tomn8 Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 So this has been playing my mind ever since the Liverpool game. Without Kante I believe that against the so called bigger sides we would be better off packing the midfield and playing a 4 - 5 - 1 formation. We seem to be over run in all departments especially against Liverpool. And it may give us that extra bit of stabiltty we need Id like to know your thoughts.

He must have thought about this. What reason for the 'sh1t or bust approach' to these last two away fixtures? maybe he feels the only chance we have to finish above lpool and United this season is if we beat them twice. Draws no good as he expects them to outperform us against the rest of the teams. Tricky to make sense of it otherwise

We need to play a 4411 with Okazaki behind one of the forwards. That way Okazaki will drop and do his defensive work as usual.

davieG Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Apart from our 3 corner lapses Man U didn't threaten us anymore than they did last season and you can't judge how successful a 451 might be based on our 2nd half performance because Man U had taken their foot off the accelerator. What's more of a problem is our inability to get quality balls up to the front 2 due in part to teams playing deeper and restricting the space in which to put the ball for Vardy to run onto and defences generally be more aware of how we play.

Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Problem with 451 or 433 we can only play one striker. Cannot play Vardy and Slimani together like this. Vardy cannot play on the wing as we've seen this fail many times certainly with England. So it means one of only Slimani Vardy Okazaki or Ulloa. I cant see CR wanting them to play 1 up top or he would surely have shipped out one striker as all are not going to play. Although I agree we need to play 443/451 now I'm not convinced Ranieri wants to. It'll be a hard job keeping one of at least Vardy and Slimani happy when they're not starting. We also do not have enough midfielders either for this. If we started three then we don't have any centre mid cover on the bench with Mendy and James still crocked. Eventually I would like us to play 352 again but That has similar centre mid problems
Chico1958 Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Buy this in Jan......................... Sorted
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 I think 4-3-3 will first & foremost make us a more solid unit, which is important because it is not like us at all to concede four goals a game, and we've done that three times now. But not only does 4-3-3 make us potentially more solid, it still gives us options going forward as well, and we all know how good we can be going forward with our attacking players. However, with the 4-3-3 formation it does mean having one CF and a LW & RW. It's hard to tell if it would work because it depends on how we would accomdate all our strikers and attacking players. We're used to playing with two out & out strikers. One thing I would say though, is King needs to play in the CAM role which he is proven to do well in, with Amartey/Mendy & Drinkwater behind him. I feel King can be best utilised in an attacking role, he can certainly finish and he can also provide too.
Leicesterfan Cambiasso Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 There is no problem if you play 4-4-2 correctly. It's actually the most defensively solid formation you can get. Hence why Atletico and us kept a very high number of clean sheets at midfield. 4-3-3 is more of an attacking formation, despite having less strikers on the pitch. I don't think we have the players to do 4-3-3 either. In a 4-3-3 you need the wingers to cut inside to prevent the striker getting isolated, then to provide the width you need overlapping full-backs (this is why we've failed in attempting 4-3-3 before, Jamie Vardy gets too isolated). Fuchs can get forward well but Simpson not so much. Failing this you would need to keep the wingers wide but the midfielders get forward. Only Andy King in our squad could be classed as a goal scoring midfielder at this club. So we don't have the full-backs or midfielders to play 4-3-3. In my opinion we should stick to 4-4-2 and get Amartey to work on tracking the runners like Kante did and everything else will be like last season. There is no problem defensively in a 4-4-2. Ancelotti once said his aim at Madrid was to defend in a 4-4-2 but attack in a 4-3-3.
Donut Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 The problem is all the signings we have made look to have been made around playing in a 4-4-2 system. Slimani was bought to play in a pair youd think, weve also signed wide players and are over stocked on them. I would resort to a 4-3-3/4-5-1 with Musa wide left, who i think has the pace but game intelligence to drop in and make an extra midfielder without the ball, but get up to support the forward player in attack. Likewise Mahrez but he has to get his head right and find the form we saw last season. Id then opt for Amartey and Mendy to play as two workmanlike midfielders as a close unit to use the ball wisely and act as the shield, this would require more anticipation and awareness of danger than Amartey is showing currently, as he seems to lose runners everywhere. If this worked, it would free Drinkwater to play as a complete midfielder/regista, the main creative outlet of the team. Id opt for Vardy as the lone striker with Slimani as the option we can use to switch to 4-4-2. Another option would be in some games, could Vardy play as a false 9 striker ?

You can play 433 with Albrighton at RB and Kapustka at LW...Fuchs and Albrighton can cross perfectly and naturally from their natural foot to the box with Slimani at the tip of the arrow and Vardy slightly behin for the rebound...
st albans fox Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Albrighton can't play right back in our standard back four. Has to be a proper full back, drilled in covering behind the back two without thinking about it. He can play wing back as was proved two seasons ago.
RizLCFC Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Everyone seems to be focussing on midfield and how to accommodate our strikers, but the bigger questions should be asked of our defence. To start with, our defensive line is far too high. I get Ranieri trying to plug the gap between defence and midfield, something Kante did brilliantly last season, but these guys are far too slow, once that ball is played in behind any of the defenders, we're all at sea! Add to that the poor concentration we've seen so far, switching off several times per game, failure to pick up and stay with their man at set pieces, standing off and allowing crosses to come into the box (particularly Simpson) and constantly giving possession away (mainly Fuchs), the defence is a major worry for me. It doesn't matter what formation we play, we need to go back to basics defensively as a team and build from there.

Instead of changing system he seems to be sticking with the 442 but Morgan seems to be coming far to high up the pitch and leaving a big hole in the back 4 and a lot of space in behind. Hopefully he can find an answer. That said yesterday it was the switching off at corners that ultimately cost us. We have to get back to working hard and as a team.
Walshy5 Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 3-5-2 away from home against the top sides. Tightens up the middle and we can still play 2 up top.
Tanya Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Another midfielder is a must. I hope Mendy is fit too. Would seriously look at Silva/new young centre back as well
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Maybe after thinking about it a 4231 formation would be a good. Still has the problem that we can only accommodate just one of our strikers but would allow us to have two centre midfielders yet fit in a attacking mid. Something like Drinky Amartey (Mendy soon I hope though) Albrighton Mahrez Gray Vardy/Slimani Again though I don't think this will be done as I still think Claudio wants to play with two strikers hence the Slimani signing
foxes21 Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Away from home: Kasper Simpson Morgan Huth Fuchs Albrighton Drinkwater Mendy Schlupp Vardy Okazaki Okazaki & Schlupp would help us keep it tight and let Claudio still play 4-4-2/4-4-1-1. A fresh Mahrez & Slimani can come on if we need a goal.
foxy boxing Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Weneed to pack the midfield more and play with one striker just behind the other one who can drop into midfield and help out the defence and a midfielder to protect the back four 4 1 4 1 formation
Grewks Posted 25 September 2016 Posted 25 September 2016 Why can't we play Vardy wide sometimes? Rashford has had to adapt, so has Martial..... For me, if Slimani plays, he has to play as the furthest man forward. Otherwise, his signing is pointless.
