well he was never going to take him to France. He has his favourites and he'll do whatever he can to fit them into the side.

A Boro fan I know was saying he didn't know what the fuss was about- no one had heard of Drinky til September and everyone is going on like he's an England regular, and Wilshere is the best midfielder we've got.

He couldn't come back on anything when I told him no one had heard of Kante til September either and he's likely to start for France the favourites.

It's so exasperating when you're up against that mentality

He can't have paid much attention to Middlesbrough or the championship in 2013/14 if he'd never heard of Drinkwater.

He only scored against them and got in the team of the year that season.

In the Transfer forum, apparently if you're not a professional scout then your opinion is worthless. Oh, and Steve Walsh is god and if you question any player we make bids for then you should get a grip because Walsh probably watched said player since he was a nipper. :D

To be fair, bud, I do think anyone that's still doubting our recruitment team is a bit soft in the head. The track record speaks for itself.

....and who's this Rashford bloke?

We make very quick, set in stone decisions about players in this country, and players that may develop a bit later and improve in their late 20's have to work doubly hard to displace the chosen ones.

The places left in that England squad that aren't taken up by players who would get in regardless of form or fitness are very small. It was decided long ago Kane and Stones were England players and no amount of poor performance will alter that now. Whilst the likes of say Scott Dann, who consistently outperformed Stones this year won't get a look in.

The following will be in every England squad until they retire unless they are seriously injured. Now I'm not saying they aren't good enough, it's just a fact poor form and slight injuries won't see them dropped

Hart, Butland, Clyne, Rose, Smalling, Cahill, Stones, Dier, Wilshere, Henderson, Alli, Lallana, Sterling, Rooney. Sturridge, Kane, Milner, Barkley.

These players will never be dropped, even if they have a poor season or barely play for their clubs due to poor form or injury. As long as they are half fit in time for the internationals, be it qualifiers or the tournament, they're in.

That's 18 players from a possible 23 that are set in stone. It's not wonder we never win anything when the vast majority of our squad, the core of the team, know full well they don't have to work hard to get a squad place. The fact is the starting 11 will mostly be made up of those 18 (well 17 with Butland injured), so they know they don't even have to fight for a place in the team.

So it's no shock Drinkwater got left out. Despite being excellent, he wasn't picked out at 19/20 as a future star, so he, like Noble, will find it very hard to worm their way in to the England set up on a regular basis. Only when the hand is forced by someone having a truly exceptional season, like Vardy do we see things change a little, but still despite him being almost on a par with Kane goals wise this season, and miles ahead in terms of all round play, there's still doubts over him starting, and some even concerned about his place in the squad as late as a few months ago.

I'd like to say this a Hodgson failing and once he's gone it'll all be good, but it's not, it's been like this for years. It wound me up when we were in League One with no chance of having players in the squad, it's just increased now we have worthy players getting overlooked.

Oh and one last thing in this rant, don't pick injured players! This goes for Wales as well as England, I can't believe they are taking Ledley less than month after he broke his leg. It didn't work with Beckham, it didn't work with Rooney, it didn't work with Owen, it never works! Take fit players! a fully fit Danny Drinkwater is better than a half fit Jordan Henderson (well he's better than a fully fit one). What's the point in handicapping yourself before you've started by selecting players who are likely to get injured without playing and almost certainly won't be able to play 2 games in quick succession. You're limited to 23 player, you can't call on youth like you can at club level, so why take the risk?

Hodgson: Rashford took Drinkwater's England spot

Roy Hodgson admits it was difficult to leave Danny Drinkwater our of Euro 2016 but says he favoured taking more attacking players.

England boss Roy Hodgson says he left Danny Drinkwater out of his Euro 2016 squad in favour of taking Marcus Rashford as part of a more attack-minded set-up.

The Manchester United teenager, who scored on his debut in the 2-1 win over Australia last week, was one of five strikers named in Hodgson's 23-man squad to take to France this month.

