Voll Blau Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 Hard not to agree with this... https://sports.vice.com/en_uk/article/has-football-developed-an-unhealthy-obsession-with-grief
Fox92 Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 I still think it's more social media... There seems to be a rise of people on social media (sometimes on here too) suggesting a minute's applause here and there for a range of different people. A decade ago this never used to happen. Ok, we used to have silence for players that have died (and rightly so considering it's the game) but I can't be doing with minute's applause right left and centre for people I don't know which is why I don't join in. I just feel we're at the point where they actually don't mean anything anymore.
Kitchandro Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 Personally I can't stand the minute's applauses in particular because, in principle, you shouldn't be able to notice a minutes applause during a match. The noise of the fans should be non-stop anyway. The fact is, all these things are generally just attention seeking from the people who come up with the idea.
Guest MattP Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 Can't argue with anything they have said. I can't remember which England friendly it was but it had gone too far when they had a minutes applause for the Brazilian nightclub fire 3 weeks before, something else actually on the day which escapes me, but also the anniversary of Bobby Moore which was a couple of weeks in front. It's endemic of wider society, virtue signalling, attention seeking and faux outrage have become norms and naturally it will extend into football grounds, add in Social Media and people can't wait to show everyone else just how upset they are and you had better be as well or you're a disgrace. I detest the minutes applause for a death anyway, it's inappropriate and I almost think it's caught on because it drowns out the idiots, which says a lot about people. We had a minutes applause to show appreciation for the owners, what the **** actually was that about? Reading articles like this give me some hope though that the majority will stand up one day and say enough is enough.

It's like when celebrities post how devastated they are about their friends/former colleagues dying only a few minutes after the news comes out. If you're devastated you don't go straight to twitter to tell everyone. Cry like a normal person FFS. 'Sleep tight bro. Remember all those laffs we had'. Yeh you're really grieving you weirdo.
Guest MattP Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 Quote Macclesfield Town staged a minute's applause for a 20-year-old fan who'd been hospitalised (but not killed) after falling from a town-centre car park. FFS. The image of the Sutton United giraffe head bowed in the minutes silence as well.
AKCJ Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 Everyone is so desperate for internet likes and points. It's a shame. "look at us, look at us". It's like the "clap on the 27th minute because this player has a bad illness and he scored his first goal for us in the 27th minute back in 1967". nah.

Quote Indeed, if you were a Newcastle fan attending the game against Nottingham Forest on 30 December, you would have been impelled to partake in a minute's applause before kick-off (to mark the first anniversary of Pavel Srnicek's death), then again on the 17th minute (in tribute to the fans aboard the MH17 flight in 2014), and once again in the 19th minute (for a teenager stabbed to death on Christmas Eve).
Voll Blau Posted 25 January 2017 Author Posted 25 January 2017 All too often it's people who have nothing to do with the young lives (more often than not) being 'honoured' that start these campaigns too. Remember when someone was trying to get a minute's applause for Kayleigh Haywood at a Leicester match? Turned out her family all support Derby and the accused was a Leicester fan FFS! Plus, are people seriously going to tell me they'd be honouring these meaningless gestures if there was a corner or a goal went in during that minute? Then, if that is the case, all the hopes no doubt built up by the families that they're going to get to see this amazing gesture from thousands of football supporters goes up in smoke. How are they going to feel then? Didn't West Brom fans get all arsey when we didn't join in with one for Jeff Astle? Think it was Vacamion on here (possibly quoting Stewart Lee?) who described it as the "post-Diana liverpudlianisation of our culture". Not far wrong.

The fact people would stop to jump and cheer a goal shows exactly how meaningless it actually is, it's shows it's totally worthless as any sort of tribute or mark of respect. Love the last line, "Liverpudlianisation" - brilliant.
Sol thewall Bamba Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 It's mostly just an ego trip for the people organising it. "30 thousand people clapped becasue I told them to on Twitter". It's a shame becasue there are so many, ones that actually mean something for an actual legend, like the one for Birch get completely devalued. Should be reserved for a minute's silence on Remembrance day and if someone of the club staff dies in my opinion. Voll, "Liverpudlianisation" sums it up perfectly.

Guest MattP Posted 25 January 2017 Posted 25 January 2017 I actually thought the one for Birch was ridiculous, he's a legend of course, but he was stable in hospital, not dead.

I thought the idea of it was utterly ridiculous and I was totally against the idea of it for those reasons, but I thought the execution was really nice. If he really was watching it from his hospital bed then it must have put a big smile on his face. He's a club legend.
