Collymore Posted 1 August 2016 Posted 1 August 2016 Sorry for this mods but I need a very quick answer.London people and clued up tube pricing people..... How much should the tube cost from kingscross/Euston to Wembley? I believe Sunday's are off peak but the option on virgin trains are just £12 for all options. Will it be cheaper to buy on the day?
owen Posted 1 August 2016 Posted 1 August 2016 Get yourself an Oyster card (£5 deposit which you can get back if you hand it in) and it should cost no more than a couple of quid each way
urban.spaceman Posted 1 August 2016 Posted 1 August 2016 If you have a contactless card you should be able to use that too - should be about as cheap as Owen says.

Costs £2.80 each way (so £5.60 total) if you purchase an oyster or use a contactless card.
Rich Fox Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Don't bother with an Oyster card just use your debit card contactless payment are same pice as Oyster cards
stripeyfox Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 As others have said, don't bother with Oyster or travel cards, just use your contactless bank card and tap in and out of each station. Edit TFL website has a fare checker page. Looks like £2.80 each way with Contactless payment off peak
Guest Col city fan Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Sorry for my ignorance, I have a contactless CREDIT CARD... Will that work like a debit card for each station?

Think so, provided it is issued on the UK by one of the main banks and has the contactless symbol https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/contactless/what-are-contactless-payment-cards?intcmp=8610

Sol thewall Bamba Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Contactless card is the easiest option by some distance.
HighPeakFox Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Just make sure you begin and end your journey with the SAME CARD...
Collymore Posted 2 August 2016 Author Posted 2 August 2016 Thanks for all of the info. Neither me or my mate have contactless bank cards. Does that mean I have to pay a different price? Surely there's machines that you can just use that will give you tickets for the same price? I'm quite confused.

Just get a return from the machines on the tube, probably only cost a few quid. Not going to be worth buying an oyster for one visit.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Cheaper for me from Peterborough to buy travelcard than use contactless. By about a quid or two

In the example of Kings Cross Underground to Wembley Park the fares are: £ 3.90 peak / £ 2.80 off peak with Oyster or Contactless £ 5.90 to buy a ticket from the machine / booth - no difference for On/Off Peak So significantly more expensive if you don't have contactless. You could get Oyster but I think you have to load at least £ 10 on it in any case. I would imagine the pricing policy from TFl is to deliberately deter "cash" payments which tie up staff and machines - so unfortunatley the likes of you get penalised somewhat.
Guest NGoloMode Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 There is a big chance the gates will be open at Wembley Park. If you don't touch your card on the way out you can be charged maximum price for a day ticket.

Good point. - confirmed by TFL If you don't touch in and out You might be charged a maximum fare of up to £8.90. You could also be issued with a Penalty fare, or be prosecuted. When stations are very busy we may leave the gates open to control crowds and ensure that people can leave the station quickly and safely. If so, you might not be able to touch out but we'll aim to fix this for you when you touch in to start your next journey.
RowlattsFox Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 I'm in London from Saturday until Monday and likely to use the tube quite a bit. Is contactless still the best way to go? Will be easier than having to buy a travelcard each day.

When you "tap in" at the start of your journey on any given day, TFL will basically put a pending transaction on your bank for the daily maximum (£ 8.90). When you "tap out" it will calculate the exact amount and will then debit that amount, Thus, if you don't tap out, you will pay £ 8.90. You can then make as many journeys as you want during the same day but cannot pay more than £8.90. We went with the kids last year and spent four days doing all the sights and in total I think it cost about £20 for all the journeys we made. In previous years I would have been queuing up with the rest of the mugs to pay through the nose for a travel card believing it the be the cheapest way! EDIT : the daily maximum includes most tube/bus journeys but excludes certain other journeys like the river bus and cable car etc.
owen Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Yeah fair shout about contactless card, although if anyone has a 16-25 railcard, you can link that to your oyster and get a third off any off-peak fares, and the daily limit drops down to £5 so if you spend more than £5 it's free. Slightly cheaper
stripeyfox Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 Look at us country bumkins planning our trip to the big smoke!
Babylon Posted 2 August 2016 Posted 2 August 2016 2 hours ago, Collymore said: right, cheers! Contactless is a god send for the tube, no more buggering about with ticket machines and huge lines of tourists.

They're almost certain to be open at peak time before and after the game, so and don't tell anyone, if you get on the tube at a station out past Wembley with no barriers you get free travel. Unless a tfl inspector happens to be on your train but on a Sunday afternoon I doubt that.