Former England captain Alan Shearer was critical of Hodgson's decision to leave out Leicester City midfielder Drinkwater, accusing him of favouring reputation over form by selecting Jack Wilshere and Jordan Henderson despite their injury problems this season.

But Hodgson explained his rationale at a media conference on Wednesday.

"He was a tough one to leave out," Hodgson said of Drinkwater.

"As far as we are concerned if you look back over the two years we have been working together, Danny was very much the last man in, in that respect.

"It simply became a question of do I take the extra attacker or midfielder? That's how Rashford came about. He's had that fantastic end to the season and it will be very interesting to see in a squad of 23 whether he can bring those qualities at a higher level.

"It certainly was never going to be 'if we put Rashford in for this game and he does well, we'll take him'. For us it's always been the balance of the squad rather than X v Y who play in the same position.

"The balance is good, if anything tilted towards an offensive approach. We believe defending is very much a team job and we can't just rely on a back four and a goalkeeper.

"We need great mobility and great running power to defend in that way. With this squad they've got the ability to give us that. Often in a tournament the players that get injured or suffer a lack of form are the guys at the cutting edge, the guys who make the difference or score the goals.

"I'm comfortable that, whatever way we want to play, we'll be covered. Systems win you nothing. Football players win you games."

England face Portugal at Wembley on Thursday in their final warm-up friendly before the Euros, and Hodgson has promised to field a strong side, though Ryan Bertrand is set to be rested after picking up a knock.

"I don't need to try anything out any more but I'm not prepared to say the XI who start tomorrow will start against Russia [in the first group game]," he added.

"I don't want to commit myself to a team against Russia in 10 days' time. It will be a strong team against Portugal, Wayne Rooney will be the captain and will play."

I think Woy is missing the point of everyone complaints.

It's not that Rashford got in ahead of Drinkwater, it that a barley fit Wilshere and even more shockingly a terrible Henderson did.

If he'd took Wilshere, Drinkwater and Rashford I don't think there'd be so much outcry.

when you read that article statement by statement it is absolutely bizarre and undeniable that hodgson has gone absolutely MENTAL.

let's start at the start.

If you look back over the two years we have been working together, Danny was very much the last man in, in that respect.

rashford, of course, played in 8 of the 10 qualifiers and has 20 odd international goals. he's been around for AGES.

"It simply became a question of do I take the extra attacker or midfielder? That's how Rashford came about. He's had that fantastic end to the season and it will be very interesting to see in a squad of 23 whether he can bring those qualities at a higher level.

take an extra attacker but we're playing 1 up front. rashford has had a fantastic end to the season (unlike drinkwater, i guess) and we are now waiting to see what he will add to the squad because he's never been in it before (again, unlike drinkwater i guess).

It certainly was never going to be 'if we put Rashford in for this game and he does well, we'll take him'. For us it's always been the balance of the squad rather than X v Y who play in the same position.

aye, the balance looks great. 3 cbs, 3000 attacking midfielders, 0 wingers. belter. it's about as balanced as gary taylor fletcher's diet.

We believe defending is very much a team job and we can't just rely on a back four and a goalkeeper.

so don't take the best covering midfielder in the prem, let alone english midfielder?!

We need great mobility and great running power to defend in that way.

again, he is basically describing drinkwater here. one person he definitely isn't describing is marcus rashford or jack wilshere...

"Systems win you nothing"? lol

How can an international football manager disregard tactics and style of play and expect to be taken seriously. I'm starting to think that he is seriously starting to suffer from dementia.

I wonder if you could cobble together an England team that would beat Woy's Boys, made entirely of players he didn't select?

I've tried and it's quite hard.

Struggling with a keeper. Butland if he was fit. Darlow? Ruddy? Scott Carson?

Defence:Simpson, Shawcross, Jagielka, Baines

Midfield: Antonio, Noble, Drinkwater, Albrighton

Attack: Carroll, Defoe

Manager: Big Sam

I reckon they'd give England more of a game than Wales will.

Wales will get at least a draw out of the game with England.
