The Race to 38

Recommended Posts

Ok, so after the hot of last season and watching Spurs, Man City and Arsenal fall away behind us. This year we are looking to pull away from the bottom 3 and secure survival.

Everone is starting to panic just a little here, so let's look at the evidence.

Teams is the race for survival:

Watford ( I included Watford due to their shocking form, 1 win in 10)

Leicester City

Boro

Swansea

Palace

Hull

Sunderland.

Realistically everyone else baring a major collapse should be fine. This season with the quality of teams at the foot of the table, I cannot see 3 teams getting to 38 points, and this should be our magic number for survival.

So what does each team need:

Watford 14 points .875 per game

LCFC     17 points 1.06 per game

Boro.     18 points. 1.125 per game

Swansea 20 points 1.25 per game

Palace    22 points 1.375 per game

Hull       22 points.  1.375 per game

Sunderland 23 points 1.43 per game.

There is a lot of work to do for aloy of teams, with Swansea, Palace, Hull and Sunderland needing far better returns from the first half of the season to stay up.

What is clear is the games against each other are going to be crucial games, We play Watford, Hull and Sunderland at home and visit Palace and Swansea.

I think looking at it we should have enough to scrape 17 points and stay up.

Will try and update and look closer at the battle at the bottom as each round of games are completed.

I preferred the "Road to a 4th place finish" thread from last year...

Trust me, you wouldn't enjoy a 'road to a 4th place finish' thread this year.

I'm in two minds. Whilst I do think that we won't need 40 points this season, I wonder where our next win is going to come from. We've got a tough run, and could find ourselves right in the thick of it by March.

Then again, at this stage it will only take a couple of wins to move us into the group of teams above us. If we don't get them though, there's some dangerous teams below us.

Sunderland are dreadful, but the are every year and always find that other gear towards the end of the season

Palace are awful too, but they are one of those teams who can put a run together once they get going. Allardyce has been in this situation plenty of times too.

Swansea are showing signs that they are a different proposition now under Clemence.

Boro are solid- if they start scoring, they will start picking up points.

We need to start winning again soon.

All we need is 6 wins and we are good to go.

Nice work by the way

Sorry lads, we're going down if we don't improve on the dross served up so far. The other clubs below us are showing signs of improvement. As already said:

Swansea - look to have given themselves a chance with Clement, will become a more streetwise and defensive side

Sunderland - They are the masters of the flukey 17th place finish

Palace - Again a team with the potential to start picking up a few wins, they are also good at winning on the road which will help them, and Allardyce is the perfect manager for a relegation fight

Hull - OK, I think they are ****ed

Middlesbrough - Have been around 15-16th all season and are hard to beat

Names you might have expected to feature such as Burnley, Bournemouth, West Brom and Watford have fared much better than expected

Out of those teams I'm only confident we'll finish above Hull and nobody can honestly say we look any better than a relegation side.

Dude we have won 5 games all season in the league. One of which was against a team that thought having a defence was not not required.

We have lost to two of the worst teams since Drab Country last graced the premier league.

I know, and that's why I said "we need" instead of "we will". For me wining 6 games is very possibly. Stoke, bournemouth,Sunderland,Watford (maybe) and hull at home are very good fixtures. Burnley, Swansea and west ham away are games the we should at least get 2 points out of 9 from them. And united, pool and spurs at home. So, looking at the recent history of pool and spurs in  the last part of the season. I think we could get 2-3 points out of those games. And don't forget, Our players were massively out of form in the first half. So, no harm in a little positive thinking. COYF!!!! :scarf::scarf:

Burnley are one of the top home teams this year, bit like us last year - Zero points

Swansea have a new lease of life under the new manager - Zero points

West Ham are shocking at home - 1 or 3 points

United, Spurs and Pool - 1 point max

Stoke - 3 points

Bournmuff - 1 or 3 points

Sunderland - 3 points (or we dont deserve our place in this league)

Hull - Ditto Sunderland

Watford - 1 point

I've done my fair share of negativity, and it got me nowhere. So I said "why not try to stand behind the team like the other fans from other clubs"

I've seen all this speculation before and it's in ribbons within two or three weeks. What matters is how we play and that starts with putting a full team of focused/determined players on the field, a system they understand and each capable of doing the job they've been picked for together with the necessary extras.

Sounds simple enough but there hasn't been much of it on the field this season.

And yet there are positives because we have challengers beneath us who have to get five points back on plus goals in one or two cases and that means extra pressure but only if we perform properly.

And that ought to be helped by the return of people like Mahrez, Amartey and Slimani always assuming the latter is fit and hasn't moved to China.

But we don't need this turn on/turn off attitude that is so damned irritating. We need to be positive and to field enough players capable of scoring the goals we need to win any match because we haven't scored nearly enough so far nor have seemed likely to.

Every loss or draw offers hope to our fellow strugglers but three points for wins helps massively and more especially when you've got a points advantage to start with.

We need to imagine we're top of the league, not bottom, and fighting to stay there like we did last season. And we need to look at the Champions League and FA Cup and realise what a fabulous season we could still have with the right attitude and belief in ourselves for all the pessimists saying real glory couldn't happen again.

We've got 15 games left. 8 home, 7 away.

17 more points to get us to 38.

3 points in 12 away games so far. So being incredibly generous, let's say we get 3 more points in the remaining 7 away matches.

Leaves us needing 14 points out of 8 home games - something like 4 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses - not too dissimilar to our current home form of 5 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses
