Disaster struck last Thursday as when training with my job I twisted in an awkward manner and have hurt my back

been docs and on nuproxen and been off from work the last 3 shifts. No running. Got to hope my back starts to feel better soon, can’t sleep at nights and back is twinging like crazy and causing me lots of pain. Was previously running into form and looking forward to next race.

Next Sunday I should be running the Silverstone half marathon (ironically as a replacement for the rained off Leicester half). If I haven’t turned a corner in the next few days this will become less likely

gutted doesn’t come close

being a wimp I hate back pain also

:fc: it gets better soon

Try acupuncture maybe?  Worth a shot?  I periodically get lower back pain and it seems to help…

Thankfully I managed the Silverstone Half Marathon today

13.32 miles clocked in at. 1.47.17

strava has the half marathon time at 1.45.39 which is a PB by nearly 2 minutes

im very very pleased to say the least

back pain only twinged a few times so all good really

Nice one! I had a similar sort of thing, 6.33 miles clocked for the 10k, 47:54 official time (A PB by over a minute!) but my 'best 10k' on garmin/strava is 47:07 which is a 2minute PB. My old time was a bit soft, but still ecstatic with that!

Were you with the 1:45 HM pacer, by any chance? He seemed to be going faster-than pace for the first 3 miles, at least, so I stuck with his group at first as it pretty much matched my goal exactly. If you saw a scrawny looking guy in shorts and a Birstall RC vest whilst everyone around him was in multiple layers/thermals etc, then that was me lol

I actually went just ahead of the 1.50 pacer with a friend of mine who is usually similar pace, he had a slight injury and finished 1.52 (around 1.50 in reality) where as around 8/9 miles onwards I managed to up the pace slightly and finished reasonably well

bloody pleased as I’ve had a bad back literally up to a few days ago and didnt even think I would race at all until the last couple of days

me and Chris were in our Green Beaumont Running Club vests (if you saw us). I can’t recall seeing any Birstall runners buddy (although there was thousands there in fairness)

You did really well to put out a performance like that given that just a few days ago it was a doubt you'd even make it to the start. Solid effort.

I wasn't necessarily expecting you to, just thought we were similar(ish) paces again so you might've on the off chance. I saw a few runners from Leicestershire clubs, and I think I remember seeing some Beaumont RC vests, but a lot of that race blended into one to be honest! Nice location for a race, but it wasn't the most scenic of courses, it has to be said...

No it was a boring course wasn’t it (re scenes etc) however I really enjoyed the course strangely lol

what races have you lined up in the future bud? I will keep an eye out for Birstall colours etc

I really enjoyed it too! lol Probably won't be rushing back next year though unless I'm eyeing up a new PB - if I have an amazing year I'd like to think I might have a shot at a sub-20 5k by November and I can't think of many better races to attempt it at.

Not a lot for me. Manchester marathon next up in April, and the training plan I've picked out for that one is quite prescriptive with 6 runs a week eventually, so not really much scope for races, especially by the time the league races start again. As its my first time with a proper plan i figure I'll try and follow it to the letter and see how it goes. After that, I'm eyeing up "The Quest for the Golden Carrot" in May, signed up for a Wolf Run in June and may be going to the Solstice24 (Equinox's new race) as well, but probably just the 2x10ks. Probably not too many league races in 2020, looking at more 'big' events instead. You never know, though!

The quest for the golden carrot looks interesting and challenging to be fair. Keep meaning to try the Equinox event, hopefully will try it this year (usually work messes it up)

looking to build up slowly to the Windermere full marathon in May by doing some half marathons perhaps leading up to it (and a half decent training plan also)

we should design a “Foxes Talk” running top and enter an event for charity in the future perhaps ? (Anyone on here that’s a runner could join in) just an idea maybe?

Back in the slow swing of it this week with a 5 and a 6 miler. Just some slow 10 minute a mile plodding to get my ankle and back into the impact again - all off road so a bit boggy - will go out again tomorrow.

Not gonna bother counting the miles this coming week - just gonna run like Gump for time periods! Leave the house and just come back in a couple of hours and forget about distance - music on and switch off and err jog!

It's certainly an interesting one. One of the guys I went to Equinox with (not in a team) suggested it, and I think it's a very similar sort of experience. Technically you run an ultra distance over the course of the event, but like I did at Equinox you never actually run more than a HM in one sitting. I'm just considering it as a 'fun' challenge post-marathon, that I'll try not to take too seriously.

Sounds like a solid idea. I'm up for it if others are :)

I’ve done numerous mountain marathon score events in the past but can no longer run with kit post spinal surgery... What’s this Equinox thing buddy?

24 hour ultramarathon around the grounds of Belvoir Castle in September. 10k each lap, as many laps as you (or your pair/team as a relay) can do in the time limit, totally up to you when you run/stop. Mix of road and light trail, with a few very gnarly hills. They also have a day-10k and a night-10k for those who don't want to do the full event,. Its been going for a few years now and is a very well run event, very popular too. They announced this year that they're putting on a second event (Solstice24) in June - same location, different course.

Really good race village with a whole bunch of food stalls, a bar and your usual running pop-up stores. Most people will camp on site, and the last 1km of the loop and the start/finish line is literally through the campsite.

Interesting- if I’m honest I’m not a fan of laps. Psychologically I find it hard and rather damaging! One of the best things I’ve done in terms of scenery was the Jurassic Coast Challenge. The coastal off-road path from Lyme Regis to Swanage - 3 marathons in three days. Looking back along the coast line seeing how far you’d come was pretty cool tbh.

When did you do the Jurassic coast challenge @Swan Lesta ?

Anyone doing anything re “Red January” at all?

Not for me. Tried streak-running a few times in the past and never been able to make it stick, even with 1-mile-days or similar. Life just gets in the way.

My marathon training plan should have me running 6 days a week anyway come January, so that single rest day each week will become almost sacred for the next 3 months lol

I’ve got to admit that I have been struggling to get 3/4 runs a week when I had been doing 5 not so long ago. Christmas and a horrible run of shifts at work are doing there best to stop me getting out (and a bit of laziness on my behalf)

good luck with your marathon training

got to get to grips with my training plan in the new year also
