Our net spend currently stands at zero.

Only taking into account transfer fee's not wages but considering we reportedly had 60-80M to spend this summer I'd be massively surprised if we dont make at least 2 more signings.

In my opinion we still need 4 players. 5 if they go for Brady.

Bruno Peres or Aleix Vidal

Keane or Dragovic

Lemina

Luan or Sigurdsson

Brady?

I'd go with that but instead of Brady a striker. The lack of links/media activity is slightly concerning over the last couple of weeks but perhaps we keeping it all on the real low down.

My main point was that Kante's role within playing an effective 4-4-2 was so integral towards the success of it that we could not replicate its success without him unless we sign somebody similar. Yes he provides cover, but its his ability to beat a couple people once he intercepts the ball and play a good through pass or switch play correctly. We have nobody on the team that can consistently drive us forward like he did.

Spot on. It was that ability to burst forward to link up our attacking play AND to get back to defend so quickly that marked Kante out as possibly the best box to box midfielder in the world at present. I'm not sure that people appreciate  (or maybe don't want to) how much we could miss him, especially playing how we do. That's why Chelsea wanted him. The thought of Kante winning the ball, bursting forward and giving it to Willian or Hazard is worrying.

We have to hope our midfield steps up to the plate this season. Imo it was why we won the league last season

1 loss, 2 draws, 10 wins in the last 13 games he played no, or only a small part in.

Not all in 4-4-2 obviously, but 2 wins and 2 draws in that formation. He's a brilliant player, but it's one I think we can survive and still have a decent season.

Question marks about Mendy filling that whole at the minute, his stats are nothing like Kante and doesn't look box to box. Perhaps we intend to get him to sit more and get Drinky pushing forward more. Perhaps the 4-3-3 stuff is right, but not sure about that yet as Oxford was 4-4-2.

Thats real shit, the club has been doing a lot of talking in the months prior about being competitive and bolstering the squad however they indicated that they didin't want to sign any "big time charlies" which for the life of me i really don't understand what that means but we have seen little action.

Oh it means they don't want to sign someone because they have a decent reputation. Our whole success is down to having a group of lads that buy into the same mentality and want to graft.

Sounds like you want us to go and sign a bunch of lads rated 82+ on FIFA.

He looks/sounds like a different kind of player in all honesty. More of a pass master and possession based player judging by his stats. Not a bad thing of course and perhaps Ranieri feels we can adapt into a _slightly_ more possession based game and like you say maybe options of 4-3-3.

Mendy takes Drinkwater role.

Drinkwater takes Kante role.

Drinkwater has all the attributes to be our box-to-box whilst Mendy sits and looks like he can ping a ball.

No doubt we will miss Kante - any team in the world would. We will just have to adapt our style/system.

Sort of my thinking... Drinkwater was often the guy who had to come back to the centre backs, collect the ball and start the moves. Now, I can see Mendy doing that, then providing DD with the ball higher up the pitch, for him to hopefully do a bit more damage. Rather than him having to work his way up the pitch. If we stay 4-4-2 anyway.

The silence is deafening.

Mr Rudkin has it all in hand, he's heading up the scouting now and doing the contracts... expect this seasons signings next summer. ;)

I'm not even worried. People don't yet realise Walsh already left us his parting gift.

Raul Uche and Fariq Jefri Bolkiah are going to fire us to glory.

You heard it here first.

For me it's about quality not quantity. Last year Villa spent a load on lots of players and look what happened. I personally feel we need 2 top class players and the money should not be a problem. I'd have no issue with us spending 30-40m+ on one player I'd they are top class and have the right attitude to fit into our squad. Brady and Keane aren't overly inspiring signings. I have faith in our scouting team (with or without Walsh) but surely the premier league champions should be aiming higher than these 2.

Happy to get the 4 we've got, very unhappy to lose Kante & obviously Walsh

We had to sign those 4 just to stand still, there's no way the existing squad could put more minutes in on the pitch again in the coming season, we were superhuman & played at 100% in almost all games.

And, we've got a minimum of 7 extra games before Christmas alone, AND we're doing more preseason miles than Arsenal, Utd & Man City and despite that we have fewer games than them to get sharp

Then there's AFCON

---------------------------------

The aim before summer should have been - add a few quality 1st team class players & then add several players who will be happy to not play all the time & fill the squad out.

We've added a few quality players, but we've lost Kante, the super-endurance man in the middle, this may mean we won't get away with 442.

I hope there's one or two more to come

For the guy suggesting 'Villa spent loads', they didn't really. Considering they lost their entire spine of Benteke, Delph and Vlaar.

Standing still is as good as going backwards.

The point I was making is they spent a lot on poor/average players, regardless of the money they made on Delph and Benteke. My point was I'd rather us get 1/2 top class players than bring in 4 or 5 that are no better than what we have. Keane you could argue has potential to be very good in the future but I personally don't see how Brady is any better than what we have already.
